Ga. Tech game

Branch, D'Lo penetrating and dishing or drawing fouls was key today.

Fts bailed us out today.

Well, they get credit for hitting the majority of the FTs.

FT's are a result of aggressive play. This team should be living at the line with all the guards and athletes.

When your starting "point guard" neither penetrates nor feeds the post that's not going to happen.

He's just bridging the gap until one or both of the other guys decides they want to step up.

This part of the schedule it's obvious coach is learning how to best utilize different lineup combinations. It's a mess right now but I think things are starting to shake themselves out.
I'm pretty sure coach realized the "big" lineup with Obekpa, Orlando, and Jakarr isn't very productive. Similarly, I think we'll see Phil end up being a JR Smith type - he'll come off the bench but end up having close to starter's minutes. Use him to score off the ball, don't make him run the offense.
Obekpa is going to end up with more minutes than I expected. And he deserves it.

Just heard announcer Ron Thompson state that Penn State will have trouble coming out because of the very hard game they had against the St,, John's Redmen. Wow Redmen name still lives. I love it.

Great to get back from dinner and see that we won. Looking forward to being back for the Fordham guys and seeing our garden section crew

Penn State getting blown out early down 13. Millinghouse eating Frazier alive. Frazier is now out of his game and trying to do too much. Ole Miss shooting 86%

Don't worry about it. For some reason Marillac thinks a PG who gets an assist every 16 minutes isn't the problem. (by comparison Branch is under 10 and Rysheed is under 6). Why is he so awful at that? He doesn't penetrate, he doesn't see the floor, he isn't creative, he just isn't a PG and it hurts the team. If he was just the backup SG he'd be a tremendous asset but why Lavin allows him to control the ball and offense, especially when he's on the floor with Branch or Jordan, is completely beyond me. I'd rather have Dlo start at the 1 and PGIV at the 2 with explicity instructions to never hold the ball for more than 3 seconds. Obviously there are other problems with the team but effective PG play cures a lot of what ails you.

nailed it.

The fact that this team spots the other an entire first half is alarming.

Bottom line is we are a game behind where we should be. Either you pick off a non conference game you shouldn't be winning (Cuse) or you take care of your business and go into the BE at 9-3.

One last point...THIS is the type of win you build off of, not some BS Monmouth or Longwood game. Because these guys can watch the final 25 minutes of this game and KNOW they can do it. Not that GT is the cat's pajamas or anything, but this is still an ACC team that had them down 19-4.

Study the tape, fellas, get on the same page and play a full 40.

GA Tech is about the same level as Penn State......a decent team in a very good conference. If this is a good win, than the loss last night should not be considered that bad of a loss.
I don't care what today was, last night was a horrid loss. Missed foul shots and bad fouls. Don't get much worse.

The one troubling aspect of this game besides the first 13 minutes was the play of Sanchez. 3 turnovers 0-3 from the field 2 of which were 3s and he looked even worse the those numbers indicate. With the depth this team has they can overcome a poor performance by any player on any given night but Sanchez has looked lost all season. I recall one great post move early in the year but ever since he's been living at the 3 pt line.

Sanchez has to concentrate under the basket and limit those 3 point attempts

Hopefully we start our next game with a man to man press, look what it did for us in the second half. It ignited our offense. Nice to see we cut down on jumpers and penetrated the middle leading to foul shots. Way to go with our comeback.
God's Gift looks a little slow, rather see Sanchez replacing Obepka.

We're gonna be alright guys . Yes we have had a lot of slow starts but maybe it's because we are still developing chemistry . If you think about it we have only played 7 meaningful games with the roster we have . We won't be talking about these issues come January. When we beat Syracuse the penn state loss won't matter

Pointer don't start. Today he had 5 of our ten steals. We pick our spots with the press or get Coach Steve to change the lineup. Dom been taking some heat here lately. I would just like to point out we have no perfect players and Dom can be counted on to play hard more then most.

I could not see the game but just logged on now and started reading the game thread comments. They are quite incredible. By Page 9, I assumed we lost by 30.

“Hooper starting over Sanchez. Hilarity will ensue. “
“We look atrocious.”
“This is a bad basketball team simply.”
“Sanchez is awful beyond belief”
“So this is what rock bottom looks like. Next coach?”
“If we don't get better fast then assistants need to start being fired”
“No passion. Just going through the motions. Nobody cares. We need a coach with fire.”
“I'm done. Back to football. This is just pathetic.”
“Horrible coaching, overrated players!”
“If I was on this team I'd transfer.”
“We are getting progressively worse in every aspect of the game”
“We are really outclassed!”

Clearly you didn't witness the start of the game.

I'm sure it's been talked about already (didn't scroll through all messages), but how effective was our press today. Even when the initial press got beat, our length and last line of defense made up for it. Man, this could be exciting stuff. Hopefully....it continues to be used

Please note not one of those comments were made by me! While some correctly want to wait to evaluate our team and coaches until the end of the season, many, as you see, do not even wait until the end of the game!
They should have their rawdogs cut off!

This was a must win and our guys dominated the entire second half the way they are capable of against teams from power conferences picked to finish 11th like Penn State and GaTech.
I enjoy reading the play by play comments.  Why even the loyal Paultzman jumped off the ledge!  I had no doubt we would win since GaTech committed way too many fouls to play as loose as they did in the first half.
Tech also had a limited bench and when we finally pressed they started to force shots and misses that allowed fast breaks.
At the start of the game it appeared like not only did New York City's team fail to show up but New Yorkers failed to show up. SJU fans obviously are obviously afraid to venture to the hood for games.
Coach Lavin is obviously having a difficult time integrating his players and that is sad since a few guys are in their 5th semester.  Good thing the wizard is not a junior college coach!
Primo did not start and that was expected after seeing him look like a JC player in a D1 game for 5 straight games. The minutes he did log were meaningless and he contributed nada.  In his place the wizard started Max Hooper, who played a total of 26 minutes in the five previous games prior to this tourney. I think the 60 minute walk-through practices for the Barclay games gave the wizard more insight into his starting rotation than 2 freakin' months of twice a day work outs.
After reviewing last nights game Lav concluded that he did not need a PG in the game and started Phil again and through 18 minutes he did less than zero as the lead guard, never penetrated and had zero assists. The two real PGs, Branch and Jordan, actually played well, not great but at least there was some semblance of ball movement.
Kudos to the team for a comeback in an empty arena.  These kids need all the support they can get.  Hopefully that starts with the coaches figuring out who plays when and how and with some wins, make some noise again.
