Dunlap to Charlotte

I hope it isn't "Slice." He's more known for his recruiting, and quite frankly we're covered pretty darn well in that department, in Lavin and Chiles.

I agree completely and I also ask the question if Slice is such a great recruiter what happened at Manhattan?j

Slice is such a great recruiter and a combination of Slice and Lavin, IMO, would raise us to  a new level, an elite level.

We might, or might not suffer in the x's and o's category but I think we would more than make up for it in the quality of talent we get here.

It's not the x's and o's it's the Jimmy's and the Joe's.

Get the marquee players here and we are off and running to premier basketball.

Lavin, Chiles Keady and company are not exactly stupid when it comes to strategy. Chiles is an Ivy leaguer and a past high school valedictorian. Keady created a dynasty at Purdue.

We already know that Lavin and Slice have a good rapport with each other. Lavin was bending over backwards to try and sign Slice when Lavin took over.

Mike Dunlap was a big loss and I wish him well, but I really believe that a trade up in recruiting will do blockbuster things for us.

I'm putting my money on Slice unless Pitt gets him first !

I think we had this conversation when Lavin was hired and assembling his staff. It seemed you wanted a staff full of recruiters. I'm pretty sure it was you.

IMO, unless, "Slice" has reincarnated himself to be Calipari then it's somewhat overkill to bring him in. Lavin, Chiles and even Hines are more than enough from a recruiting standpoint. Those guys can and have gotten us "Jimmy's and Joe's."

I'm also pretty certain Lavin, Chiles and Keady aren't clueless when it comes to strategy. Lavin and Keady wouldn't have amassed their records by being buffoons. I just believe a guy like Boylen seems to bring more to the table from an overall standpoint versus Rohrssen. Not to mention, I'm sure he and Lavin has some ties as both were assistant coaches in the Big Ten (Lavin at Purdue and Boylen at Michigan State) during the late 80's and early 90's.

I'm sure Lavin will do his due diligence when it comes to this next hire. But, I'm very intrigued by Boylen.

Nice remembering. It was and still is me. You may not agree with me but ,at least, I'm consistent here.

Tough discussion. It all comes down to quantifying the merits of the candidates. Tough to do.

The good thing is that Lavin will have a choice of highly qualified candidates

In my mind's eye I keep thinking that recruiting is king--Calipari, Driessel, Pittino, Dale Brown, Frank McGuire, Looie,

I kind of think that Lavin + Slice could compete witth Calipari..

Despite recruiting for Manht, he was able to recruit a strong class.

Recruiting for St John's and with a guy like Lavin at the helm, will make Slice that much more potent.

The program at Manh't broke down for other reasons. Moose probably remembers but Slice was a potent recruiter there and a devastator for Pitt.

Like a Pacman, he gobbled up all the metro area talent and made Pitt. into a powerhouse..

One other piece of supporting information to this approach is that recruiting won't be as important as player development the next couple of years as a direct result of the two mammoth classes the last two years. I know things can and likely will change with the chances of early entries and transfers but in the unlikely event they didn't and assuming Darrick qualifies then there is only 1 scholly available for the class of 2013 and 1 for the class of 2014. Even a second opening each year would not put pressure on recruiting like Lav and Chiles (mostly) had on them to reel in the last two classes. I'm pretty sure they could cope without Slice.

100% correct! Lav and Tony have already made the offers to the prime time 2013 and 2014 prospects. Two other important notes: NYC is not the fertile ground it was when Slice was at Pitt. Lavin is a national brand name and that is what recruits will recognize when SJ walks into the kids' parents living room.

there was supposed to be a news conference in charlotte today...

nothing from the team...not even a dunlap is in town announcement.

the bobcats did release a picture of their new logo, however...

what an effed up organization. sorry mj. you need more help than you realize.

I just want to state that Dunlop was terrific, and I wish him well as head coach in the NBA and I think all the st johns people should always cheer for this guy when they hear his name.

Good posts by austour and '72. To expand on what '72 stated.... NYC was where "Slice" was raking in the recruits (which isn't the fertile ground, as you stated). It's not like we're exactly losing the best NYC has to offer. IMO, we've nabbed the best recruits from out of the NYC area in 2011 and 2012, respectively, in Harkless and Obekpa. That particular base is being covered.

I just feel "Slice" would be overkill, and we can find a more suitable replacement for Dunlap.

Slice is a closer. Offers don't necessarily close a deal, usually they don't. There are usually, at least six or seven offers to a quality recruit. Only one of those gets closed. A closer closes a deal. Slice is a closer like Lavin.

I would think that Lavin, especially now, would love to delegate a part of the recruiting to a pro like Slice.

The metropolitan area is still fertile territory. Some articles go so far as to say that Slice,"owns this area.".

Kemba Walker, Dorand Scott, Kevin Jones, Truck Bryant,Levance Fields,James Southerland, Erving Walker,
Angel Nunez, Kyle Mac Alarney to name a few local IMPACT players .

. Wouldn't you have loved to see some of those guys staying home and wearing red and white.!

Don't sell the Met area short. Not when you still have schools like Lincoln, CTK, Mt. Vernon, Jeff. Boys and Girls.

Hoops hot spots like the Bronx, Long Island. Home grown is still powerful stuff .Also, Slice doesn't exactly need a passport to venture into Jersey City, Newark and their environs.

So much can happen in a year that when you think you have one ship, it becomes three, so don't feel that scholarship logistics is working against Slice.

If you have an ace recruiter who says that he can land a player, if the player is an all world, the ship appears like magic was performed. Puff ! No kidding !

Also, we've learned that relationships are formed with kids as long as three or fours years down the road. Slice can perpetuate that for us..

It's not a question of coping without Slice, the true aspiration is to excel with him.

Dare to be great !

If Slice was coaching our team this past year in Lavin's absence I'm not even sure if we'd get 1 win.

I'd like a real coach and it would be awesome if that person had NBA experience

If we're looking for recruiting pedigree in addition to Xs and Os, I wonder if Ernie Ziegler would have any interest in coming back to the Big East? His last year as an assistant, he was in the NCAA title game. His last 4 years as an assistant, he was involved in recruiting/signing 8 future NBA players (Chris Taft and Aaron Gray at Pitt, Trevor Ariza, Jordan Farmar, Arron Afflalo, Darren Collison, Luc Mbah a Moute, and Russell Westbrook at UCLA. Hey - son Trey's only signed a Grant-in-Aid at Pitt, not a binding NLI! :)

And Lavin snatched Harkless away from Jim Calhoun.

For everything Slice may bring from a local standpoint, nationally, it's not even close.

We're trying to nab Top 10 kids, regardless of where they are from.

What speaks for itself is winning. If you win, they will want to come.

Some may not want to admit it, but sometimes it is better for a local kid to actually go away.

Besides, we lost an X's and O's coach, not a recruiter. Are you saying landing a Top 5 class last year and mathematically a Top 20 class this year is lacking on the recruiting front?

We were in the final 3 for the top kid in NJ this year- Kyle Anderson
We lost the top kid in NY this year to UConn- Omar Calhoun
We landed the 2nd best kid in NY this year- Chris Obekpa

Let's start giving the current staff some major props for their efforts, locally and nationally.

Who is this new guy? Is this "Boo Harvey's" alter-ego? Alum98 has been bringing it since he's joined the board.

They would've been in red and white had this current staff were recruiting them. Too bad Dixon ( and "Slice"), Calhoun, Huggins, Boeheim, Pitino, Donovan, Haith, and Brey were going up against Roberts for those kids. Do you honestly believe Lavin would've lost out on all of those kids? Especially, if he was seriously targeting them. Quite frankly, it's irrelevant to bring them up, as far as them wearing red and white when they wasn't even recruited by the current staff. Besides, what does those kids have to do with the players in the area nowadays?

Enlighten us on the overall talent that currently resides in NYC. I do think "Slice" can help us make inroads in New Jersey. But, what happens if he isn't a slam dunk in those parts? The current staff can recruit locally and, most importantly, nationally.

"Lost" as in went elsewhere; did not want to stay home.

If we are looking for New Jersey inroads and have money to spend, we should see if Joe Dooley wants to head east. I'm not thrilled with the idea of Slice at all.

It was probably here that I wrote that I'm not so sure we need an X's and O's guy if the staff absorbed what Dunlap was teaching, but I take that back if Slice is on the menu.

I think I'm in the Boylan camp now, but I can't wait to see other names surface. If anyone can turn a search for a lead assistant into a month of speculation and good press, it's Lavin.

If Slice was coaching our team this past year in Lavin's absence I'm not even sure if we'd get 1 win.

The head of the nail couldn't have been hit any harder than this.
