Hope I’m wrong but I don’t think Soriano will sniff those numbers. Eight and six more likely.

Boo, I agree we may not get 14 & 9 from Soriano but he was roughly 6 and 6 in his first year of Big East competition and appears to be doing everything the staff wants in terms of conditioning, leadership etc. I'd be a little disappointed if he doesn't give us at least 10-11 ppg and 7 plus rbds pg.

As a replacement for Julian? that’s a bit of a stretch but would be a nice surprise if he could come close to Julian’s Sophomore numbers.

To me, Champagne was very frustrating to watch last year. Yes he averaged 19 ppg. But it's so easy to forget those stretches he went through where he was shooting so terribly. So many forced shots. He ended up shooting 41% from the field last year and 33% from 3, neither which is great. Much of it was being forced out of necessity, but still have to keep this in mind.

Agreed, thats why I referred to Julian's All Big East Sophomore season.

Nice review Mase. I woukd like to follow up in your Soriano comments. To date, the Helter Skelter defense has never been a positive for this team and frankly keeps a team like Adelphi in the game. In fact, early on (first 15 minutes) Adelphi had so many open threes it was awful. Fortunately for St Johns they missed almost all of them.

When Soriano got offensively involved at the 15 minute mark he thankfully went on a scoring streak as the game was tied at that point. Less Helter skelter d gave him the energy to get offensive.

I also agree with the multiple lineup issue but it’s early in the season and hopefully that will pan out. What I don’t like is the constant changing if personnel as players don’t seem to have enough time to get into the flow of tge game.

Soriano will do well in this uptempo system.

Oliver Miller was arguably the best big man in Razorback history and he was 6' 9" and 280 lbs and he anchored the post for a team went to a Final Four, a Sweet Sixteen and an Elite Eight while playing the same 40 minutes of Hell style that CMA employs.

It’s not the tempo that is the problem. It’s the guarding guys in open space and on the perimeter. When Oliver Miller played the 3 point shot wasn’t nearly the weapon it is today.

Hope that’s right. I’d be very happy with 10 and 7

Just finished watching the 2nd half- was nice to see Coach switch up the D (zone) based on personnel on the floor. Don't remember seeing that too much past couple years.

A couple of thoughts in looking back on the game--even though it was "only" an exhibition vs. Div 2 team:

minutes/player--11 players had double digit mnutues--similar to last year and the way CMA wants to play; I really want more Posh at 25-28 minutes per game to rest him as he plays 110% effort. Will enhance him down the stretch.

Curbelo--he is playing a different style than he played at Illinois which might be better suited to his game. Illinois averaged 55 shots per game; in the exhibition we had 72 shots (and averaged 67/game last year). With the running game he may be able to get inside rather than exposing his o/s shooting. It will be interesting to watch his development and how CMA works to get the right balance of Posh and Andre.

After watching the game my main concern is OUR 3 point shooting AND the flip side is wide open 3 point shooters.

I don’t see enough good shooters on our team and I could see major “droughts“ against better competition.

The pressing defense is great against weaker teams. Better teams will move the ball around creating wide open looks at the 3. Teams with a few good shooters are going to drive us crazy. Too often our guys are just jumping out at shooters. That is not a sound defense against the 3.

Pristine post. Pressing scramble D works better against weaker teams good teams that have any 3 point shooting exploit it.

I don't think he will be or needs to be a world beater, like Watson or Sonogo. He improved immensely by the end of last year to become an above average center in the BE. That's way more than what we had for many years, so I am happy to have his contributions.
Soriano has transformed himself and his game further…was evident in DR…he is more agile and has developed some skills facing basket…plus he has become a team leader

No bad restaurants on LongBoat Key. Dry Dock, La Norma, Harry's, Euphemia Haye, Chart House, Shore etc.
Great Italian food downtown Sarasota at Cafe Amici. Run by an Italian family from Italy. Great wine list as well. Many good eateries and great entertainment in Sarasota. I love it here.
