Darrick Wood, SG

Yeah Rivals seems to give him the most props so far (3 stars, #25 SG) while he's not even on Telep & crew's radar (2 stars, #50 SG)

From the Zags Article posted earlier: 'The month of July convinced Division 1 coaches that Darrick Wood was a high-major player.'

I don't think the scouts are even close to having this 2012 class "pegged" yet. I believe the '12 rankings for all the sites are going to change a lot by next spring (more than usual) & I don't think this young man has finished "blowing up" on the scene yet...July was just the beginning for DW he's a baller and being associated with Lavs now has gotta bump him up a star & 15-20 spots at ESPN!

Bigger, Better, Stronger, Faster..............SJU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This kid has huge nuggets for coming here with all the talent in front of him, and that's the type of kid I want on my team.

I'm not sure what the staff sales pitch is, but after only one season here, they can legitimately tell kids that if they want to win a national championship, St. John's is one of a handful of schools that can realistically get them there in a few years.

Feels like a move to really get Anderson IMO.

Darrick looks like a player. I think it's a good thing especially if he is coming in as a role player. In the past we could only dream about getting role players like this.

Disagree about the move to get Anderson and concur with Still Happy who can only be getting happier each day.
This kid is a player in his own right and IMHO we need another pure shooter after Deangelo, who is just incredible, on the team far more than another forward. We are loaded at forward and Darrick brings a skill you can never have enough of. He is from across the river in Newark, and from a traditionally strong AAU program. He has excellent height and if he can gain 20 pounds in working out with our strength coach, who is just top notch, the sky is the limit for this kid.
My greatest concern is Lavin allocating pt for all of our talented players and Darrick seems prepared to wait a little prior to getting substantial minutes which only increases the commitment.
Welcome aboard Darrick and another great job by Tony Chiles on the recruiting front.

A win for us and a bigger loss for Seton Hall. Not only are they losing a good player that a rival team picked up but they also loose a possible connection to Kyle Anderson. A school like Seton Hall needs all the connections they can get and they just missed one

Their recruiting patterns are really questionable. They take an early verbal from a 2013 JC PF without any offers? What is he, Kobe Bryant? Willard has his hands full and continues to make head-scratching decisions on the recruiting trail. Seton Hall has actually had reasonably good access to a LOT of decent players. They chose to go after other more marginal guys. Hard to feel sorry for them when much of it is self-inflicted. Early recruit a guy from Latvia like Haralds Karlis who can shoot off screens but little else, yet not press for a ranked kid like Darrick Wood? They screwed up the recruitment of Elijah Carter royally. Took Grennan waaaay too early. Grabbed a kid named Johnson out of Cali who won't qualify, and another big guy Hill who didn't qualify. All in all, too many disasters.

Seton Hall could easily have had a class of guys like Elijah Carter, Daniel Dingle, Darrick Wood(possibly), Jermaine Sanders and quite a few others in both the 2011 and 2012 classes that were good and available.

Unfortunately for SHU their recruiting pattern reminds me of ours under Norm, I was always left scratching my head after a commitment and was trying to justify same in my mind.

With the very limited amount of ships we have this season I am thrilled with the two (2) players Lavin has recruited so far. We bring in an absolute bull in the paint for a team that is a little undersized up front, who was arguably the top rebounder this summer on the recruiting circuit and now we get a commitment from a great shooter.
Smart, smart recruiting to fill key needs. The hallmark of a top program.
Lets go Redmen.

SG Wood commits to Storm

St. John's coaching staff spent a bulk of the July live recruiting period following the New Jersey Playaz Club and highly touted point guard Kyle Anderson on the AAU circuit.

The Red Storm were rewarded for their due diligence yesterday -- but not by the 6-foot-9 Anderson, the St. Anthony of Jersey City star ranked fifth in the Class of 2012 by Scout.com. Rather his teammate, shooting guard Darrick Wood, verbally committed to head coach Steve Lavin during an unofficial visit.

Wood picked the Johnnies over Virginia Tech, South Florida, Oklahoma State and USC.

"It feels good, like I'm going to be a part of something special. I love their playing style and the location," the 6-foot-4 rising senior, who raised his stock with a big summer, told The Post. "The [coaching staff] changed the whole program around."

Wood joins power forward Ricardo Gathers in St. John's 2012 recruiting class,

"A couple of years ago I wouldn't think of St. John's," Wood said. "Coach Lavin and all of them came in and made a big difference very fast."

Wood, who is from the D.C. area but attended NIA Prep in Newark last year, said he has talked to Anderson about joining him in Queens and thinks he would be a perfect fit.

Anderson plans to commit somewhere around Sept. 20, his 18th birthday, and has narrowed down his list to St. John's, Georgetown, UCLA, Florida and Seton Hall.

"They're doing a good job," Anderson said of St. John's previously. "I know they are interested, and I'm interested, too."

Not really sure I agree with you as there are not a whole lot of players ahead of him at the SG Position.
When Darrick sets foot on campus Nuri will be a junior and DeAngelo a sophomore. If you have seen DeAngelo play, work out and his commitment to getting better you will agree with me that we will be lucky to get three seasons out of this kid. If heaven forbid there is an injury to either player Darrick gets serious minutes right away. Kid is going into a very good situation.

RMN don't forget Phil Greene (and Malik). Either way, I agree you can't have too many scorers on the bench. I have a feeling Nuri and/or Deangelo won't be here for their allotted time.

Agreed but Stith is a point and PG is also more of a lead guard.
Stith will be a senior when DW steps on campus so he wont be much of a factor.
As I mentioned earlier DH will not be on campus for 4 seasons.

True Aubie. I was thinking of it more in terms of schollies given to back court players.

Unfortunately for SHU their recruiting pattern reminds me of ours under Norm, I was always left scratching my head after a commitment and was trying to justify same in my mind.

I feel bad for the SHU fans. If you go to their board it looks a lot like rm.com of a few years ago. A lot have no hope. And some are delusional thinking they are better then they actually are. They will be the bridesmaid to guys like Wood, Anderson, Dingle, etc. The JUCO signing is weird. The kid was off the grid for about 3 years. Who knows, maybe the kid is the goods like Nuri and just got lost in the shuffle.

I'm not so sure about that. Based on the clips, this kid can cut to the rim and shoot from the outside. If we learned anything after last season, it's the need to have multiple shooters on the roster.

The idea of having multiple shooting options such as Wood, D'Angelo Harrison, Maurice Harkless, Phil Greene, and Nurideen Lindsey is just awesome. And it's important to have plenty of guys who can shoot the rock.

So do I to tell the truth but their admin has made a bunch of bad moves.
Bobby G was a disasterous hire. The writing was on the wall but yet they hired him thinking I don't know what.
I know I wanted him at SJU and voiced my opinion loudly but Father Harrington, who I was certainly critical of, would not even interview the guy. He was correct.
After they let Bobby G go they needed someone with a name but they went small time hoping to find another PJ Carlisimo and maybe Willard will be that guy, but at present they appear to be sinking deeper into obscurity. Rutgers, SJU, SU and ConnU continue to bring in top talent which win or loose will put fans in the seats while SH will start to play before empty arenas.
Even the staffs can't be compared. There just is no punch to the SH staff while opposing schools really have it going, at least on paper.

As for Nuri getting lost in the shuffle, there is certainly truth to that statement, but when Nuri signed with LaSalle a few seasons back he was considered a very good catch for the mid-major. I don't know if the juco they signed was considered a good prospect in high school like Nuri was.

Anyone know anything about him?

6 4 SG, very good shooter, very good defender, very athletic, very light and needs to gain strength which will be no problem with Pat Dixon our excellent strength coach, currently ranked 111 in the class of 2012, had a great month of July, staff saw him repeatedly as he plays AAU with KA and should jump up like crazy in the next rankings.
Would not be surprised to see him finish in the top 75.
Great to get a player from the DC Area.
Just a great pick-up by the staff for 2012.
Is there anything I am missing?

First guy that popped into my head when I saw the tape was Terry Dehere but Woods is bigger and has better hops.

Welcome aboard Darrick!

That is a hell of a comparison SJUFAN2.
Wow is all I can say.
Terry finished his senior year as a top 20 recruit and did great things for the Hall.

Aubie,

I'm not saying he's as good as Dehere, just that physically he reminded me of Dehere (with better hops).

I hope he turns out to be that good...but other than a few minutes of highlights on the internet, I've never seen him play so who knows?

:p We can always use a shooter to go along with Harrison. Wasn't too long ago when we couldn't buy a shooting guard. Got lucky with Hardy.
