DePaul, Wed. Feb. 17, 8pm, CBS SN (Radio n/a)

What a giant relief that our Big East season won't be an Oh-fer.

This game was more like the Tidy Bowl than the Super Bowl, but a win is a win, As sloppy as the game was losing to DePaul would have made the season so hopelessly worse.

Some takeaways:

1) While we tried our hardest to give back a 20 point lead, Durand drove with nowhere to go, and could have been called for intentional grounding when he tossed a pass cross court out of bounds almost into the stands. I yelled out in disgust, "Nice pass Durand", and was surprised how quiet it was in that moment and how far my voice carried. Irealized that I sounded a lot more like a DePAul fan than an SJU fan.

2) DJ for his part clung to the ball in the closing minutes - he did his part nailing free throws, and I'm sure he was motivated by racking up points, which he did. Sima has expectedly horrific from the FT line down the stretch.

3) Balamou can elevate and make twisting layups that surprise you with his athleticism, but he is dangerous with the ball in his hands - as likely to hoist an ill advised shot as he is to pass it directly to an opponent.

4) Mussini can contribute nothing for long stretches and then get heated up where he pours in points in a hurry, which he did last night. He does get totally unhinged sometimes handling the ball and his drives to the hoop have a very low percentage of resulting in fouls or points - he usually just ends up on his ass. Next season perhaps he will be used like the Knicks used Cazzie Russell way back when. Put him in, if he is instant offense keep him awhile, or yank him after 3-4 minutes.

5) Did Amar do something to deserve being benched nearly the entire 2nd half? Early he put down a vicious put back slam, and then nailed a 3. I thought he was playing fairly well.

6) Yakwe caught and slammed one of the most impressive alley oops I've seen this season. He looked like a wide receiver rising out of a sea of defenders, and simply out jumped them and kept his focus to throw it down. He and Sima looked like the Reject Brothers. HAve to check the box score, but they appeared to block at least 8-9 shots between them.

7) My wife is 2-1 this season attending games, (Syracuse win) with the only loss being Villanova (she is partial to Jay Wright). I should have let her think we were having a good year. I swear at one point when one of our guys made a bonehead play that the coaches didn't respond to, she said "Is anyone coaching this team?" I've never prompted her about coaching acumen, and I didn't respond when she said it.

8) Really good crowd for two bad teams.

9) I fell like this was a 1966 Mets vs. Astros game - battle for next to last place. Starting to think we can sweep these guys.

10) Mullin using a 10 man rotation. Kind of nice. We don't lose much going that deep.

We now own a winning streak that is better than that of 50% of the teams in the Big East.

That, my friends, is how you put a positive spin on things.

Sorry, you'll have to attend my lecture on the breakdown of the game. There will be a quiz but I won't grade them.

Is the lecture shorter than the post? If so, count me in. :)

If I had a vote it would go to Johnson for team MVP
1. Johnson
2. No one
3. Yakwe

No doubt he played well. I can understand not being a fan of his game but attacking his character is not - what's the word that gets bandied about here so often, oh yeah, classy. Attacking the young man's character is not classy. I certainly haven't heard any of his peers or the staff say that he was anything other than an exemplary team mate. Not to mention once again bringing up my poor father dead lo these many years at at such a young age leaving poor mater a widow to raise four children and one of them me.

I think combination of rust and trying to do to much.
Can be annoying but he is clearly the best offensive player on the team

Glad for the boys and the staff that they ended this losing streak and can move forward, really happy to read that there was a good crowd. Since the game wasn't included in my cable package in Indy, and I had a hook up, I went back to IU for their win last night. A few people approached me at dinner and at the game because of my St. John's jacket to chat about Mullin and the team. Despite being shocked by the losing streak, they were very supportive just because of Mullin. Here in Hoosier Country Mullin is a wildly respected and liked person. I hope it translates in the recruitment trail, and I hope that IU fans stop being nice about Coach once he beats Crean a few times on that front.

Mullin is loved in Indy for a multiple of reasons - he played there, Larry Bird endorsed him as "the guy who most reminds me of me.", and his game is purist and pure Indiana. It's amazing how much Mullin can say to referees without even a warning. It's clear that the referees not only respect, but appear to almost idolize him.

Cam Paultz or anyone else there last night confirm that after the game someone approached OLV72's wife and said " now that we broke the losing streak you need to come to more games " and then apparently she said " not till they get f#cking air conditioning in the upper level " ?

Seems the opposite to me. We stink so not going to get benefit of the doubt but have seen more outrageous calls against us this year then I can remember in years past. Plus has been told to get off table and back into to coaches box a bunch of times.

You obviously missed the Xavier away game.

Staying in the box is a rule, and some but not all refs chase coaches back especially when they wander to the midcourt line or beyond - a ticked off ref can t up a coach for that. But I'm talking about all the jawing Mullin does without the ref getting angry - he often ends his case by patting the ref on the back. I didn't claim that resulted in us getting calls. Bad players rarely get calls, especially when out of control to the hoop. Same goes for small players - they can get knocked to the floor with no call..

And it undoubtedly WILL translate on the recruiting trail. SJU - in large part due to Chris Mullin, Mitch Richmond, the lure of playing for them - is becoming a destination for the best of the best - wouldn't be surprised if Rawle signs - those staying & playing in NYC are beloved, not forgotten - ( Mark Jackson, Mullin...) not the same making your mark elsewhere...
all the best

Agreed

Funny, I was thinking about the box rule for coaches while I was watching the game last night. Nebraska's coach and Crean spent considerable time outside of it, on one play I though Crean was open for a shot he was so far on the floor. Obviously refs are on alert for that recurring behavior after teams complain and Mullin has gotten grief for sitting on the table because of it but not for personal reasons.
And while Coach does have Pacers history and Bird's endorsement, Indiana is very much an amateur sports state with a long memory. They love Coach as much for being on Knight's '84 Olympic gold medal team.

Ralph does not post and weatherman nyc was worn down from listening to Ralph tell him 15 times that even the johnnies could not blow that lead.

He was right.

What a relief to get the win. I feel that I can hold my head up high today. Too bad that we had to get it aginst our sister school.
