Dunlap to Charlotte

jon rothstein: Sources say Pacers assistant Jim Boylen is a strong candidate to replace Mike Dunlap on Steve Lavin's staff at St. John's....

a little nutty but has a good resume and will compliment lavin i believe.

, I will be rooting for the Bobcats next year!

Not sure I'm willing to go that far.

PS looking at your avatar reminded me that last week on the way to work I heard "I Do The Rock" for the first time in like 20 years. LOL

If you like college basketball, then it's easy to root for the university of Charlotte bobcats

Funny but Gman will not have any of us picking the the Bobcats over the 49ers of his alma mater.

Charlotte may be better than the Bobcats!

I posted two topics that have been removed from the board by someone . so lets try this topic Who is out there that might want to be in Lavinwood ??????

It is goingto be Boylen.

So sad to see Dunlap go. I wish him the best of luck.

Boylen looks to have a phenomenal resume'. He seems like a guy that would fit seemlessly in here as the associate HC taking Dunlap's spot. Tons of NBA ties and experience, is known as a great tactician and defensive/big man coach. It doesn't seem we'd lose a step on the road to where we're headed and Lavin can tout Boylen's extensive NBA ties and connections and the overall staff.

I'm not familiar with Abatamarco or Odom. I'll check out their bio's. I know Madkins has some experience as an assistant and a scout. I know Biancardi was a head coach and assistant in the collegiate ranks, but I can't get him now being a recruiting analyst out of my head.

Abatamarco was apparently an assistant under Louie in the 70's for a shirt time. Odom a young guy and more of a recruiter. Of the mentioned, I think I like Biancardi the best, but Boylen better than all. No doubt we'll continue to hear a plethora of new names come up as "in the mix" in coming weeks.

Lane Odom-http://www.mutigers.com/sports/m-baskbl/mtt/odom_lane00.html

Earl Watson- This one doesn't make sense to me. Played for Lavin at UCLA and was on the Jazz last year. Only 33 so I assume he could still play

Gerald Madkins-http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gerald_Madkins

Paul Biancardi- Has been a head coach at Wright State and assistant at St. Louis, BC and Ohio State, is ESPN.com's director of basketball recruiting.

So very sad to see Coach Dunlap leave but with Steve Lavin as our head coach no player or coach is bigger than the program.

Many excellent candidates being mentioned for the position and I have no fear that  Coach Lavin will bring in an excellent replacement.

Dunlap is the new coach for the Charlotte Bobcats.

C'MON MAN!!!... SMH. This is not a good look. Hopefully this does'nt effect our recruiting. You better believe that Dunlap was a very important part of our recruiting success over the past two years because of his college and pro experience. I know Dunlap has been taking a few nibbles at other coaching options since he got to St. John's. Hopefully Lavin has been planning for this and we have another "attractive" coach with pro experience and amateur "connections" lined up to fill the void now left by Dunlap..... #somewhat concerned.

Do you really believe this is gonna affect our recruiting? Of course, Dunlap's expertise wasn't going unnoticed when Lavin was recruiting. But, Lavin can certainly hold his own when it comes to recruiting. There aren't too many coaches who can recruit like Lavin. Lavin's track record of sending players to the NBA under his watch also goes a long way in recruiting.

Lavin also has Rico Hines at his disposal while recruiting, as well. He has NBA coaching ties. Did you also forget about a guy named Gene Keady?

I like Dunlap, as he is a solid X's and O's guy, and he and Lavin complimented one another well. I truly do not believe this will have any affect on our recruiting.

Lavin is of course the mastermind... he is the figurehead/hood ornament of a much bigger machine that he has created. Its always mentioned on here that Lav has put this coaching staff together because the coaches today r just as much a contributor to successful recruiting as anything else. Kids want coaches w pro experience that can prep them for the NBA. So when Lav is sitting the living room of a top recruit and talking about his coaching staff who else with the exception of Gene Keady has the body of work and experience that Dunlap has? The recruits know it as u can see by our recent recruiting success... The Bobcats damn well knew it too. Im not upset, just a little concerned. My point is u dont replace a guy like Dunlap, even w the current guys on the staff. U just lost a very important cog in Lavin's machine, a major selling point. I wish Dunlap well in the pros but we will b hard pressed to replace him or find someone w as impressive a resume. I know Lavin is capable though and I hope we can do it.

Once again, Lavin can go back to his personal resume' of sending kids to the NBA under his watch. Dunlap was certainly an integral part of our schemes, and Lavin more than likely brought up his name when recruiting. OTOH, do not think for a second that Lavin isn't the straw that stirs the drink. Kids are ultimately coming to play for Lavin. The staff is the icing on the cake, per se'.

You're also forgetting Keady and Hines when it comes to selling the program. Keady's collegiate resume' speaks volumes. He also did a stint in the NBA, as an assistant. Do not forget about Hines who is known for player development. There is a reason some of the NBA guys continue to work out with him during the offseason. Dunlap will be missed, but I'm sure Lavin will be able to find a comparable replacement.

Assistant coaches leave schools all the time. We'll be fine, as the main cog (Lavin) and the remainder of the staff is still in tact. Not to mention, I also feel confident that Lavin will make a sound hire. Lavin is already using this situation as positive PR (as, I thought he would). Dunlap receiving an NBA gig will essentially work in our favor.

I feel good times are ahead for us.

I hope it isn't "Slice." He's more known for his recruiting, and quite frankly we're covered pretty darn well in that department, in Lavin and Chiles.

Everything I've read sounds like Boylen is the perfect fit. He can't be happy as the Pacers Big man coach, even though he's one of the NBA's gurus on development of post players(big selling point for Lavin). A guy with his resume' should jump at the chance as an Associate HC in NY, especially after Dunlap landed an NBA gig. Just take one look at Boylen's resume' and he seems tailor-made to replace Dunlap. Defensive tactician, "post-spacing genius" he was called, and obsessive at game prep. His roots under Izzo, over a decade in the NBA and even a D1 head coaching stint. Thus far haven't seen any candidates that appear better but that is of course for Lavin to decide. A guy like Boylen allows us to continue selling the expertise that we have been selling with Dunlap on board.

The Associate Head Coach recruiting season has begun. It certainly will be interesting. My vote at face value at this point goes to Boylen.

I'm imagining what Boylen could do with a raw talent like Obekpa.

Turn him into a monster at both ends.

Slice is such a great recruiter and a combination of Slice and Lavin, IMO, would raise us to  a new level, an elite level.

We might, or might not suffer in the x's and o's category but I think we would more than make up for it in the quality of talent we get here.

It's not the x's and o's it's the Jimmy's and the Joe's.

Get the marquee players here and we are off and running to premier basketball.

Lavin, Chiles Keady and company are not exactly stupid when it comes to strategy. Chiles is an Ivy leaguer and a past high school valedictorian. Keady created a dynasty at Purdue.

We already know that Lavin and Slice have a good rapport with each other. Lavin was bending over backwards to try and sign Slice when Lavin took over.

Mike Dunlap was a big loss and I wish him well, but I really believe that a trade up in recruiting will do blockbuster things for us.

I'm putting my money on Slice unless Pitt gets him first !
