Fire Lavin!

Really dumb thread. All I can think of is how Looie would have been thrashed online had their been a presence back then.
How about after the Florida NCAA game when Vernon Maxwell led the Gators to a close win with 5 other eligible players.
Looie would not take all prognosticators advice and press but had his team walk the ball up in a below 60's point game.
Yeah Fire Looie! that makes just as much sense as this.

Your post reminds me of the years I sat a few rows behind Looie at Alumni Hall in the student section that became an alumni section when they never moved us. Fans would shout out sharp criticisms to Looie (when it was quiet enough for him to hear them) that weren't loud enough to be heard cross court. Looie would reel around quickly, and offer a retort such as "You don't know what you're talking about", waving the comment off with a hand that "Get out of here, you are full of beans".

No less than Father Cahill, a passionate, impatient fan, (if possible, I think the nastier posts here might be his), would angrily tell people around him, "Looie's a great guy, but he can't win the big games." He watched nearly every home game from his perch behind the basket on the 164th St. side ducking inside the reception room frequently, presumably for a beverage or two.

To the topic of this thread, Lavin is NOT getting fired, period. Remember that the only reason he is here is that supposedly a few wealthy donors financed his salary AND convinced Harrington to make the move. No way St. John's would eat the remaining salary obligation, AND go out and spend $2 million to bring in a proven entity. In college athletics, alumni DO have a major voice, but that voice is concentrated in the form of major benefactors. You want Monasch's ear? or the incoming President? Pony up 7 figures, and you have a shot at some influence. Six figures won't get you far, and anything less, well, "thank you for your valued donation." Even if you do donate at the 7 figure level, expect that there are other 7 figure donors (or even an 8 figure donor) whose opinion weighs more than yours.

Everyone else, bitch here if it makes you feel better. But a grass roots movement to fire Lavin would yield nothing. It would be more productive to continue to root for wins, which might actually result in a home court advantage at MSG if you show up.

This isn't a post to support Lavin. I don't think that he shows disinterest by starting a walk on, or a Felix, as he has in recent games. I do think that perhaps some of his kids think they are stars just playing for SJU, and this is his way of showing that playing time is earned by on court performance and busting it in practice.

I wouldn't be surprised if he walked before his contract is up, but I don't think there's any way he gets fired, and in college you don't fire someone midseason. We did that once, ill-advised, and remember how that turned out (in Pittsburgh). I'll be showing up for the Nova game, and I'll be very surprised if our guys don't come to play.

The way Mark Jackson is doing at Golden State, perhaps it wouldn't have been so bad to go in that direction. Oh, I forgot, he had no coaching experience.

Just because Jackson is a St. John's grad does not mean he's a good coach. Warrior fans would gladly swap him for Lavin.

Agree on firing opinion. Walking seems to be more likely, via graceful exit. Just my opinion.

Basis for your opinion (which you are repeating almost as often as wasju repeats one of his "jokes")?

huh? I doubt that. Jackson took over a team that went 23-43 his 1st season that improved to 44-38 and made it to the 2nd round of the playoffs his 2nd season. This year he has them at 22-13 tied for 1st in arguably the best division in the NBA. In what bizarro world would they gladly swap him for Lavin

Could not have said it better! If there was a "thumbs up" icon, I would show it here.

I wouldn't fire or change head coaches. Lavin has done pretty good recruiting with what he has. We don't have a World wide Wes sending us kids, we don't get the cream of the crop like the Kentucky, UNC, Duke, Kansas of the world get on a regular basis. We seem to be playing the game of recruiting fair. That being said Lavin knew the shooting was an issue and got Hooper, and Marco. Now he has to figure a way to use them. Lavin has allot of pieces but not a single complete player, and that is what you end up with when you are getting second tier top 100 kids.. This team has no NBA players, so without that complete player we are going to struggle. The biggest complaint I have with Lavin is why do you call a timeout when you are the team on the run? Let them play with the energy, do not break it up. I think Lavin should be feeling some heat, and its up to his kids to respond by rallying around him. I think the problem is some of these kids think they are NBA talent, when clearly they are not, once they accept the fact that they are not then they can find their roles, and play as a team. Someone must of told Jakarr and CO, that they were pro's, they are clearly not.

St. John's predicted to finish 4th in the Big East Conference and make the NCAA Tournament.

Can the leader of the Men's basketball program turn things around?

I for one have no confidence based on what we saw yesterday, but you have to give Lavin the opportunity to turn things around. Problem i see is we win 8-9 games in the Big East but get no wins against Creighton, G-Town or Villanova, and may lose a few against Butler, SH, Providence, and at this point, maybe even DePaul..

8-10 last season.. 9-9 or 10-8 this season and no NCAA Tournament.

They don't match up well against G-town and don't adjust at all when they play them. And Jordon transfers out...

With almost 24 hours having passed since this embarrassment I have put the razor blade away...still disheartened and concerned by the issues (lineups, lack of organization and a plan) facing us but will have to move on and look forward to Nova game...I still believe the talent is there and don't feel like beating them will require a miracle...just a plan and some unselfish and inspired play...

Obviously something is going on behind the curtain...only plausible explanation for what appears to be a constant series of disciplinary/motivational measures

I get negative when the job is not getting done but these are the players he recruited. Length and size are
great but he forgot about players who can shoot and have high basketball IQs Having the best shot blocker has its place but. giving us no offense and foul shooting and getting beat most of the time on back doors means others have to fill the gaps. With this staff I thought they would have had great direction and shown all the basics to be competitive in each and every game. Hate to say this but I am getting to think the players were over-rated and once they had to play against Div 1 comp they were just average .Now it could be they are just running up against a bad period and will turn it around but 2 games into confr .play it is to say the least upsetting .
Do not feel that Lavin should be fired. he has great recruiting ahead of him and by 2015 things could look different. Also that no 2014 recruits have shown high interest is a bit disconcerting. COACHS starting line ups and subs seem to be haphazard Hope they dig deep and find themselves. Feel Lavin is a great representative for our school and I for one will give him at least 2 more yrs before calling for a replacement

Thank You for a dose of reality extinguishing one of the stupidest posts ever. I'm not sure we ever had a shot at Mark but surely his supposed lack of experience should apply to Lavin where the NBA is concerned. Fact is that Lavin has very few opportunities right now and they will diminish with every BE disaster he coaches. There is no fun connected with this program and starting walkons or subs isn't going to cure that. Thanks Steve for rewarding ticket holders with assurance that we made our annual mistake. You're nothing if not consistent.

This is so off-base, its hilarious.

His great recruiting ahead assumes that he hasn't turned off prospective recruits. If you see a coach starting walkons over top 30 players would you want to join that?

Do we even know if he would have had interest in coming here? Personally, I think we were Jackson's 31st choice for a job on a list of 30 he wanted, if you know what I mean.

We don't have a player outside maybe Sheed that gets more then 10 minutes a game on Kansas. Sampson would already be sitting out waiting for next year. Do any of you think Self would put up with his style of Play? Lavin has to, and no doubt the staff doing what they can to help all the players improve their game. I 'm not cutting Lavin slack for the teams showing, but he 's far from working with jewels.

Then why was Self putting the push on Sampson? Perhaps because he felt Karr has talent and athleticiism and could be "coached" to become a better player within his system.

Section, your right. Sampson might be doing better under Self, but might not have took to the sitting until his Junior year. Thats why he 's here. Steve must play a lot of guys big minutes because there was no foundation to the team. Guys playing 25/30 now should have gotten 10 to start. Thats how it works at a lot of places, but Coach had nobody else. No one on this team started playing 10 and worked their way up.
