Franklin Pierce Post Game Discussion Thread

I think the ball movement is great. Both games. 19 assists for the team tonight. They are sharing the ball playing unselfishly. One thing we do have going for us is chemistry. 3 players have played over 100 games with each other.
I think this could be a fun year as long as CO can stay out of foul trouble.
The first half was tough to watch, however that guy from FP was unconscious in the first half. Made adjustments and dominated the second half like we should've.
Looking forward to Wednesdays game. I think we come out strong right from the opening tip and win that game by 22.

Off topic but curious about something if someone could please give me the answer. Are DII athletes able to transfer to a DI school? If so do they have to sit out a season like a transfer from one DI school to another has to. I just can't think of any players that I've heard of go from DII to DI. Just usually hear of JUCO players.

I know what you are thinking! That kid from FP....8-of-14 on 3-point attempts. We haven't had a shooter that smooth since Max Hooper. Well, yes, a D2 player can transfer to D1 St. JOHN'S but forward Ryen Vilmont is not transferring. LOL.

1) DLO, what can you say
2) Jordan - like the drives, seems more aggressive
3) Jones showed nice a nice game , should be able to give 5 min/half
4) CO needs to stay on the court
5) Pointer , same mistakes over and over
6) matchup zone is a disaster
7) should press more with our smaller lineup

I revealed my ignorance a while back and asked for an explanation of what the matchup zone is. How does it differ from the 2-3, 1-3-1, etc. i got no response. I pose the question again. I want to understand why everyone is so against it.

They used to be able to transfer without sitting, but someone on this board several years ago (Moose?) told me that may no longer be the case.

I know Nebraska once pulled their starting PG from D2, but that might be going back 15, 20 years. All a blur at this point. It's strange to me that a D2 guy who excels for three years wouldn't take a shot at high D1 as a senior. Maybe too comfortable at their current school?

Just off the top of my head, Garth Joseph and Damon Reed, big men from St.Rose, probably could have made the jump.

Any idea why Balamou did not play. Did not even get in the game during the last minute when all the walk ons got on the court.

Played a few minutes in 1st half

No idea but my guess if you can transfer up with no penalty.

You guys are gonna like this

@NYPost_Brazille: Sir'Dominic Pointer: "I'm one of the best defensive players in the country, so I gotta stop that. I can't let him go off." #sjubb

That's why Jordan was assigned to cover FP's big scorer...

For a team that has been forced to play a a small lineup, you think we'd display quickness on defense..on the contrary, we always appear slow afoot and yield a lot of blow bys

Last year I left the exhibition game vs Div Two team from San Fran wishing we could trade Greene and Branch for their two under classmen guards who completely outplayed our guards.
Same story tonight. It is so disappointing that Felix hasn't shown enough to take minutes from them or that the staff brought in someone who could.

Louie once stole a couple of local D2 players from CW Post and maybe Adelphi (think Curtis Aiken and Hugh Barry Milhaven) when he was caught short a few players much to the chagrin of the local college coaches. His recruiting had become Lavin like (that is no recruits).

regular zones people just guard areas ,The match-up zone resembles what we years ago called a "switching man-to-man", where defenders switch freely with one another, so that your defensive big men stay down low and your quick guards are on the perimeter.

we dont switch quick enough and get too many free looks like the 3's we always give up .

While I understand the problem with not guarding the perimeter, isn't that better than having Obekpa end up guarding someone on the perimeter? Maybe the problem is just lack of effort on the players.

Neither Darrell Aiken (Curtis Aiken played for Pitt) nor Barry Milhaven came from D2 schools but from Area Jucos ( Aiken from Weschester CC I think and Barry from Nassau CC). The complaints where from D2 coaches who the two had committed to play for only to have St. John's swoop them up in the spring. There was no NLI for D2 at the time.

You are correct in saying Coach Carnesseca was short a few players but incorrect that his recruiting had become "Lavin" like. It didn't help that his starting backcourt of Boo Harvey and Michael Porter were declared academically ineligible with Porter getting booted out of school for not completing class work. One of the incoming Freshman also wound up being a Prop 48, so they wanted to add some Juco depth to there incoming freshman class. That class was lead by McD All-Americans Malik Sealy and Robert Werdann and also included Jason Buchanan, Terence Mullin and Chuck Sproiling (Prop 48). It was also Billy Singleton's first year after sitting out the previous year under Prop 48.

And yes, if you transfer from D2 or D3 to a higher Division, you have to sit out just like you would if it were staying within D1 unless you are granted a waiver. You don't have to sit out if you move down Divisions or within D3.

Dlo is some player.

Warrior, who is in great shape, committed to rebounding & is easy to root for. Great game!

One of my favorite players since I became a Johnnie fan

Same here. He's clearly on a mission this year which couldn't be a better thing for this team. In some ways I'm almost more impressed with 17 rebounds against lesser competition. It's easier to put the actual stats up, but it demonstrates his mindset that he's totally engaged on every play, ever game no matter who the comp, which is more important than the 17 rebounds big picture.

I'm hoping we get him going. The single biggest issue we are going to face rotation wise is how to keep Obekpa on the court in the last 5 minutes (near term) and fresh in March (long term). I'm a big proponent of playing your best guys big minutes, and think Harrison/Jordan are good for 35+ every night, but being the lone big playing those kind of minutes is a recipe for wearing down.

The solution to both the near term and long term issues is finding lineup(s) that can keep CO at about 30-32 MPG, and I think Felix has to be part of that equation. Jones is too, but he seems to be in the mix already, and I don't think Jones+ Dom+the three guards - while hopefully a viable option - is always going to be the answer. Felix has that next level bounce that allows him to play bigger than he is at the rim, and there is a huge defensive/rebounding difference between having him vs. Branch/Greene in the game. Huge.

I'd be interested to see what Jordan and Harrison (our two best rebounding and defensive guards by a mile) + Felix + Dom + Jones looked like in 3-4 minute spurts. Our two best scorers and probably our most athletic non-Obekpa lineup.

We are so thin, lineup inefficiencies are going to be felt. The meat and potatoes is that, unless there is foul trouble, there should never be a time where at least two of Jordan/Harrison/Obekpa aren't on the floor. The staff has to build out from that to fine tune the details that will create the optimal 40-minute rotation.

For the record, DIII programs can actually be better than DII. DIII schools do not offer athletic scholarships but often can be creative with a package of grants, financial aid, and academic scholarships that do not limit how many players you can recruit in a season, etc.

I think of the pre-conference season a lot like the exhibition season in pro sports. Save for the 4-5 competitive non conference games, the results or box scores don't matter a heck of a lot. You may be working on some plays, playing someone out of position, subbing in guys who are given a shot to prove what they can do, etc. Plus, any individual beating up on inferior talent doesn't convince me that it will carry over for that guy when you start playing with the big boys.

Bingo; this is the same team, at least through the first two games. You win with defense and for all the threads talking about how good we look on offense - we play no D. To me, the only real all-around D1 ballplayer we have is Harrison. Jordan could be but not yet. Obekpa, we shall see. Like last year, especially after Europe, I hoped to see a different looking team but like last year, we look like the same old. Please don't be fooled by the 2nd half; just better athletes and heavy legs after three games in three days.
