Fear and Loathing on redmen.com

After a few days of not reading the forum/message board, I thought I would come to this thread to see if Federico's health situation has improved. Clearly a mistake. It's kind of funny/sad to read people complain about this thread being 22+ pages long, but in reality, it's about a page and a half of content related to the original subject.

I hope he's feeling better, but I should wouldn't find that out on this particular thread. He's an asset on this team, and by all accounts a good kid who represents us well on and off the court. So it's a bit puzzling that he's getting trashed on everything from his playing ability to his heritage. Kind of pathetic.

Couldn't have said it better. This whole string is ridiculous.

I have to agree w Fun. Because a poster may think Mussini is a 1 trick pony doesn't make it Italian bashing. We all agree he is a great teammate and an asset. We all wish him a speedy recovery. This is a thread about Mussini so discussion about his game is warranted on this thread.

Watching DePaul game there were stretches where I thought that with Mussini we would have blown their doors off, as they were scrambling to deal with penetrating guards and kickouts to Muss would have finished them.

But to be fair, would his very poor defense have hurt us in second half when we held DP to 33 points?

Stuff about his heritage--should be off limits, no doubt.

But for the life of me, I can't understand why so many are offended by those who want to critique his playing ability. This is a fan forum for a BASKETBALL TEAM. This is a player who averages 20 minutes a game. What are we supposed to discuss--his performance on his midterms? His love life?

Put him on Harrison-Docks and have him collapse in agony every time one of the guys setting picks moved a hip.

I like him his def has a place and a purpose on the team. There is going to be a time that he come in a hit 3-4 3s in a row and breaks zones for us

You really can not win with out good def although if you have a great offense and just out score the other team you can go undefeated lol

Ellison is really improving and has nice size. I think Mullin really likes him. Played most minutes yesterday. I think if our other guards are healthy , Mussinis minutes are going to be decreased a lot. IMO he is too much of a liability on defense relative to our other guards and add Simon in the mix for next year.

Looks the same size as bashir. He has to improve his all around shooting usually hits one of 2 of his foul shots. Perhaps it is just the times I saw him Feel Bashir shoots better Both can develop into above average players even maybe optimistically next level

How much you want to bet than when Lovett leaves next year or year after we have a thread of 'good riddance", "good luck in Uzbekistan" and maybe even a few "punk and quitter".

Next year when Mussini goes back to Europe we will only have "Thanks for choosing to come over here", Wish you the best" and "you were unjustly criticized".

Anyone want to take the bet the above doesn't happen?

Of course we can discuss and should discuss his performance on the court, and he absolutely can be a liability on the defensive end of the floor in a man to man D, but this thread took on a life of it's own that was mean spirited towards FM as well as some other posters, not cool on either front. I see him as a role player who's role was getting more and more defined until he was out sick. A good "for instance"...as DePaul needed to foul at the end of the game to give themselves a chance, would you rather see Ellison in or Mussini? Ellison has taken some nice strides this year, and also is benefitting from a more defined role, but do you want him on the line with a minute left in a close game?

There's nothing wrong with being a little more fond of a player because he is Italian. We of course will always have a soft spot in our hearts for guys we have a connection to, be it heritage, ethnicity, alma mater, etc.

If a super-handsome, charming, brilliant, well-hung guy signed tomorrow, it would be like looking in a mirror, so of course I'd root for him a little bit more.

But if that otherwise studly guy played poor D and was probably going to lose his spot the following season, there isn't necessarily a deeper meaning to others bashing him beside that.

Since we don't have Westbrook and Curry as our guards to just out score the other team on a regular basis it should be noted that our winning streak started when our commitment to D improved. Unfortunately our teams worst defender has not played during that time.

Lest I offend anyone I will begin with what appears the obligatory Mussini introduction.

1. Thanks, Ferderico, for signing your original letter of intent
2. I hope your are getting healthy
3. I hope you stay four years and would never suggest otherwise (for me this goes for every player SJU gives an LOI)
4.If you do ever leave to go back to Italy because it suits your needs I understand
5.Given space you are an excellent three point shooter

Apologies if I missed anything.

However I buy tickets to watch SJU play as well as they can, and they charge real dollars. I don't see how playing Mussini over 20 minutes, which he had been doing, is a good idea. Ponds and Lovett are better than him. Ellison can do things he cannot do and is a superior match with Ponds and Lovett. Mussini can help, it's a long season, and he will be very useful if Lovett or Ponds miss any time. Unless that happens I wouldn't want to see him play over ten minutes when he returns.

There are SJU teams where Mussini warranted major minutes. We only have to go back as far as last year to find one. This year our guard depth has been improved tremendously and that changes things.

I'm sure I'd have similar sentiments, especially if he were smart and had a sense of humor to boot. Yes criticizing Mussini is not indicative of some sort of deeper anti-Italian bias. Nor is supporting him, and thinking he can still be an asset to this team, somehow motivated by racism. As has been implied a number of times on this thread.

And you expect that will happen based on what? Certainly not how we treated Harkless and Sampson when they left, and since then. Can't be based on how we've reacted so far to rumors that Lovett may leave. So what exactly are you basing your prediction on?

I just went back and read this entire thread because I thought I must have misremembered what I wrote. Turns out I didn't. I said in about a dozen posts in 22 pages that Missini was the most overrated player since Matt Brust, that he was about as good as Heath Orvis but not as good as Phil Missere, and detailed what I perceive to be his myriad flaws as a basketball player. That might be mean spirited but mean spirited is what I do: that's why everyone loves me. For my troubles I was called and I'm quoting: a scumbag, a racist, anti-italian, stupid, obsessed and pathetic. The fact is that I don't care anything about Missini beyond what I see on the court: not where his ancestors come from or what color his skin is or what god he worships or which bathroom he wants to use. The only physical characteristic of his that is even of the vaguest interest to me is his height, or more properly his lack of it. If Fan A wants to root for Player X simply because he possesses Chromosome Y, god bless, have at it. That I do not share that prejudice doesn't make me prejudiced. Quite the opposite.

Jordan, Obekpa, Lindsey, Cook, SAMPSON
If it doesn't happen I will say I was wrong. Lets see
You are right Harkless seemed to get a pass from what I can remember

Oh come on. Every time someone leaves its addition by subtraction. Sampson was a cancer who made a huge mistake leaving early and had no shot at making an NBA roster. Good riddance to Christian Jones, who is not a Big East player. See ya Nurideen Lindsey, you're a pussy who quite on your teammates. Ditto Sima, leaving mid year. Conversely can you remember any posters thanking Quincy Roberts for his service to Saint John's and congratulating him for being such a good citizen and wishing him good luck in all his future endeavors? He was injured quite a bit, were there any 22 page threads expressing concerns about his head injury? Because I don't recall any.

Is that racism though, or simply us being petty bitches 99 percent of the time? There have been horrible racists on these boards, but other than a handful of guys toeing the line these days with borderline racist jokes, I think the board has been cleaned up pretty good over the past few years.

I don't know Monte, but he seems like a pretty good guy. Never got the impression he was a racist from any of his posts. I can't honestly fault him for liking the Italian player if his own name ends in a vowel.
