Facilities Development

Listen Beast the University has done a great job over the years bringing the St Johns campus and facilities into the 21 century!. For those alumni who have not been back to visit the campus you owe it to yourself to do so! The campus is magnificent! It is nothing compared to the campus I attended from 1968 to 1972, Now it’s time to devote their resources to their flagship program “College basketball” We need to put up an arena that will allow us to be at least on par with the other programs in the Big East! Did you ever consider that if we put up a state of the art arena that attendance may actually increase significantly because of it? Let’s be honest our arena is a proverbial dump and an embarrassment to our University! I mentioned on this board that if they were to build a arena I would become a season ticket holder even though I live 8 months in my other home in Florida! Maybe just maybe there are numerous alumni who feel the same way. Listen I don’t have all the answers but it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that something needs to be done!
Why not have a targeted fund drive dedicated solely to developing money for an arena and fund the balance with a bond issue over 20 years! Assuming we can raise 50 million with a targeted fund drive the University would only need to float a 50 million dollar bond issue at now very favorable rates! Then I would bury CA and use that space to to utilize and expand  other academic initiatives! Let’s put up an arena that people will want to attend! CA IS NOT IT!

I don’t believe a $100 mil investment in an on campus arena is cost effective.

It can’t just be an arena. To have state of the art facilities, player dorms, and arena (not big, but top quality), we are looking at a minimum of $50 million and probably more like $75 million.

Preferably where the arena would have access to mass transportation! I thought that maybe somewhere in Nassau County but that would preclude having mass transportation in all likihood!  I would think that the Nassau Coliseum could be purchased at a reasonable cost but that is pure conjecture on my behalf. If it could you could renovate the entire arena and when we are not playing basketball you could rent it out for other venues such as concerts, etc…. This income could offset the debt service for the arena!

When we talk "facilities" on this forum, its amazing how divided we are on what that should mean and which should come first, second or at all.

some just want the training & player facilities needed to help recruit

Others only care about a new 10K arena w/ cushions.

It's been said a million times by those in know, a new arena is not happening. Maybe not even a CA filled w/ cushions. Cushions won't help recruiting.

Let's start "small" and just get the training and player facilities needed.

Rather than see what the experienced SJ President and Athletic Director have in mind re strategic plan and inherent challenges perhaps we should just throw shit against the wall. :)

C'mon Paultz, didn't many great civilizations in history mix it with a little sand or other binder to build ?

Lol

New facilities will help with recruiting. I'm not sure how much upgrades to CA will will help with attendance. Historically CA has predominantly been a destination for our most rabid(pun intended) fans. MSG,
OTOH, has always been a big draw for SJU and non-SJU fans alike.  Impartial fans, as many of my friends are, will almost always support SJU at MSG. IMO, regardless of what happens with the facilities, we should be scheduling more games at MSG  against marquee programs. Since Nova and UCONN are the only marquee programs in the Big East, we need to get back to playing Duke, etc at MSG. 2-3 games a year against top programs. Those games alone are worth their weight in exposure.

PC is very landlocked. Under Shanleys direction over his years there the school slowly purchased neighboring properties and even a street from the city allowing them to build their top notch athletic facilities and upgrade their soccer and lax fields. I would imagine his plan at SJU will be the same.

AJ you should never have given the blueprint to where the heat is supplied to CA. I am very afraid of what mjm might do. Just hope he doesn't get caught. /media/kunena/emoticons/wink.png/media/kunena/emoticons/smile.png
Haaaa I was just thinking when rereading it wtf does Carnesseca need a big heating system for :)

Apologies for snapping at you. I think if we ever got to the point at which you are referring we would have to have shown evidence that we could draw 8 to 10k for an OOC schedule plus lesser night east teams. I think if the money was unavailable to redo CA and expand capacity, ubs and msg would be used for games we could put 10 to 15k in seats.

You seem to be coming to my two cents again regarding an arena.  Turn Carnesecca in to a pure training and development facility for athletics (the Lapchick Center) and play home games at domed Louis Armstrong facility at the US Open Tennis Center outfitted for winter use with a heating plant.  Subway and LIRR are both right there, there is parking ad infinitum at Citifield lots, and run a campus shuttle service for games and call it the LOU-LOU for Armstrong and Carnesecca.  Tennis seating is @14k.

Creative idea but the LIRR is on the port wash line which doesn't go through jamaica. Not even sure the bubble would be be useful in winter. UBS a much better arena.

I love going to arthur ashe stadium but it feels like you are a mile away from many seats

Island Garden in West Hempstead.  Small arena with limited parking.  Perfect.

Just imagine if there was a device that would allow fans to witness games for free without leaving their homes? We wouldn't need arenas.

Was thinking of that wasn't sure if still there. Nets used to play there when they had Sonny Dove.

Not the same place. There's a shopping center on that site.
For those old enough to remember the island Garden it was torn down and a shopping center built.  The archethat stood outside, remiscent of the one in St. Louis, remains.

The new island Garden was converted from an old warehouse by investors including Jim fox, a former cop. The long island lightning aau program call it home. Unsure if the ny lightning program where Posh and Wusu played is the same outfit.

Its located on a property contiguous to the old island garden
