Mike, you should have talked ESPN into topping FOX's deal, while giving the Big East as much airtime. Otherwise, it is what it is. FS1 is in its first year. I suspect that they will become better known in coming years.

Of course they will get better, but that's not the point. Right now, present day, not playing games on ESPN is hurting St. Johns' buzz. There hasn't been a valid point stated to show differently.

I work in the industry as well and totally understand ratings. However it is year 1. Again how many games were on ESPN or ESPN2 last year? Most of the games were on ESPNU or ESPN3. How many Big Mondays have we been on in the last 3 years lets say?

Lastly winning creates buzz. We sucked the 1st half of the BE season and we are on a run right now. If the run continues great. And if the run continues ESPN will talk about us just like they fawn over McDermott and Nova's play this year.

We had 11 games on ESPN, ESPN2 or ESPNU last year.

You work for ABC, which is affiliated with ESPN. It sounds very disingenuous and I would say presents a conflict of interest for you to promote ESPN as much as you do. It does make me question your motives.

Plus, ABC is completely Disneyfied! 'Nuff said!

Tony...you're really struggling in this thread. From you thinking that "most americans are lazy" is such a generalization to you assuming im promoting ESPN like they're not the obvious leader in sports programming. This isn't even arguing mcdonalds vs. burger king...this is more like McDonalds (espn) vs. quizno's (FS1). I don't have to promote ESPN here....you can just google the ratings to finally comprehend the point.

Were all st. john's grads...id like to think you have more common sense than you've shown.

And, finally, what is your point?

You quoted my point...

we played 17 games on the espn networks (ESPN, ESPN2, and ESPNU) last season....15 if you take out the NIT games. We play zero on the espn networks this season. a network that is viewed far more than games on Fox Sports 1.

So if people quesiton sju's buzz, or lackthereof, playing 15 less games on ESPN surely doesn't help.

Oh Michael. Reverting to the old trick of attacking someone personally when you don't have any logic to back up your claims. I'd like to think that since we are all St. John's grads, you'd have a little more respect for others opinions than you've shown.

I don't need to google ratings to know that ESPN has higher ratings than FS1. That's just common sense because of how long ESPN has been around vs FS1. But higher ratings does not translate into hurting our program because we're not on ESPN. And by the way, as I'm sure you must realize since you are in the business, higher ratings does not always translate into higher quality.

You have yet to prove how not being on ESPN has hurt us. Have we lost recruits because we are not on ESPN? Have we lost revenue of any amount because we are not on ESPN?

And one thing you fail to realize, or if you do realize it you ignore it, is that we play in the media capital of the world. As long as we keep winning, we will get all the media attention we need, including from ESPN.

I look forward to your data, other than simply your opinion, showing how not being on ESPN has hurt us. And maybe you can help me in my "struggling with this thread." ;)

We all know that SJU moved went from being a small fish in an enormous pond to a decent size fish in a tiny pond. If Mike signs with FS1 it can only help both SJU and the Big East.

More viewership=more buzz and stating less people are watching our games on FS1 is pretty logical.

I never once said that lack of ESPN will hurt us in recruiting or revenue, although it surely won't help on the recruiting end. It's logical to assume that some recruits relish the chance to play a good amount of games on the ESPN networks. I don't think it's a deciding factor, but again lack of ESPN games will not help us.

the original point presented by another poster questioned the "buzz" around the program and considering how poor the ratings on FS1 are we're not getting any favors from our tv contract right now.

I don't need data...it's common sense. Less/zero games on the #1 sports network is not a good thing.

Let me “weigh” in here, no FrancesaCon pun intended. A dispassionate observer.

I agree with Mike B, that ESPN is the go-to station for college BB. I immediately go there first at night to see what is on in terms of my favorite sport. On my cable network is has been on channel 36 for decades, so it is automatic.

I had a hard time finding Fox Sports 1 in the beginning, and after a bunch of attempts I finally got it nailed down, but I swear that my provider moved it around in the beginning at least. It was a real pain in the arse. So Mike B’s points are well taken. I guess I am lazy or stupid but it wasn’t a lot of fun searching for it. Went into the 700’s, then it was in the lower numbers.

That MIke B works for ABC is irrelevant to me.

The point is ESPN is better, but we’re not there, so let’s move on. Hopefully this new affiliation works out well down the road. If not, so what, what can you do about it. Contracts run out and get bid out and then we’ll maybe be back on a different station, who cares.

The casual college bb fan, is more likely to stumble upon a SJU game when we were on ESPN, not as much if it was ESPN 3 or ESPNU. I for one found ESPN and ESPN2 easy to remember, but not so much the other ESPNs. So in the end it is almost a push, seeing our ration on ESPN last year.

Guys, let’s not get personal about any of this, it’s not religion and its not politics, relax.

I try to watch Fox Sports 1 as much as possible out of loyalty to the Big East. Outside of Big East basketball, I have not found much that interests me. The news show at 11 is ok and is repeated all night, kind of like SportsCenter. They picked up some Horse Racing which I like and will be adding the World Cup in 2018. I thought the advantage to signing with Fox Sports was the 3 million per year for ten years that the school gets. The school needs to reinvest that into the program to help with recruiting that might be hurt by not being on ESPN.

I don't care what he says (obviously within reason lol) as long as he keeps talking about St. Johns Basketball

Roberts and Benigno were talking about last night's game with Minko. Joe B said it was really good to see St. John's good again. Then they kidded Minko about how he will have mixed feelings broadcasting tomorrow night's game, with him being a Butler grad and all.

Francesca opened the show talking about how lousy the NBA allstar game was. Quickly pivoted to St. John's and arrogantly mentioned they've caught his attention because they're playing well. Then declared they will make the tournament.

He said they play good defense and that they have talented players. And yes, the Pope decreed, SJU is (already) IN the Big Dance.

If we don't make it he'll explain why his pick was right anyway, and tell some caller who disagrees, "you don't know anything".

Later in his show, Mike F. declared, that St. John’s would put fear in anyone we played....no team in the Tourny would want to play St John’s...later he added that the ONLY team in college sports that can “own” NYC is St John’s....and more later when he said, this is a sweet 16 team, that's how good they are.

Unfortunately he prefaced all this by saying just to make the Tourney is enough and that he does not want to put too much pressure on St John’s.

He sounds like he does not remember Lav’s first year at all. Says its been light years since St John’s has been relevant.

Said Lav had multiple highly regarded recruiting classes that didn’t work out, academics and other issues, until now.

He likes our guards especially Jordan but says D Lo is clutch. Says it’s a nice combo. Guys not afraid to take big shots.

When it comes to college basketball Fatso is way in over his head.

The opening week of the NCAA Tournament is some of the best radio all year listening to that buffoon pontificate about the teams and games. A lot of references to "the kid" "the big" "the freshman" and other vague terms to cover up his ineptitude in not knowing any of the players. Then he will have on "expert" Jon Rothstein to break the tournament down and then interrupt him whenever he goes to speak. He will pick a 12 over a 5 because "that happens every year" and away he goes. LOL

It iis good for a laugh but we cant take anything this man says seriously when it comes to college bball...its the equivalent of him coming on and trying to talk about health and fitness - cant be taken seriously.

If they haven't already, the school should send him some SJU gear while he is on the bandwagon.

There's no way they sell his size.
