St Johns won an Empire Classic game. Enjoy it fellas. Geez…..

Exactly. This team will drive you crazy one moment, has you cheering like crazy the next. Need to remember it's just a game, a two hour release from the worries of everyday life and cheer like heck for these kids. Many, including me, were pounding Mathis regularly last year, now he's one of our heroes. One of the many great things about college basketball.

Excellent point on Mathis. He has been very solid so far

Where are you going coming up with Posh had a tough night?

He was guarding their best scorer all game and was shutting him down in the 2nd half. Did you not see that game winning defensive stand he made, where he forced Dunn to turn the ball over. He finished with 6 points, 6 rebounds, 6 assist, and 2 steals, with only 1 turnover. That's a pretty good game from your PG. Posh doesn't need to score 15 or 20 points to be effective.
This- Defense so often gets lost when analyzing one's play - doesnt always register in the stat sheet - steals/blocks yes.... but causing havoc, pressuring a player out of their comfort zone etc... Posh excels at that.

I noted after the Nebraska game that Posh has disappointed in my eyes vs expectations I had for him- but that had to do mainly with the scoring I thought he was going to doing. 2/9 last night, didnt attempt a 3. I hope he doesn't shut himself down from the 3 pt line like he did later last year... hopefully he can hit a couple in the next coming games so he can have a tiny bit of confidence heading into BE play.

A player like Posh- as tough as he looked on the offensive side of the ball, I trust he'll put in the work to right the ship- and those close shots will start to fall

If you have espnU as part of your cable package you can watch the replay on the ESPN app.

Highlights

Some quick thoughts/observations:

1. Joel Soriano is no longer just a serviceable big man. He's become one of our most important players. Credit to this young man for really putting in the work this past offseason and completely buying in.
2. I Really like O'Mar Stanley. He's a Bill Belichick type of player, in that he just "does his job." He doesn't try to do too much and knows his role.
3. Storr needs more minutes.
4. Mathis looks like a completely different player this year. He's only committed three turnovers this year, and his shot quality and stroke seem to have really improved.
5. David Jones is a good all-around player.
6. Not worried about Posh - yet.
7. Curbelo is maddening to watch. The guy was a liability for 39 minutes last night. Yes, he won us the game at the end, so I give him credit for putting the first 39 minutes behind him and having enough confidence in himself to get us over the hump. But the turnovers have to decrease and the shot quality has to increase.

BEAT CUSE.

I was not a fan of Mathis last year. His play on the half court offensive end was very poor. His transition offense was good. This year through 4 games his half court offensive has been real good and his transition offense has been outstanding!!!! No drop off in defense if anything he is ven better!!!! Good for him and the staff.

Rarely has the ball in his hands if he’s not finishing or making a quick swing pass. Much harder to defend than when he has the ball on the perimeter for more than a second or 2 and defense can wall up and take away middle. Nothing has surprised me more than his play to date. And yes, he did come out of the gates last year playing well but I still think this is a whole different level and approach. Here’s to hoping it sticks for the whole year and one rough shooting game doesn’t send the fan base back down his throat.

- This is a good win for us, Temple has beaten Rutgers and Villanova
- Joel is a beast! Much credit to him for working hard in the offseason. One play that stood out was the high post jumper he hit. If he can hit that consistently other teams are in BIG trouble.
- Mathis is the quiet hero of the night, impressed with his aggressive play on both ends of the floor. One thing that stood out to me from last year is his composure, last year on offense, his offensive fouls were VERY predictable.
- Stoor needs more minutes ASAP, will be interesting to see where Pizon gets minutes if healthy.
- Hot take, but CMA needs to live with Belo's crazy play and David Jone's pullup heat checks. Those plays are contagious and IMO spark periods of momentum that we lacked last year.
- This team genuinely loves to play together. Players on the bench cheering, coaching, and communicating with each other is a great testament to the family culture we use as our recruiting tool. Impressed with Traore, he hasn't been able to get on the floor much, but he is always up cheering and supporting the team in-game and during timeouts.

O'Mar Stanley - I hope he is on the trajectory I thought Josh Roberts was on. Glue guy. Just does what is needed. Love it.

He made one mistake last night. And it was because he was over confident and being aggressive on the charge. Much easier to take than him making mistakes due to tentativeness.

wasn’t able to see the game but it sounds like we gutted out a tough one. Happy for the win. Let’s go get Cuse tonight!!!!

This is the weirdest STJ thread of all time.
I have to agree. This is what I got from this thread having not watched the game:

So much for the much improved Soriano! Soriano is the Big East most improved player. We need Soriano back on the floor.

Curbelo is horrible, take him out, he is killing us (or words to that effect repeated many times) Big time plays down the stretch, kid has onions.

Take Stanley out, why is he in there? Stanley is giving us good minutes. Stanley is playing well.

I know we are a good team when Mathis is not starting. Mathis is playing very well. Clutch free throws by Mathis. Mathis is our most consistent player (okay that’s one I’d never would have thought would be said or typed). Mathis played a great game.

Game ball belongs to Soriano and Mathis.
