(Exhibition) Adelphi, Wed. Oct. 26, 7pm, ESPN-3

Only an exhibition, but I was not impressed. Team looks undisciplined as usual. Other than Jones, I’m not sure anybody else can create their own shot.

I think Soriano will be improved this year but I think it’s unfair and unrealistic to expect that he’ll all of a sudden he a world beater. I thought Mathis looked good. Would love to see a more consistent disciplined version of him this year. He’s an elite athlete with a ton of experience. Hasn’t shown discipline or consistency in four years so unlikely he’ll completely transform but we’ve seen a few kids put things together their final year (e.g., Dom Pointer, David Cain) so hope springs eternal.

One thing is for certain — we need to improve a heck of a lot from last night to contend for a top half finish in the Big East! Hoping for the best!

Nice review Mase. I woukd like to follow up in your Soriano comments. To date, the Helter Skelter defense has never been a positive for this team and frankly keeps a team like Adelphi in the game. In fact, early on (first 15 minutes) Adelphi had so many open threes it was awful. Fortunately for St Johns they missed almost all of them.

When Soriano got offensively involved at the 15 minute mark he thankfully went on a scoring streak as the game was tied at that point. Less Helter skelter d gave him the energy to get offensive.

I also agree with the multiple lineup issue but it’s early in the season and hopefully that will pan out. What I don’t like is the constant changing if personnel as players don’t seem to have enough time to get into the flow of tge game.

Thanks JR. I would say there were times in the first and second season under CMA where the pressure D had its moments and was a positive overall. Of course it came with lows as well. But those teams didn’t have a center like Soriano worth playing 20+ minutes a game. Thus the very important issue to address. Can’t do both I fear.

Got out to the Arena last night- figure it was the best game to take the 4 and 2 yr old to. Similar take-aways that have been stated: we are lucky to have gotten Jones, he and Omar seemed to be the only ones with energy early. SOoooooo many Open 3s... feel like its been that way no matter who the coach is... Pinzon, not sure he'll be able to stay on the floor- if he seemed a step slow on D vs Adelphi, gonna be rough for him come real opponents.

AOB: Gardener was at the game- good to see. Just being a jaded SJU fan, really hope he signs the LOI. Hopefully he wasn't expecting a raucous crowd from an exhibition game, just hope he doesn't have 2nd thoughts

Aaron (Wheels) Wheeler was transformed by this current staff in his final year so your hopes for Mathis' improvement are not just a pipe dream.

oh- one more AOB:
-New seatbacks.... oof... not sure what the consensus will be on these... but was not too impressed. Felt as if the seat was pushing my body forward making my knees go into the seats in front of me (6'5- so that might happen naturally anyway).

Wonder what the price diff was on on these cushions vs. the installing the seats in the lower bowl?

I saw those seat backs and they basically took those portable seat backs and put a pillow under it. That ain't gonna cut it. Nickel and dime...

Also the Adelphi fan base basically sat in my seats and had to sit in a different section. At least my daughter got one of the T-Shirts (which are now "uniforms") so not a complete bust.

I don't think he will be or needs to be a world beater, like Watson or Sonogo. He improved immensely by the end of last year to become an above average center in the BE. That's way more than what we had for many years, so I am happy to have his contributions.

I think the lack of depth is more of an indictment of Lavin's final years and almost the entirety of Mullin's tenure.

This is the way it's supposed to be. And I'm glad we have a staff that knows this and has executed it.

Just saw a replay of the game and while Jones was great on the boards and creating his shot, he didn’t make many…. 3 for 10. I’ll assume he just had an off night or had opening night jitters.

College basketball is filled with inconsistent shooting nights. This is not an anomaly. If one of those misses goes in he’s at an ok 40%. If 2 went in we’re happy as hell he shot 50%. Just the same, we shouldn’t look into Curbelo shooting 6/7 as a hugely positive sign.

Same takeaways as most. Jones might prove to be more versatile/powerful than Julian. All that matters for us is late game execution, if we have fixed the crunch time blockage w capable playmakers in Curbelo and Jones, YOY improvements from all of the returnees and added pop from our freshmen we are in damn good shape.

I'm sorry to report that the new seats are going to prove to be hellish for sellout crowds. It's truly a game of inches and the limited room between seats has been eliminated. As starkly more comfortable as they are over the plastic bucket seats, being forced to sit at a straight 90 degree angle forces your knees forward. If you are heavy set or above 6'2 it's going to be a disaster for you as well as the people to the left, right and in front of you. I'm at a loss w it and appreciate the efforts, but Lord help us during sold out games.

As a replacement for Julian? that’s a bit of a stretch but would be a nice surprise if he could come close to Julian’s Sophomore numbers.

Biggest takeaways:
Johnny Bird had a weak showing. I believe he heldout for more birdseed and missed a chunk of the offseason workouts. Rounding into shape though

The cheer squad brought out the flags in the second half Spelling the team - "S T J O N H S". Need to work that out before BE Play.

The flag boy is like 5' 4" / 110lbs. May be a struggle this year. I hear we are in the running for Highly Rated HS prospect for the spot next year. His finalists are us and Memphis.

Otherwise take it for what it is. Just an exhibition.

They put up the same RPG as Big East sophs. I don't think it's unreasonable for a guy who averaged over 14 in the BE to come close to 19 as a Jr. I think 17 PPG is a reasonable expectation. Hopefully doesn't airball the biggest shot of his college career though.

It's weird, but as a program we've done surprisingly well the year AFTER a star leaves.

86 - Chris leaves and Mark and Walter lead us to the BE Championship and a #1 seed.
93 - Malik leaves and David Cain leads us to a 2nd-place BE finish.
99 - Felipe leaves and Ron Ron leads us to the Elite 8.
00 - Ron Ron leaves and Barkley and Bootsy lead us to a BE championship.

Not an exact science so not quite predictable.

But I see us with a legit shot at a national championship.

Funny. My research has proven this to be true. I was about to author my 3 year thesis on this very topic.

Once again beaten to the punch.

I just got back from a work trip is there a way to watch the game from last night. Thanks in advance
