Duke Game Thread

Mahoney was also not the worst recruiter.

Unfortunately Felipe and Zendon never met expectations but besides them, he recruited Lavor, James Scott, Tyrone.....and Roshon McLeod who was a very good player but transferred to Duke.

The downfall of Mahoney was that he never recruited a legit BE point guard to replace David Cain. Tarik and Mo Brown were nice kids but they weren't BE players. As soon as Erick Barkley started to run the show we were a top 10 team.

Cain made BH look like a good coach. In fact won him Big East COTY. Once he was gone, BH's coaching deficiencies came to light. Is the James Scott kid playing High School ball in NJ our James Scott's kid? Always liked Scott. Phenomenal athlete and pretty damn good basketball player with potential to be a great basketball player. I could never quite figure out what was stopping him.

Not sure if that's his kid although I know James 'twas from Patterson mj so it's possible. Maybe Paultz knows.
Believe he is.

Thanks Paultz. Can't find to much on him but looks like a 2 star/mid-major kid. Still wish we'd at least be keeping tabs on him. He's a local kid and and a legacy. FWIW Fairfield listed with him. I keep seeing Fairfield in he mix with some of the better mid-major kids. Good for them.
Funny this summer Fairfield's camp drew a ton of kids from Ct & Metro area. Team is struggling, but Johnson is beating the pavement & establishing good relationships with Ct high schools. Cooley did same when coaching there. I live a few minutes from Fairfield, so I hope he turns things around.

Btw, why did Lav stop running that summer elite camp?

Very good question.

Monte Wrote:Yes Cook was an MCAA, but not sure that he was higher ranked than Barklay or Glover. If so, not by much. Both were very highly ranked. Glover was a FF commit but never played for him.

Cook was the sixteenth rated player in his class. Barkley was just slightly lower rated maybe high teens to twenty five coming out of High School but wound up going to prep school in Maine and was considered a top ten recruit by the following year. I think Glover was lower rated. He did not make the McDonald's game if I remember correctly.

Riverside Church was the conduit for much of the talent that came to St. John's back then. Artest, Barkley, Glover and Jessie all played with Elton Brand on that Riverside team. If St. John's had somehow gotten Brand too I believe they would have won it all.

Ernie Lorch ran that Riverside program and was a key component to funneling players towards St.John's. When it came out that Lorch was involved in a sex scandal the Riverside program fell apart and the pipeline was dismantled. Jarvis was not keen on making local connections and ultimately ran the program into the ground. Norm followed and St. John's has never completely recovered.

Don't remember final ranking, but pretty sure Glover was top 20 coming out of Rice. He was also NY State Mr. Basketball.

Pretty close. #23 in the first RSCI Index

Forgot all about Ernest Brown till I looked at that list

That's funny. His name comes up here at least every month or two.

Think I always get confused between him and big Ed Brown. Ernest from St. Rays? Know Ed was from Long Island.

Very big difference but Jakarr was not a "team" player last year and it cost us an NCAA invite and Lavin is paying the price.

We didn't lose five games in a row last January because Sampson wasn't a team player. We lost five in a row because Tesla was picking his starters by throwing darts at a dart board. That's where the bid went.

What you say is true but the flow of the offense suffered while he was auditioning for the NBA. Last year we had too many players and this year too few for the wizard to manage. Chemistry was definitely an issue if I recall. Obekpa was a horror. D'lo and Phil had some terrible shooting games with the embarrassing performance in the NIT the low point where neither could shoot better than 25% and Obekpa played like he did not want to be there. Rysheed did not even suit up because he copped out with a sore throat.

Chemistry may have been an issue but Sampson wasn't the only chemical and he certainly wasn't the chemist. They were 11-3 after the first 5 losses. He played the same minutes the same way in the first 5 losses as he did in the next 11 wins. Scapegoating him is silly and all that addition by subtraction nonsense is just that: nonsense. This team is Sampson away from being dangerous.

Never said Sampson was the only bad chemical and you are correct if you are inferring Lavin was the chemist. Like Harrison and Green last year Jakarr rarely passed up a bad shot last year. You referred to him once as a cancer but to me he was more of a communicable disease that infected the others and Lavin provided no medicine. This team is a doubting Thomas away from being dangerous but that is irrelevant since every game will be an adventure with just 5 and a half D1 players. To put it in Kentucky perspective, our starting 5 would have a tough time cracking the second platoon while our bench would not make it as walk ons.

spare me the "junk" analysis

Spare you? I didn't direct any comments at you. I was engaged in a fascinating basketball discussion with several of my peers when you interrupted with one of your all too common personal attacks, for which you have recently been chided by one of the moderators of this site - you do a great job guys! - due to your immoderate intercourse with my boon companion Beast of the East. If you need to be spared from what I write that's a problem of your own making. I don't need to be spared yours: I ignore them because you're a tedious gasbag. I reply here only to ask that you cease your personal attacks and abide by the rules of this site, which forbid the sort of baiting and trolling you have indulged in here. For heaven sake's grow up.

[You referred to him once as a cancer .

Yes, that was sarcasm. Nearly every player who leaves the program becomes some devil we're better off without. I don't recall Sampson auditioning and I don't recall him being particularly selfish. He was option number two on an offensively challenged team that ran a system that doesn't involve sharing of the ball. So he shot. At least when he took them they went in.

I just reduced your Karma for using the word system in describing last year's offense.
There was no order, method or interdependency to Lavin's madness last year. More like "here's the ball kids, now leave me alone".

Coach K has built a great program at an elite school but how can one judge if he is one of the top coaches of all time. On Sunday he beat a team with one top thirty recruit. His lineup had a 1,10,12,17,21,21,and 37 based on my college BB magazines.
Probably 900 of his wins were similar. He is a great recruiter but in college basketball IMO it is very difficult to judge coaching ability. If recruiting is 85 percent of winning as Looie has said we can say he is a top recruiter but a top three coach of all time is very subjective.

How do u rate Calhoun. He created Conn. basketball out of nothing and won multiple titles with players not as highly regarded as many programs. Not a happy thought, but I think his accomplishments the most remarkable of all. Back to back finales by Butler special in the short term.

Joe, I agree that Calhoun made UCONN what it is today. But I never thought he was a good in game tactician. I always thought he was a great recruiter and a great motivator. Plus, it didn't hurt that his assistant coaches were of high quality. Just MHO.

Coach Wooden used to say the same things about his own coaching abilities - that there are likely far better coaches than him who toil with average talent in small gyms all over America.

You make a good point. I think if you filter out in this day and age, nearly all non-conference games, you will have a truer picture of winning percentage against decent competition.

Does anybody know if the game will be replayed on TV anytime soon? I was at the game and forgot to DVR it, and I would like to watch it again.

Notre Dame making a run at Duke after being down 10. Duke missing wide open Threes. Par for the course when teams aren't playing St. John;s

I recorded it on a DVD recorder. If you have a DVD player I can burn you a copy. I will be at the Providence game and you can get it from me there or I can mail it to you if you want. Let me know.

I appreciate the offer, but I won't make you go through that hassle. It's not that important lol

@BlueDevilLair: WOAH. Rasheed Sulaimon has been dismissed from the Duke program. Woah. Just woah.

Noticed he was in Coach K dog house.
