Dunlap to Charlotte

First off, congrats to coach Dunlap he deserves this. The Bobcats are young and need a coach that will get in their faces and replace old bad habits to rid themselves of their losing mentality. Yes the Bobcats stink right now but like any team are capable of building up their roster these next couple of years if they play their cards right. Also i'm sure coach Lavin knew this day would one day come and has plenty of names in mind to eventually join the staff.

How many guys move from NCAA assistant to NBA head coach? I have to think this is huge for us. A lot of really good coaches will be applying for the job.

Assuming the rest of the staff absorbed Dunlap's knowledge, I'm not entirely sure we need an X's and O's guy -- especially since gurus seem hard to come by. I wouldn't object to bringing in a top recruiter and really crushing the competition with a 1-2 punch from Lavin and Mr. X.

Do we try to lure Book? Too early to bring Matt A. here? Maybe the best juco coach in the nation wants to move up?

I know nothing about Jerry Hobbie except the name, but I remember the name surfacing before Dunlap's did.

There really are a ton of possibilities.

Not knowing what Lavin is thinking " and I have no doubt in my mind he has thought this out a thousand times already " if I were an assistant coach at any program (ex nba or otherwise )or even a head coach at a lower conference program that knowing what Dunlap got paid and knowing that here is a team that won 13 or something games last year and their #1 assistant coach just got an NBA head coaching job if it was me I'd be throwing my hat in the ring tonight to try and join Lavin's staff.

Oh did Leaito screw that one up a couple of years ago

Here's a name for you: PHIL WEBER.

Former assistant under Mike D'Antoni. From NY (Long Island) and still lives in NY. Did a lot of game planning on the Knicks' staff. NBA ties.

congrats 2 coach dunlap....i rem they said this guy was THEE best x's & o's coach around when lav brought him aboard...def surprised at the hire by MJ but ...nevertheless gonna b fun seeing what he does in CHA next yr. rem jordan hired leonard hamilton & ran wit him for a couple yrs in DC.

Congrats to coach Dunlap. Well deserved opportunity.

Sorry to see him go, but certainly another reputation-builder for the program.

 Moe Hicks gets promoted

From DOBO to Associate HC? I think Hicks will stay where he is. Lavin will not just move all his assistants up. He'll want another X's and O's guru as his Associate HC methinks.

I was think slide everyone up a chair.

I don't want to see everybody slide up a chair. Cant lose a guy of Dunlap's quality, move everybody up and then fill from the bottom. It won't look good. Lavin and Chiles are the Batman and Robin of our recruiters. I'd like to see him hire a strong and balanced assistant HC who can help with the coaching and who Lavin has a good relationship with. I don't know who at this point but I trust that Lavin has some idea of what he'll do.

I have a strong suspicion it might end up being Barry Rohrrsen who is available and has a great track record as an assistant and recruiter. He wasn't a great success as HC, but knows his bball. If we're going to hire a "recruiter", then "Slice" is that guy over Book Richardson IMO. I'd probably prefer a big time X's and O's guy but Hines might be able to fill that role now after working under Dunlap the last few years.

Bottom line is that while Dunlap is a big loss, we certainly càn replace him. Lots of programs are winning without Mike Dunlap. Lavin was winning before Dunlap ever came along. Lavin will find the right guy to plug in.

I was thinking, "Slice" while reading about Dunlap.

I see he was out last season but Pitt papers were involved with pumping him up to be an ass't.

He has kept ties with Pitt, going to its games when they came to New York .

As late as a few months ago, he was sitting behind its bench

He is known to be a strong basketball mind and we know he is one heck of a recruiter.

Then, I think that I remember that it was assumed that Hicks, when hired as a DOBO, was next in line to be an ass't.

We were hot for,"Slice," a couple of years ago and I think that Lavin still has a strong relationship with him.

I have a feeling that he gets the job if he wants it.

Wow.. Just caught a glimpse of this on tv and couldnt feel more bittersweet about it. Great for coach Dunlap and yet another sign of the great things we are doing at the program. Still it must be said how shocking this is considering so many mid level college programs passed on him but Jordan decided to give him his first big shot at the helm. Dunlap showed last year that while we already knew he was a great x's and o's coach he could manage personalities and teach discipline on and off the court turning last years group into men and very upstanding ones at that. Very proud of that and glad to see the Bobcats recognized his merits

Coach Steve most capable young man. He will get it done in smooth fashion and be sure to keep us posted. Coach Mike deserving. Steve stay well.

Congratulations to Coach Mike Dunlap on being named the new Head Coach of the Charlotte Bobcats. While I hate to see him go, I realize that this is a goal of his and wish him the best. I also want to thank him for what he has meant to St Johns over the past two years. When he had to step in for Coach Lavin under very adverse conditions this year, he did a remarkable job.

Congratulations Coach Dunlap!
As a season ticket holder, I was very impressed with his abilities as a coach. I wish him the best!
If someone said 27 months ago that we would have two great recruiting classes, would have one great kid play a year and declare pro( a potential top 15 pick at that) and we would have an assistant coach become an NBA head coach, I would have thought you were nuts.
This is the beginning of something big! In Coach Lavin we trust!
Go St Johns!

Hate losing him but congrats to coach Dunlap. He did a great job last year with an short roster. Very deserving of this opportunity.

Got to think Lavin had a plan for this just in case it happened. Curious to see what his move is.

He might go after a similiar type of coach.... A no-nonsense guy who does well with the chalk in his hands. I'm sure we'll probably still use many of the same principles.

Conrats to Dunlap wish him the best Not worried there are a lot of good .x and o guys out there Lavin will get a quality guy

Congrats to you, coach Dunlap. Thanks for all you have done for the redmen. All the best with the Bobcats.

Congratulations, Coach Dunlap. Thanks for all you've done for us here at St. John's. And all the best to you in Charlotte.

Just take it easy when you play the Knicks! ;)

Excellent choice!! I see his family often in Norrthport and he was interviewing for Asst gigs in the NBA as of last week. Quite possible he would take a assistant job with St. John's. Very good X's and O's coach and a really good guy.

Coach Dunlap, thanks for what you did here. Best of luck in the NBA. Keep making good men out of your charges.

Congrats Coach Dunlap. We were very fortunate to have you on the staff at St John's and you more than stepped- up in Coach Lavin's absence.
You showed that you absolutely have what it takes to be a head coach and I am very happy for you that MJ recognized it.
Wish you lots of luck in your new position.
We will never forget what you did for the Redmen.
Once a member of the Redmen, always a member of the Redmen.
I truly believe that your good fortune will be our good fortune as well.
The positive mojo around everything St. John's these days will just keep going and we will bring in a top talent to replace a great teacher and great man.

great news and good luck coach d!! im going to go out on a limb here and say my guess to fill the staff will be......wait for it.......wait for it......Jay Williams!!!

The NY Post article says: "He becomes the first NBA head coach that jumps from being an NCAA assistant who has no prior Division I head-coaching experience."
