Darrick Wood, SG

I am curious on the Verbal Commits site they still list him as a Verbal Commit.
What is his status? I thought he did not have the grades.
Go Red Storm!

He's off to juco next season but I suppose he's technically still committed to us until he says otherwise.

He's out of luck if Harrison decides to leave because we'll look to bring in a guard for 2013-14. If Harrison stays and Wood doesn't do much in juco we'll search for a better option in 2014-15.

On the other side of the coin, if he averages 26 ppg as a soph big programs will come sniffing around, so this will take a while to play out.

If Harrison has a great year and leaves, and Wood has a very good year in Juco, can't he leave there after one year and come to St. John's as long as his grades are up to par?

I don't know if the rules have changed, but I believe both Billy Goodwin and Dennis McIntyre came to STJ after one year of JC.

I think it depends on whether or not you are eligible coming out of HS or graduated or something.

If you go to Juco even though you have good enough grades to play NCAA hoops out of HS you can leave after 1 year and play at an NCAA program. If you do no qualify academically out of HS and go to Juco you have to stay two years. Darrick's situation is the latter so he's there for two years.

He needs to graduate with an associate degree. He technically could have done it in one year if he loaded up on summer classes, but I guess if he was there for grades to begin with that may not have been feasible.

Thanks, Austour!

Good point and as you said the guys who go Juco as non-qualifiers aren't likely to get their associates in 1.5 years with two sets of summer courses.
