Fordham (MSG), Sat., Dec. 16, 3:30p, FS1

Golly gee, how come the rest of us didn’t think of that! Pitino does not use zones. He has spent months trying to teach these guys man defense. But in second half of BC game, he should have told the team—- let’s go zone! More brilliant input from the board! This stuff is hilarious.

What’s even funnier would be anyone who would believe that Pitino doesn’t teach zone.😂😂😂 If he doesn’t teach zone, how would he prepare his team to play against zones? 🤪

Worse SJU loss at rose hill was a Mahoney loss.
Red's up 1 with seconds to go. FU had the ball 94 feet from their basket. I look at the 5 guys Mahoney puts on the floor and proclaimed - where are the defenders. The rams drove the length of the court for an easy basket and a ram win. that is when I realized nice guy Brian was not the answer. during my 4 years in the bronx, the rams lost all 4 red men games by 2, 4, 5, and 5 points. All great games.

Last weekend's loss to BC, after leading by 10 without about 14 minutes left, really took the wind out of my enthusiasm for this game. [And this is the first time I've been on the board since sunday!] Even wins against the 2 local programs won't do enough to offset a fairly disappointing OOC schedule. I don't even want to talk about what either loss would mean.

Alleyne is shooting 36.4% from 3 this year and 37% for his career. We have to get this kid more good looks.

I liked almost every shot Dingle took against BC. It may sound silly but they barely missed. His confidence is way too low and he’s way too timid. His defense is awful though. He got beat backdoor so many times.

Either we use Dingle as an alpha scorer and let him create with Soriano or we have to sit him.
The problem isn't offense, I can live with a bad shooting night. He cannot defend, nor can Ledlum. They get blown past very easily, over and over.

Stat from Rothstein this morning:

  • Daniss Jenkins leads St. John’s with 110 field goal attempts. No other player on the Red Storm has taken more than 97 shots this season.

To supplement that, Daniss has averaged 5.8 assists a game as well.

Regarding Posh’s assist numbers, he averaged 4.2, 5.5, and 4.3apg his three seasons respectively.

Both Dingle and Ledlum have proven to be very good basketball players(at prior stops). What they are not is very good athletes(at this level). Hard to play good D against much more athletic and skilled players. in Ledlum's case, sometimes much bigger players also. They're not the only players on this team who are good basketball players but short on athleticism. That is one of those problems that's not fixable. Hopefully Rick can find the best way to utilize everyone's strengths and to compensate for their weaknesses.

What do you mean by they are not good athletes (at this level)? Not quick, not great leapers?

Not quick enough. Not fast enough(there's a difference between quick and fast). Not great leapers. Not strong enough against some comp. In Ledlum's case, not tall/long my enough.

Back in my youth , a long time ago . A MSG double header would be : Fordham Vs Manahattan and St John’s Vs NYU . The game would be a total sell out in the old Garden .

Lots of students from all 4 schools would attend . It was something !

Pitino's teams have never been zone defensive teams like Boeheim. Granted this team should use more zone because they are slow on man.

If we had a "red.fans meltdown meter" that rated how emotional the reaction is to a loss, I feel like a loss to Fordham at MSG would be a strong 9.1 out of 10 on the meltdown meter

And I cant promise I wont be contributing to that score 😮
Marquette, a top 10 team, barely squeezed by a team at home that they should have beaten by 20. There is a lot more balance in college basketball than 5 years ago.

It’s funny and I’m not picking on any poster but , you have to admit it’s funny for us Arm Chair QB’s to speculate and recommend to Pitino for this team to play Zone .

Bobby Knight , whom Pitino respected immensely , never played Zone . If you couldn’t play man to man, you couldn’t play for Bobby .

Louie was like that too. Never really used Zone , Al LoBalbo , widely respected Defensive Wizard , never liked Zone either .

Yet , Boeheim only played Zone all those years at. Syracuse

Hopefully we won't need to worry about zone against Fordham and overall I hate watching it but I see the strain on Rick's face when the team doesn't execute his defense and for his own health and long term longevity maybe he should try it a little.

But when you combine all those passes with all those shots, it's suffocating for everyone else. And the nature of those shots...early in the shot clock off the bounce from 30 feet when you are shooting 0-3 on the night and 27.9% fot the year? And when he sits, these guys have to figure out how to play together like it's week 1.

Jenkins passes well -- I'll give him that -- but his handle is not good and he routinely dribbles himself into situations that forces him to shoot or pass to avoid a turnover. And then there is the discrepancy of the fouls he commits v. the fouls he draws. 1.0 FTA a game is a mind-boggling stat for a slashing guard that dominates the ball as much as he does. Villanova won for two decades by doing the opposite.

Usage percentage:
Usage percentage is an estimate of the percentage of team plays used by a player while he was on the floor.

So far this year, Jenkins is 13th in the big east in usage% at 25%. Dingle is at 22%

Jenkins' usage was 26% last year.

To put in perspective for Dingle, his usage % at Penn was 35% and 34%. That put him 3rd and 7th in the NCAA those two years. That's a pretty significant adjustment to make.

Honestly, compelling points. If I keep agreeing with you Marillac, the world may end 😇
