Ellison and Williams

Been trying to figure out who was leaving since it's been hinted there will be three new guys coming. Didn't suspect these guys at all -- thought it would be Yakwe, Alibegovic, and Mussini going home.

Ellison leaving means the writing was on the wall about Simon getting lots of minutes at the 1, 2, and 3.

And starting to think I won't need to change my avatar.

It's been raised before, but wondering how this sits with dad Purvis, who has ties to some good NJ talent. Just thinking out loud.
With all the PT the staff gave
Malik doubt the staff had a hand in him leaving. More likely a move by Ellison so hopefully no hard feelings on anyone's part.

Transfer probably sits better with dad than son being buried on bench for rest of career. Plus, Ellison here didn't seem to have any influence one way or the other regarding Jersey kids headed our way.

On a side note, would like to see Ellison resurface in the Colonial. Seems like a good level for him.

Just a few years ago losing two players who would be counted on to contribute even as back ups next season would be a problem. With the current immediate transfer rules this might not turn out to be so bad.

Surprised Williams is transferring, expected him to have role next year. Ellison, less surprised. Minutes crunch/roster attrition #SJUBB

Former #Arizona recruit Justin Simon sure to grab 20+ minutes after sitting out following transfer from 'Cats. Would have started this year.

Maybe I am being "pie in the sky" but I strongly believe Simon & Clark will help fill the leadership vacuum on this team. They seem like very mature, positive guys.

Having Matt here is great for my March and April. For too long this time of year has been mostly dead as a St. John's fan, but it's very exciting now to see what kind of rabbits he can pull out of his hat.

I'm going to miss Williams

Best of luck to both of them

You could see glimpses of what he was, but i think injuries just killed his body. Would like to see him go low major where he can still do stuff that he couldn't pull off against Big east players.

Disappointed when any kid leaves. I would rather 4 year players but I am a dinosaur. A few thoughts:

1- I hope this means Marcus Lovett is staying. I think that would be major positive for both sides.
2- We will miss Williams more than Malik. Before the season I asked guys on this board if Williams could "help" us this season. I had no idea since he was invisible to me the prior year. Well I would love to bring up the responses that gave him no chance to help at all. However, when he got a chance (hey he wasn't Ty Grant) but he gave us a solid contribution. Compared to Sima he was breath of fresh air. I thought he hustled and that said a lot about him. Again disappointed he left but I do appreciate his effort for us.
3- I was not a fan of Malik Ellison's game. I will give him credit for improving over year one. I do think he is a kid who could get better in years 3 and 4. I wish him luck.
4- Now for the real issue. What does this mean for next year assuming ML is staying? Will we fill with grad transfers? regular transfers? I know others seem convinced we will get another big guy for next season. I'll keep my fingers and everything else crossed. Depending on who we get we might have the makings of a nice team.

Your right. But don't want to see players leave, want to see players come. Next month should be interesting. Cant wait to read about a grad transfer, quality big coming.

When I spoke with Matt this season, he absolutely gushed as to how much he likes Williams and was happy that he has made it back from something in the order of 6 surgeries. I presume they are very close, and I hope that the transfer is more of a sign of a chance to play more elsewhere, although his durability may be suspect. Still, even in a limited role, he would have had value as a 10 minute per game guy.

Ellison's improvement actually surprised me this year, but he needs a more refined game at this level to have value to a Big East type of program. Hope he finds the right level for himself to get the minutes he wants.

Probably not a HS rabbit though ;)

The best scenario for SJU basketball re the transfers is that after playing with Simon and Cark this past season Ellison and Williams realize that minutes will be hard to come by because of the talents of the two.
You don't like to see players opt out of the program but if Mullin intends to move into the top tier of the Big East he will not do it will Ellison and Williams playing major minutes. This is one of the tough decisions a coach has to make.

I didn't know Williams actually has his college degree. Good for him.

The Press Release indicated that he will pursue transfer options after he gets his degree. I think he's on track to graduate this Spring.

A big thanks to both of these guys, for their willingness to come here, when the cupboard was bare.

When Mullin and staff finish turning this thing around, those two should be remembered as two of the building blocks, IMO.

I had it in my head that Yakwe would be the first to transfer. Do those in the know sense whether that is a possibility? Put another way, donothers sense any other potential defections on the horizon?
In the know? No one posted recently anything about Williams or Ellison transferring.

Good point. Sometimes I think those that are truly in the know have the good judgment not to disclose these things before they become public.

That's why I am so glad I'm not in the know, that way I can just keep posting crap indiscriminately.

3 thoughts immediately popped into my head.

1. Lovett is returning.
2. Simon and Clark must be the real deal.
3. We've got reinforcements coming to the frontcourt.

Shame about both of them. I thought they had places on next year's team. Williams especially.

Is Ellison for real? Transferring because of playing time. He got more then he deserved as far I was concerned. As far as Williams leaving I am really disappointed, actually felt he deserved more playing time. A good fill in for our foul trodden biggies.

Listen, just because he's transferring due to playing time doesn't mean he felt he deserved more this year or next on STJ. Maybe he realized he could get more by stepping down a level and decided that's what he wanted to do.

Good luck to both.
Williams would have played a similar role next year off the bench so he obviously wants a chance to play more. He has talent and, if healthy, will play somewhere.
I was never a fan of Ellison and think he is better off at a lower level. Had very little court sense and was always just as likely to hurt his team as to help.
This is where Matt earns his paycheck. Let's hope he delivers.
