Franklin Pierce Post Game Discussion Thread

Louie once stole a couple of local D2 players from CW Post and maybe Adelphi (think Curtis Aiken and Hugh Barry Milhaven) when he was caught short a few players much to the chagrin of the local college coaches. His recruiting had become Lavin like (that is no recruits).

Neither Darrell Aiken (Curtis Aiken played for Pitt) nor Barry Milhaven came from D2 schools but from Area Jucos ( Aiken from Weschester CC I think and Barry from Nassau CC). The complaints where from D2 coaches who the two had committed to play for only to have St. John's swoop them up in the spring. There was no NLI for D2 at the time.

You are correct in saying Coach Carnesseca was short a few players but incorrect that his recruiting had become "Lavin" like. It didn't help that his starting backcourt of Boo Harvey and Michael Porter were declared academically ineligible with Porter getting booted out of school for not completing class work. One of the incoming Freshman also wound up being a Prop 48, so they wanted to add some Juco depth to there incoming freshman class. That class was lead by McD All-Americans Malik Sealy and Robert Werdann and also included Jason Buchanan, Terence Mullin and Chuck Sproiling (Prop 48). It was also Billy Singleton's first year after sitting out the previous year under Prop 48.

And yes, if you transfer from D2 or D3 to a higher Division, you have to sit out just like you would if it were staying within D1 unless you are granted a waiver. You don't have to sit out if you move down Divisions or within D3.

Loved Jason Buchanan as the point guard.

Funny how people look at things differently; I always thought one of Louie's worst moves was not giving the ball to David Cain but rather sticking with Buchanan; I was never a big fan of his.

I think Branch was more important to the win yesterday then anyone is giving him credit for. He is never in the game when we usually fall behind early because he doesn't start and is usually in the game whenever we make a run. He is not a savior but a very skilled basketball player. I don't want to see Balamou take any of his minutes. Let him take some of Dom's. Dom misses more layups than my son and his six grade friends.

Branch made some lazy mistakes, but his vision is damn near absurd. I don't even know how he found Harrison from for that corner three off the rebound. As you pointed out, Branch being in the game usually coincides with some type of run. The ball movement is noticeably better when he is in the game. I just wish he was more aggressive and rebounded better.

The only absurd thing about Jamal Branch is you vision of him because his court vision sucks along with his telegraphed passes. The FRESHMAN walk on from Cali has betier vision. :(

Unless this post was made in jest, you have no idea what vision is. There isnt anyone on the team who is in the same category as Branch is when it comes to court vision.

It was not made in jest and to use him as the benchmark on a team that for the past three years was known for not sharing the ball, especially last year, is setting a pretty low standard. I sure hope he gets his act together this year but his first four games have been the same old Branch in my humble opinion.

I just got back in the country and watched the replay on ESPN3. Harrison is so skilled it is ridiculous. Some of the box out rebounds were literally perfect. 31 and 17? Our forwards should be embarrassed a 6'3 guard with limited athletic ability and length could grab that many boards. He just wants it so much more than anyone else out there...Jordan wants it second most.

Jordan is not far from being unguardable at the college level. His jump stop is incredible and I love the way he seeks contact and finishes through it. He is the most explosive player I think I've witnessed in an SJU uniform. He is the SF we needed so badly last season. Like I've said a # of times previously, I really like having him posting up down low. He is really physical and he gives us a good inside-out aspect with his passing ability. He just needs to learn to stay under control with his drives and use his left hand better.

I thought Jones played one of his best games, but he'll never be a junkyard dog.

which country ?

My guess is New Jersey.

Rysheed has demonstrated in a little over a year that he knows when and how to get the ball to other players in position to finish better than Branch and it's not even close.

Branch thinks flashy.
Sheed thinks easy finish.

You are wrong; Marillac is correct
Branch makes a huge difference. He's not perfect but is a very dangerous true pg.
.also, love what I saw from jordan but he needs to be able to hit open 3s to keep teams honest.

1) DLO, what can you say
2) Jordan - like the drives, seems more aggressive
3) Jones showed nice a nice game , should be able to give 5 min/half
4) CO needs to stay on the court
5) Pointer , same mistakes over and over
6) matchup zone is a disaster
7) should press more with our smaller lineup

I revealed my ignorance a while back and asked for an explanation of what the matchup zone is. How does it differ from the 2-3, 1-3-1, etc. i got no response. I pose the question again. I want to understand why everyone is so against it.

regular zones people just guard areas ,The match-up zone resembles what we years ago called a "switching man-to-man", where defenders switch freely with one another, so that your defensive big men stay down low and your quick guards are on the perimeter.

we dont switch quick enough and get too many free looks like the 3's we always give up .

While I understand the problem with not guarding the perimeter, isn't that better than having Obekpa end up guarding someone on the perimeter? Maybe the problem is just lack of effort on the players.

Bingo; this is the same team, at least through the first two games. You win with defense and for all the threads talking about how good we look on offense - we play no D. To me, the only real all-around D1 ballplayer we have is Harrison. Jordan could be but not yet. Obekpa, we shall see. Like last year, especially after Europe, I hoped to see a different looking team but like last year, we look like the same old. Please don't be fooled by the 2nd half; just better athletes and heavy legs after three games in three days.

Agree 100%...defense is the key and I am concerned because we either elect not to play tough defense or are incapable...These guys just have never connected the dots and simply don't see that defense is what it will take to be a consistent winner...they believe they play defense but I think their definition of good defense is pulling up your shorts, rubbing the soles of your sneakers when guarding your man and then going for a steal when you are better served by simply beating your man to the next spot...don't believe I ever seen so much flat footed defense

Enjoyed the game and thought......

1) Was encouraged by the improved ball movement. Guys were playing "together" more.
2) Christian Jones is adequate. All said and done, I think we will need 8-12 minutes from him.
3) Surprised Amar did not get in. Figured it was another opportunity to see what he can contribute.
4) Two years ago, I wanted DLO off the team. I was wrong. Now he impresses me on many levels.
5) Dom drives me nuts. I know, I know.....we're so thin that he has to play.
6) No secret, Jordan is extremely talented. I hope he is thinking more team than NBA audition.

Truth be told they played bad first half, but the defense was great 2nd half. Albeit, against d2 school that played 3 games in a row.

Obekpa's got that covered no worries.

Getting a bit tired of Dom chirping at refs, won't help against good competition. Chris,to a lesser extent, should also just play the game. Moaning about goal tends won't endear him to some of the thin skinned refs doing our games.

Look at the bright side.
He didn't punch anyone.
Or did he? Since I didn't bother watching us play a D2 team.

Agree that branch can be too flashy, but dont try tell me that sheed doesnt go for that either. And for the record I am one of his biggest fans.

and fwiw, for "not even close":
2013-14
Branch 4.9 assists per 40
Jordan 4.6 assists per 40

He actually does travel on most of his Euro steps but they're not being called.

Not sure why he's trying so hard to showcase it for scouts.

When you have Pointer missing three layup/dunks a game, I hardly think you can complain about Branch. He had six assists yesterday in 22 minutes.

When your last name is Jordan, and you wear number 23, I think, by rule, you must get away with the travel.
