Listening to the alumnus today. He said he liked the way Lav built the team, and that they played good defense and had a go-to guy in D'. He said that a winning SJU has always been embraced by the NYC area, and would be again. A few callers also brought them up, although the calls were mostly brief. Good to hear that we're getting some burn!

Mike, you should have talked ESPN into topping FOX's deal, while giving the Big East as much airtime. Otherwise, it is what it is. FS1 is in its first year. I suspect that they will become better known in coming years.

Of course they will get better, but that's not the point. Right now, present day, not playing games on ESPN is hurting St. Johns' buzz. There hasn't been a valid point stated to show differently.

I work in the industry as well and totally understand ratings. However it is year 1. Again how many games were on ESPN or ESPN2 last year? Most of the games were on ESPNU or ESPN3. How many Big Mondays have we been on in the last 3 years lets say?

Lastly winning creates buzz. We sucked the 1st half of the BE season and we are on a run right now. If the run continues great. And if the run continues ESPN will talk about us just like they fawn over McDermott and Nova's play this year.

The deal with FS1 is still hurting us...most of my friends (non sju fans) don't even know what channel that is.

It would be nice to play some games on ESPN....

How hard is it to look once, find it, write it down and move on. Eventually it will get ingrained in your memory.

Nobody actually does that...writes down a channel. Casual/non-st. johns fans go back to what they know...if they're looking for college hoops, the first channel they will turn on is ESPN. I do the same when st. johns is playing.

you can't deny that the lack of games on ESPN hurts us.

I'm one of the younger posters. I write things down. It's not hard. Eventually I remember the channel.

Last year games were scattered. ESPN a couple times. ESPN2 a few, ESPNU more, ESPN3 a lot. How many people here (those who write things down) didn't have a clue what ESPN3 was. Then we had PLENTY of games scattered on MSG, SNY, YES, and the like. The year the first game of the year was on FS2 and pretty much every single other game is on FS1. Pretty easy if you ask me.

How does lack of ESPN 'hurt' SJU? Or any Big East school for that matter. The same BE that has the 2nd highest number of Top 100 recruits for next year behind the ACC? Sure hasn't affected brand awareness there. And in terms of word of mouth from the ESPN blowhards? I could care less. And let not go there with the conspiracy theories that a lack of ESPN deal will effect bids etc...

I actually don't know what any channel is on my cable by memory. All I do is hit the "Guide" button on the remote, flip to the HD channels, and scroll through the sports section. It tells me what sports and what teams are playing. It's not very complicated.

Twenty plus years ago, when WFAN was launched, the afternoon drive guy was an older, abrasive know-it-all named Pete Franklin. IF you didn't know him, think Bob Grant but only sports. Not long into his tenure they fired him and hired a couple of likeable young unknowns, Francessa and Russo. Roll it forward, and not Francessa is the old, pompous, arrogant windbag. Can't wait for him to be done, but then again, I pay for XM Sirius not to listen to his nonsense.

I can't believe we even talk about Francessa as much as we do.

To your point, if we start winning and are ranked, ESPN will be forced to show highlights of every one of our games, which goes a long way to creating buzz.

Honestly, I could give a rat's ass about national buzz. If the local media starts covering us to the point that it creates a NYC buzz, the Garden will be hopping soon. We had a taste of the 3 years ago, but the full blown effect is SJU is as big as the pro teams in town.

Does anyone have actual stats of how many games we played and won on ESPN in recent years? And I mean ESPN, not the various sub stations of ESPN.

Correction, we had 17 games on ESPN, ESPN 2 or ESPNU

Since you broke it down do you have the breakdown by channel? Im guessing 2 on ESPN. Detroit and some BE game.

By the way admitting you work for the parent company of ESPN was bad idea haha. Should have just let your sound like TV expert in general :)

FS1 is a new channel. You need to give a few years to get some momentum. In the meantime if we can consistently win we will ahve people looking for the games. "Just win baby"

The importance of playing on ESPN vs. Fox1 isn't about overall numbers; it's that recruits around the nation are more likely to watch ESPN, because that's where the big games are shown. It's one thing if fans in other parts of the country don't get a "buzz" about St. John's because we're not on ESPN, but it's something else -- something very important -- if top-tier recruits in other parts of the country aren't getting to see us play. For one thing, they don't get a buzz about us, the Garden, and our style of play; for another, they want to play collegiate ball on TV's biggest stage, and hands-down that's ESPN.

You work for ABC, which is affiliated with ESPN. It sounds very disingenuous and I would say presents a conflict of interest for you to promote ESPN as much as you do. It does make me question your motives.

Plus, ABC is completely Disneyfied! 'Nuff said!

So then, tell us. What should the Big East have done? What better offer should they have taken? And, finally, what is your point?

You mean we really play on TV? I wish we had something like a channel guide available on cable TV.

Most americans are lazy...even something as simple as looking up a channel on the guide is too much work. Pathetic? Yes...but still the truth. .

"Most americans are lazy?" Wow! That's quite a generality to make. .[/quote]

Yeah, not so much. Now if he'd stated that most Americans are pathetic there might have been call for a little debate, not much but a little.

It really depends on what one means by buzz. Of course ESPN and ESPN2 get far more viewers than FS1 at this point. Not sure but probably ESPNU as well. Local buzz should be driven by local media so which chanel it's on is irrelevant.

But that other buzz, what does it mean? It has no affect on getting a bid, all it might mean is when you sit down next to some guy at a bar at DFW between flights and shoot the shit they'd have a 12% chance of being able to name a player on STJ rather than a 4% chance. It's reallly meaningless.

And with that said, like Simplyred (awful band by the way) said, it's all show me the money. That'll help the BE and the teams more in the long run compete with the mega conferences. That and some success in the dance.
