@DePaul, Tue., Feb. 14, 9p, FS-1

One of the ugliest Division I basketball games I have ever seen. Here are a few Lupica-Style comments......

My son's 5th grade travel team is a more savvy bunch. They're also better coached (if I do say so myself).

Give David Jones credit. He decided he would be tonight's hero. The only problem is that he wasn't the hero even after taking 150 shots trying to be.

Now that it's mid-February, I am glad we have figured out how to defend the perimeter. Otherwise we would still be watching our opponents shoot dozens of wide-open threes......that might get frustrating.

CMA's handling of Omar Stanely is brilliant. Since the season is lost anyway, why play one of our best +/- guys? Keeping him on the bench will dissuade other teams from luring him into the portal. This is an awesome strategy.

Lastly, I think DePaul needs Rick Pitino as bad as we do.
Omar transfers to Duke and McLeods us

Regardless of outcome, let's hope Shanley & Cragg are watching entire game from home

Do you really believe that Shanley and Cragg will see this game for what it is, two poorly coached teams putting on a display of horrific basketball? I have no faith in either to do the right thing and believe that they will view this as a good win for St John’s cause neither wants to go the “buyout” route and prefer to keep Anderson regardless of the programs lack of success.

It’s quite clear that Cragg has more to lose should Anderson be let go ( see the idiotic extended contract) from an opticks standpoint so he will spin it however he can to prevent that from happening.

I’m not convinced as are some that Anderson being let go is a done deal. A few more wins and regardless of whether they make any tourney or not it will be spun that the team stayed together through injuries and finished string. Listen closely to the rhetoric coming out of Cragg’s mouth over the next few weeks and you decide.

If you stayed up and watched that entire game… 9pm tip AND 2OT… you deserve a badge or something

I knocked at halftime.

Good for the kids touching out a win. Should be 3 in a row cause they never should’ve lost the butler game but whatever

It is so frustrating that this team should actually be 8-8 now in conference if not better, and the talent level is probably there to be that, but the losses that should have been wins, caused by poor shot selection, porous defense, double digit leads relinquished, double digit runs allowed, lack of offensive sets and coherence, poor coaching, substitutions, clock management, hero ball, poor minute distribution, dumb and undisciplined plays, etc. can't be changed. Despite ALL those issues, we are a hairline away form 8-8 or better and still having hope for the season. It seems that StJ's constant for years now is that we underperform our talent level, and that is primarily on coaching. Truly frustrating.

I hear you. Also gotta remember though, really could’ve easily lost that game against Georgetown. Which would’ve been a terrible loss

So it all kinda evens out. In the end you are what your record says you are

Wusu with the Valentines gift to Larry Wright
I have seen fire and I have seen rain.
I have seen Chris Mullin, Malik Sealy and Ron Artest play poorly.
I have seen Geno and Aaron Spears play well.
I have seen Wusu make layups, Phil
Greene dribble North to South instead of in a circle and I think I once saw Chris Mullin awake in a huddle.
Heck I have seen a Norm Roberts team win a game, Avery Patterson hit 8 threes and I think once I have seen a Boo Harvey post I agree with.
No one is good or bad all the time.
The only exception was Walter Berry who never played poorly his entire time here.
Wusu did play great.

With this win and the schedule ahead it is looking more and more like SJU will be locked into the 8/9 seed/game on Wednesday of the BET. You have the 5 ranked teams and then VIllanova and SHU ahead of them and they are not catching any of them. Which puts you at 8. DePaul and Georgetown are likely to finish 10 and 11. So looking like Butler/SJU in the 8/9 game Wednesday just will depend on who gets the 8 and who gets the 9.

You can lose if you foul. If you don’t, then OT is the worst case. That’s the argument. To say there is none is silly.
Lose? How? Make the first free throw(50/50, at best for any Johnnie in that spot) then miss the second, get the rebound, THEN get the ball back out for a three....in about 2 seconds? Better chance of winning the powerball.

1. I foul under 5 second up 3.

2. But there is definitely an argument not to do it. And it’s what I just laid out. You wanna act like it’s unfathomable for a team to get a rebound and a 3 on their own side of the court then go ahead.

Lots of things we didn't do well last night but two we did were rebound (especially in 2nd half) and hit our free throws (which always makes me smile). 25 offensive rebounds including 6 each by Soriano and Jones and 81% from the line where we outscored Depaul by 9 points, the winning margin. Glad I suffered through the late night to see Wusu heroics.

You can also foul a three point shooter who makes the shot and wins it at the line.

Yes, and especially stay out of the 6/11 game since that feeds into the late slot the following days. I think 8/9 is the first game on Wednesday and the early ones thereafter.
