Dunlap to Charlotte

The NY Post article says: "He becomes the first NBA head coach that jumps from being an NCAA assistant who has no prior Division I head-coaching experience."

It is unprecedented.

But how many people ultimately want that job right now?

Regardless, it is still a huge accomplishment for Dunlap. He's willing to take that on, Good for him. Hopefully they give him enough time to grow with the program. As far as SJU goes, this plays extremely well in Lavin's favor overall. People taking notice at Lavin's eye for coaching and on-court talent like Dunlap and Harkless.

Congrats to Coach Dunlap! You certainly deserve the opportunity. It won't be easy though.

I'm sure that Lavin put a list together weeks ago for potential X's/O's type Associate Head Coach replacements when Dunlap was first rumored for the job. He'll find the right replacement. I like the idea of replacing Dunlap with another X's & O's guy with NBA ties. Those NBA connections seemed to be a very valuable attribute of our staff with this year's recruits and would prove beneficial moving forward.

I like the Phil Weber idea.

That's a great stat. Does anybody know when the last time a college assistant jumped straight to NBA head coach, period?

Two sides to this coin, as many have already stated. Dunlap is one of the most impressive game tacticians I've ever watched consistently. What he had the 10/11 team doing by mid-January (especially defensively) was incredible. This should not be underestimated. However tremendous exposure for the program, coupled with Mo's likely first round/possible lottery selection, a lot of positive buzz around our program at a quiet time for college hoops generally. I'm sure our head coach who doubles as a PR specialist will find ways over the next few weeks to parlay this into some terrific media coverage.

Congrats to Coah Dunlap! I guess we know who wont be drafting Nuri  ...

Lavin will make a great hire. He has supreme confidence in himself which translates into builidng the best possible staff, thats how we ended up with Dunlap.

I don't recall Lavin being a heavy martchup zone guy at UCLA. Does this change our philosophy? Now that we have the personnel to play man will we see a change? Interesting turn of events

He already has. Almost any article that you read on the Dunlap hire, inclues a quote from Lavin that ends with a comment about the progress the program has made over the last 27 months. Lavin will keep inserting similar statements any time he is intereviewed regarding the Dunlap hire. Great exposure.

Dunlap is a Loss, there is no doubt about that. But Lavin will spin this to our advantage and hopefully the new hire will admirably fill Coach Dunlap's shoes on the staff.

there was a pretty decent lineup of people who interviewed for that job. they wanted it.

This is great for Coach Dunlap and St John's. I am just curious if Dunlap will talk to Jordan about Harkless. It would be an easier transition if Harkless did go to the Bobcats, being under the same coach he had in most of his college season. I can't wait to see where Harkless goes in the draft and what Dunlap will do with the Bobcats.

For anybody who doubts Dunlap as being able or ready for this job. I think Michael Jordan knows a good coach when he sees one. I hope for the best for Dunlap next year.

I wouldnt be using Jordan's resume as an owner and personal evaluator to praise Dunlap. If anything it does the opposite.

Do Phil Jackson or Jerry Sloan want the job? Probably not. Does Mike D'antoni? eh, still probably not.
But lets not kid ourselves; nba head coaches make at least a million each, no? If not, I'm sure it's close. There are plenty of assistants and college head coaches that would take that pay raise. And the higher profile that comes with it.
If nothing else; Dunlap does this for 3 years - the Bobcats still stink, he gets fired, and he takes a job as a college head coach somewhere. This is nothing but good for Dunlap's career.

& nothing good comes out of it for St.John's. They lose the brains behind the scenes of the x & o guy. I'm happy for him , happy for St.John's getting press of it for recruiting but who truly can help what Dunlap has done in 27 months here ?

Nothing good comes out of it for St. John's? Really?

They now have a direct pipeline to the NBA. Do you think a guy like Dwight Hardy isn't smiling today? Knowing that his chances of getting on an NBA Summer League team (probably the Bobcats) has shot up substantially?

You don't think NCAA head coaches around the country are shaking in their boots right now hoping that Lavin doesn't start ringing their phones wanting to interview their assistants? A guy like Norm Roberts (sorry board) just went from Florida to Kansas.

Dunlap was getting a job somewhere and was gone from SJU probably at the end of this year anyway. He is that good and has the resume' to prove it. To even be called for an NBA head coaching job interview is amazing.

ESPN Insider has an article up mentioning possible candidates to fill Dunlap's role.
They quote Dave from JJ extensively as their source.
These are the names they propose:

Jim Boylen - former Utah HC
Brett Gunning - Villanova assistant
Jim Obrein - BC, Ohio State
Justin Hutson - assistant at UNLV and formerly at SDSU

They also say Cluess is also a rumor that's out there, but an unlikely one.

Agreed it's Great for St.John's & Dunlap . Not to mention I agree that he was leaving most likely by next year anyway . Why because he is so Smart. What I'm worried about is ..... who taking his place ? That's what i was worried about . I trust Lavin ,Tony & Rico and of course Gene (HOF) but ........ who is Lavin going to get or is he going to have time too get someone in time ?

I would think that Mark Jackson has a lot less coaching experience than Dunlap.
Good luck coach. You will be missed.

Congratulations coach, job well done and good luck. You stepped in to a tough situation last year and did a great job with a under sized, under manpower team that still gave us moments and glimpses of a bright future.

I wish and pray for nothing but the best for you and your family.

Coach you deserve your new position as Head Coach of the Charlotte Bobcats. You did a wonderful job for the Johnnies, sometimes under very trying conditions. You will be missed but never forgotten. God Bless you in your new challenge. All of the St. John's family will be pulling for you.
