Sounds to me like he's already making excuses(IE Deaths, births, CO's injury) in the event we don't make the tourney. But then I'm skeptical of almost everything that comes out of his mouth.

May be time to get focused on to task at hand, no need to continue to recite the array of personal issues the team has faced. That has been amply done. Time for Coach Lavin and team to get the job done. In my opinion this team has one final opportunity to achieve Coach's stated goal of NCAA participation. If we fail, no excuses. If so, go on to the NIT & prepare for doing damage in Big Dance next year. Assuming core of team remains, not achieving that goal will be quite disappointing.

Both....maybe. 5 deaths? I mean I'm not keeping track, and I may have missed one or two, but come on now. He mentioned that a few times during the interview. Its lame IMO to even bring it up. And why even mention Sanchez and CO having each missed a game. Like I said, count me amongst the skeptics. I can accept that.

Two members of Rysheed's family (originally reported as a murder-suicide). Sanchez's mentor. I haven't seen details surrounding Dom's situation. May have been two.

Trust me(or not), I am not insensitive to the death of loved ones. But at the same time sadly many have had to deal with horrific issues their entire young lives, and have persevered. Good for them! Lavin bringing these things up(a number of times no less) on a radio talk show is self-serving IMO.

Under Lavin our program produces one human interest story after another. It's almost as if he's uncomfortable talking about the product on the court.

Francesa announced simulcast plans today.

Fox Sports 1 from 1-4 pm. Fox Sports 2 from 4-6 pm. Begins March 24.

"Under Lavin our program produces one human interest story after another. It's almost as if he's uncomfortable talking about the product on the court.[/quote]"

Why is that a surprise? Most y'alls sayin' he ain't an Xs/Os kind of guy anyway, so what if he finds poetry in others and not in stats or something? Sheesh. :) I think it's part of his nature. He can sell, but he seems to be genuine as a human being who was raised well. And maybe he remembers what we can't...Rysheed is an 18 year old. I work with kids around that age, and trust me, they can't handle the day-to-day half the time, never mind some truly traumatic family events and health situations. D'Lo with the brother locked up, the long path and journey of a Dominican father, and so many other stories of an enjoyable group of youngins... These kids have lives, and are not paid athletes yet. Lav's humanity seems to be a consistent theme, and his soul may have saved a season his x/o approach almost destroyed. Hopefully these petty semantics about every quote in pointless articles are not on your mind come 2:30 tomorrow baby! :) And when you're rooting...remember, it's that human interest element that has many of us being so emotionally attached to this team.

Peace.

I'm not saying there aren't honest to goodness tragedies, I'm asking why does Lavin constantly publish it to the world? You don't think players on other teams have been through hard times? You work with kids this age, do you think their circumstances are unique at SJU? I would venture to guess others have been through similar days.

Comfort the guys, and be a solid human being. I'm all for that. But I don't think you have to mention deaths in the family when a sports talk host asks you about the Big East Tournament. I know I know, you all are going to say "but that will effect their play in the tournament!", I get that, but some things just don't need to be constantly brought up at every possible juncture with the media.

Mike was on live from the Garden prior to tonights double header. They asked him about his new gig and he said he did it for the money.
Also spoke about Alma mater SJU and long history with the Big East.

Listen, you want to say the guy can't coach a lick, that's subjective, and up to you. You want to say he talks a lot - yea, and in New York you have to be able to handle the press if you are going to survive no less thrive.

But if you ask me, the thing that made Carnesecca an icon, an absolute gem for the University, for Queens, and for NYC, is his passion for the school, the kids who played here, alums, fans. He is about as accessible as they come, and goodness flows from the man.

Lavin may have lost an NCAAA bid, and if you want you can pin it on him.

But he could have lost Harrison last season, and instead, his intervention not only turned around Harrison's career here, but quite likely, his life. Jordan appeared on the verge of bolting, and Lavin sent him home to be with his ailing mom - putting the kid above a win or loss. I'd like to think I'm a decent guy, but I would have done my best to have Sanchez stay for the huge nova game - Lavin allowed him to be with his wife after the birth of their child. I'm going to guess that with Jordan's aunt being murdered, to my knowledge by her husband, Jordan could have self destructed, and I'm not just talking bball. I'm guessing Lavin and staff wrapped themselves around the kid. I could be dead effing wrong, but I'm gonna say based on what I've seen, Lavin is the real deal as a person, and has dealt with some of these kids in a masterful way, showing tough no nonsense rules enforcement when necessary, benching kids when they crossed the line, but also showing tremendous empathy for them personally. On a personal level I'd much rather judge him by these examples then by what comes out of his mouth at a press conference.

Maybe, just maybe, the reason he talks about the tragedies when asked about the BET and the team, is that what the kids are going through consumes him as well. I could be wrong, but don't you think a phony would slip up and say something like, "Yes, we've had some tragedies, but winning games has to come first." Sure, some of us may even prefer him to think that way.

If we say "We ARE St. John's" then what is St. John's." Not some basketball machine that's competed and won championships - no, that's UCONN, or Syracuse. IF it's a school that's special, a program that's special, if WE are anything, then when tragedies strike these kids, then WE really care. I would guess that for all of us, we forget about those issues - a brother in jail, violent deaths, illnesses - within 5 minutes of reading about them. But for a real coach at the college level, those things never go away, do they?

Excellent post. Cancer survivors view the world through very different glasses than the rest of us.

Beast I respect your opinion, but I aint buying for one second that Lavin is the Father Flanaganesque person that you're making him out be. Not saying that he's a bad guy, but he has a very very very long way to go before being view in the same light as Louie.
