Georgetown (MSG), Tue., Jan. 14 , 7:30p, PEACOCK

Rick Pitino joked after the 63-59 win over Georgetown that St. John's is becoming the Golden State Warriors. Finding a way to win is no longer a flash in the pan fluke, this Red Storm team is New York tough and never says die. Shorthanded without their point guard, the Johnnies behind a 19-2 run made Madison Square Garden sound like 1985 again, which just so happens to be the last time they started a season this good (and 2018-2019). Hear from Rick Pitino and some really amazing quotes from Ed Cooley who heaped praise on St. John's...My recap from a gutsy win over Georgetown on Tuesday.

I think that this game clearly showed the value of Smith to the team. Not only does he force a quicker tempo but he is our most reliable long range shooter. While Wilcher finally hit a shot in the closing minutes, he couldn’t put the ball in the ocean and probably needed a break at some point.

And while we are winning these games with tremendous defensive effort, believing we can continue to shoot poorly or have such poor starts and overcome them, against quality teams, is fools gold. How we fair against Yukon and Marquette at home will tell us much.

Vince is long relief in a 10 run game before you bring in the position players. I just don’t see how he can play against good teams.
My opinion is he is raw offensively but has good days and bad days. Definitely can finish around the basket but does have trouble in heavy traffic. Zuby was similar last year and his improvement has been radical and much quicket than anticipated.

He will play against good teams and it is part of his development. With his size and strength can become formidable. In terms of ceiling we have never had 3 big men like this before and certainly not getting schooled by a master like Pitino.

Would not be shocked to see Vince drop 8 or 10 points and 6 rebounds against a top team. With guards that can pass and attack the basket, he can be the beneficiary of easy buckets.

As much as they missed Smith on offense, IMO he was missed most on the glass. Dude is a freak rebounder for his size, they wouldnt have gotten all those long offensive rebounds they got in the first half if he was playing.

at minimum, we need to split with both Yukon and Marquette to prove we belong in the top 25 and be a no-brainer for the tournament. I'd like to see a few more minutes for Prey and Lefty - with some more court time, those two players could be X factors in March. I wish I had that kind of optimism (this year) for Vince.

X factor guy, no way would have the success to date without Scott. He never let his shooting slump get in his head. He not only does a lot of “little things”, but also has knack of making plays at both ends when needed most. Perfect complementary piece imo.

To me Smith’s biggest asset is setting tempo at both ends of court. Return on NIL investment is solid re on ball D, physicality and rebounding. Shooting better of late too.
I keep seeing periodic references to it but does anyone know for sure if Deivon has another year of eligibility under rules as they exist today?

He's like a gadget player in the NFL. He makes some explosive plays for you in a variety of contexts.

You could go with a steady diet of him in the right offense, but in our structure he's a super contributor in very specific ways

FYI -- less about rules and more about the very specific lawsuit regarding guys who had to sit out for part of last year.

I don't know the answer, but I really hope he is.
