Franklin Pierce Post Game Discussion Thread

Any idea why Balamou did not play. Did not even get in the game during the last minute when all the walk ons got on the court.

Played a few minutes in 1st half

I'm hoping we get him going. The single biggest issue we are going to face rotation wise is how to keep Obekpa on the court in the last 5 minutes (near term) and fresh in March (long term). I'm a big proponent of playing your best guys big minutes, and think Harrison/Jordan are good for 35+ every night, but being the lone big playing those kind of minutes is a recipe for wearing down.

The solution to both the near term and long term issues is finding lineup(s) that can keep CO at about 30-32 MPG, and I think Felix has to be part of that equation. Jones is too, but he seems to be in the mix already, and I don't think Jones+ Dom+the three guards - while hopefully a viable option - is always going to be the answer. Felix has that next level bounce that allows him to play bigger than he is at the rim, and there is a huge defensive/rebounding difference between having him vs. Branch/Greene in the game. Huge.

I'd be interested to see what Jordan and Harrison (our two best rebounding and defensive guards by a mile) + Felix + Dom + Jones looked like in 3-4 minute spurts. Our two best scorers and probably our most athletic non-Obekpa lineup.

We are so thin, lineup inefficiencies are going to be felt. The meat and potatoes is that, unless there is foul trouble, there should never be a time where at least two of Jordan/Harrison/Obekpa aren't on the floor. The staff has to build out from that to fine tune the details that will create the optimal 40-minute rotation.
It is apparent that margin of error for this team is razor thin.

It's so thin that it's thinner than the garlic slices Paulie would cut with the razor blade when preparing dinner for Henry and the other guys in the can.

Jones looked serviceable,,which is extremely important. If I were Lavin I would give him as much minutes as I could agaist the patsies. Also would have liked to see what Felix and Amar could do . DLO was unbelievable. CO showed how important he is to the team but also demonstrated he is foul prone and we better be able to adjust.

Getting a bit tired of Dom chirping at refs, won't help against good competition. Chris,to a lesser extent, should also just play the game. Moaning about goal tends won't endear him to some of the thin skinned refs doing our games.

When you are the best defensive player in college basketball, you are allowed to needle the refs. It's kind of like Ted Williams arguing balls and strikes. If he said it was a ball, it must be so.

They must watch a lot of NBA games. Half the league thinks that they have never committed a foul, and that they are fouled on every play.

Yup. The way I see it, there are three tranches in terms of minutes and expected production:

Harrison
Obekpa
Jordan

Pointer
Branch
Greene

Jones
Balamou
*ADR

Need proportionate contribution from all to get where we want to go.

We're really sniffing the sauce around here, aren't we?

I think Branch was more important to the win yesterday then anyone is giving him credit for. He is never in the game when we usually fall behind early because he doesn't start and is usually in the game whenever we make a run. He is not a savior but a very skilled basketball player. I don't want to see Balamou take any of his minutes. Let him take some of Dom's. Dom misses more layups than my son and his six grade friends.

While I agree, Branch has too much experience to make the mistakes he has been making.

From traveling, to carrying, to botching 2-on-1 fastbreaks, he needs to get it together and quickly.

We've looked good with Branch at PG and Rysheed playing off the ball. It's just too many boneheaded mishaps from a Senior.

I just got back in the country and watched the replay on ESPN3. Harrison is so skilled it is ridiculous. Some of the box out rebounds were literally perfect. 31 and 17? Our forwards should be embarrassed a 6'3 guard with limited athletic ability and length could grab that many boards. He just wants it so much more than anyone else out there...Jordan wants it second most.

Jordan is not far from being unguardable at the college level. His jump stop is incredible and I love the way he seeks contact and finishes through it. He is the most explosive player I think I've witnessed in an SJU uniform. He is the SF we needed so badly last season. Like I've said a # of times previously, I really like having him posting up down low. He is really physical and he gives us a good inside-out aspect with his passing ability. He just needs to learn to stay under control with his drives and use his left hand better.

I thought Jones played one of his best games, but he'll never be a junkyard dog.

Branch made some lazy mistakes, but his vision is damn near absurd. I don't even know how he found Harrison from for that corner three off the rebound. As you pointed out, Branch being in the game usually coincides with some type of run. The ball movement is noticeably better when he is in the game. I just wish he was more aggressive and rebounded better.

Boy, you must be in the running to be Jordan's agent. Jordan unguardable?? We have played NJIT and Franklin Pierce; at least wait until we play a real team before trotting out the hyperbole. To date, he has done nothing of note to be mentioned as an all-time anything in an SJU uniform. Not saying he doesn't have potential and he can certainly make plays but consistency makes a player, not highlight reels.

Louie once stole a couple of local D2 players from CW Post and maybe Adelphi (think Curtis Aiken and Hugh Barry Milhaven) when he was caught short a few players much to the chagrin of the local college coaches. His recruiting had become Lavin like (that is no recruits).

Neither Darrell Aiken (Curtis Aiken played for Pitt) nor Barry Milhaven came from D2 schools but from Area Jucos ( Aiken from Weschester CC I think and Barry from Nassau CC). The complaints where from D2 coaches who the two had committed to play for only to have St. John's swoop them up in the spring. There was no NLI for D2 at the time.

You are correct in saying Coach Carnesseca was short a few players but incorrect that his recruiting had become "Lavin" like. It didn't help that his starting backcourt of Boo Harvey and Michael Porter were declared academically ineligible with Porter getting booted out of school for not completing class work. One of the incoming Freshman also wound up being a Prop 48, so they wanted to add some Juco depth to there incoming freshman class. That class was lead by McD All-Americans Malik Sealy and Robert Werdann and also included Jason Buchanan, Terence Mullin and Chuck Sproiling (Prop 48). It was also Billy Singleton's first year after sitting out the previous year under Prop 48.

And yes, if you transfer from D2 or D3 to a higher Division, you have to sit out just like you would if it were staying within D1 unless you are granted a waiver. You don't have to sit out if you move down Divisions or within D3.

Loved Jason Buchanan as the point guard.

The only absurd thing about Jamal Branch is you vision of him because his court vision sucks along with his telegraphed passes. The FRESHMAN walk on from Cali has better vision. :(

I have to tip my cap to you. It's odd, he doesn't really come across as a super athlete (certainly well above average), but the kid just explodes off the ground and I love the way he rips down boards and that power dribble he takes in the lane.

We have so many kids like Jones and even my boy Branch who are just relaxed...this kid is a beast.

The only thing that will stop Jordan this season will be Jordan. He is too often out of control. He also still has no left hand, but you don't need one in college if you have a good hesitation and a couple of spin moves--which Jordan has. Different story at the NBA level and I feel I've been pretty vocal about Jordan's chances after this season.

The things he does do well he does as well as anyone out there.
