Ex STJ Dean on Trial For Stealing From University

Very bad for the school and the good father should offer his resignation.

Why call him the Good father ? What good did he do to deserve that title??

Dirty Harry is more like it taking bribes of expensives watches & hawaiin, vacations,

Nothing is hidden he will pay just like any other man for his sins Vengence is the Lords   thank the Lord!!!

Thank you for bringing the thread back on line.

I too wish eternal damnation on the man. May he be flogged by Beelzebub's minions until the end of days. Huzzah.

Boy I am perplexed. What a scandal. What troubles me about Fr. Harrington is, with this in his background he certainly did not give Jarvis any slack. Maybe Jarvis was privy to some of this information and acted accordingly.
Offering a student $300 per month for his family does not seem very sinful. For Fr. Harrington to then speak of the
warped sense of values and mindset in the basketball program reeks of total hypocrisy. Almost a Kharma like
happening in retrospect to the Pittsburgh debacle.

Some great points brought up on this thread, when Father Harrington has a Board of Trustees that has rubber stamped his agenda for 23 years there is a danger of corruption. The question is there enough moral fiber on the board of trustees and within the senior level of the Vincentian community to ask Father Harrington to step down. Will Fr. Mike Carroll make the right call, Fr. James Maher is waiting in the wings. He is an SJU alum class of 1984 has run the SJU bread and life center for many years and has held various posts on campus. I would make the move over the summer quietly.

This woman not only was a thief of tremendous proportions, but she lived a lifestyle of wealth off donations intended for the good of the university. She died as a coward, unwilling to pay the price for her crimes, and leaving a family instead who will mourn her.

Father Harrington for his part, had his hand in the well. What priest worth anything would accpet cash "donations", and keep them in a locked draw as petty cash. What priest would accept little perks, like custom made suits that only the wealthy can afford. Why, one who really thinks he deserves it because he is CEO of St. John's, surrounded by very wealthy men on the board of trustees who are each worth tens of millions. Plain and simple, his lack of discretion caused him to be suckered into having her in his good graces by the generosity that was showered on him.

Worst of all, as a University CEO, he created and perpetuated an infrastructure of poorly paid and poorly qualified administrators and faculty, and true to SJU tradition, not enough of them, that the lack of oversight made this an accident that not only was waiting to happen, but mosre than likely has happened on smaller scales over the years.

I'm all for Maher's running things. Especially if it gets me moved down to better seats if people in the ticket office make the mistake of thinking we are related

Looks like she was defiant to the end, justifying her actions as performing a greater good (large fundraising efforts) even if she skimmed some off the top. Probably in her mind, it was a commission of sorts for the millions that poured into the university solely on her efforts. Like every good thief, she shared the wealth a little in proportion to her theft, with her bosses (Cahill and Harrington). Although they weren't complicit in the theft, they apparently had no problem accepting expensive inappropriate acts of kindness.

Amazing that her husband was murdered and that she was involved with Donald Manes (a lowlife who used his position of power to line his pockets)who also killed himself when it came time to face the music. I worked for a guy who bragged that he helped Manes by lying under oath about Manes primary residence (by law he should have lived in Queens but lived in Prt Washington I believe), In return Manes promised to get his son into med school.

A sordid chapter in the university history. The lack of oversight here is inexcusable.

She said on a death note "she bankrolled Father Cahills atlantic city trips" why bring that up now the mans been dead
for 25 yrs???? boy was she pissed off :eek:hmy:
Felt she was scapegoated thanks to the GQ Harry so she hung herself instead of going to jail shows how highly
corrupt this schools president really is ! :yell:

Dean Chang was employed for 30+/- years.

My understanding from the news reports is that Chang's mention of Father Cahill and Harrington was her belief that they turned a "blind eye" to her activities until it was exposed by an audit.

Harrington has embarrassed St. John's University.

Harrington should do the honorable thing and promptly resign as St. John's President.

Per N Y Daily News or was it the N Y Post article that with death of the dean the DA office will not pursue the embezzlment charge and was releasing the lien on her house which was valued at 1.3 million. Waiting to see if SJU will file a civil action to recover.

Hey!!! Congratulations! She definitely should know what she is getting herself into marrying you. Best wishes to both of you! It sounds like you are both very lucky to have each other.

Oh boy, the NYT article makes sordid reading:

"Indeed, in her handwritten notes, she wrote that she once had an intimate relationship with Father Cahill that included another woman employed by St. John’s. In addition to the sexual liaisons, Dr. Chang wrote that Father Cahill took her to the racetrack and to Atlantic City, usually removing his clerical garb “when we go out to play.” "

“Cecilia Chang was the person that paid the guy to shoot me.”

Bribery, extortion, gambling... She was a pistol. Incredible that this was going on and senior leadership at SJU did not stop it. Very disturbing...
