D1 Coaching Changes

Big question now becomes whether Xavier AD Greg Christopher elevates assistant Travis Steele or looks outside.
If T. J. Otzelberger gets mentioned, panic. Matt knows him, so it would give him the leverage to either hold us over a barrel for another raise, or take the gig and take all the grad transfers with him.

Heard from someone today that is connected to Xavier that Tommy Amaker is expected to be a candidate FWIW.

Well, that's one less power we need to deal with to move up the standings.

I would be surprised if they hired an outside guy. I'm guessing they go with Travis Steele, their Associate HC.

He picked the right year to split.
They lose a ton.
Worse X team I can remember next year.

At least they're not looking at Mitch.

Not good. Not sure if we had a shot for Aidan Igiehon. Isn’t he Aidan Igiehon’s AAU Coach?

Aidan just joined Rio where Rice coaches. Word is Igie would be a tough get here in any event.

So much for being on a kid since freshman year of HS (Slice was first to visit him), with unlimited playing time under two HOF's, star in NYC under MSG lights etc

Thanks Paultz. Thought odds were poor on Aidan. Just curious.
Mike , be strong in your opinion as you were and it is noted appropriately but, without the icons of attempted humor or discontent . Ok ? Lavin greatly benefited from Norm’s 9 Seniors folly , didn’t he ? It was one of his NCAA teams here . Of which there were only 2 . Who gets credit for the players ? Norm or Steve ? Lavin only recruited well his first year with DLO, Harkless , Sampson, Greene , Pointer , Garrett, . Jordan and Obepka came later . Steve rode that Group for nearly all his time here and exited before the 1 and 17 BE Season that Mullin had to endure because Steve didn’t bring in anyone ! And , despite all the hoops of DLO, Pointer , Branch , etc . They had a terrible record their Freshman year , maybe a Mediocre Soph and Junior year and a first round and out NCAA Senior year . And , you Herald that ? I do give Lavin credit as he was a OK Coach . Not as good as you make him to be though . Mullin has had to rebuild from Lavin ‘s last Recruiting Class and who were they again ? I am not sure you are just Anti Mullin or Pro Steve ? And , I don’t recall such Lavin Loveness when he was here Coaching non chalantly on the sidelines with his smirk and folded arms ? Looking bewildered as he often did by what was happening on the Court . Have you forgotten ? You pick on Mullin for Nits , like not wearing a tie or sitting on the Scorer’s table. Why ? How about Lavin with his Sneakers and suit clothes . White sneakers that clashed . I don’t want a pissy contest with you but, let’s disagree civilly and not to a Street level of trash talking . You are a long time fan and respected by me and numerous others . I would expect the same in return , even if disagreement occurs . Thanks .
Drop Lavin's first year while acknowledging he had to recruit an entirely new team year 2. Compare the next 3 years to Mullin, that's fair, right? In years 2/3/4 they never won less than 6 conference games, in fact his teams won 8 or more in conference every year but one. Mullin yet to win 8 ever. Lavin Only had a losing record once. Seriously, stick to the Norm comparisons. Mullin should surpass him next year . . . Maybe .

That is how you recruit. Not only was Mike Rice the coach of Team Rio with Reynolds and Antwoine, he also ran tournaments for Rob Kennedy and Hoop Group. This allowed him to develop relationships with many AAU coaches. By traveling on the Spring and Summer circuit, he also interacted with many AAU program directors.

Contrary to what some believe, recruiting is all about having relationships with those who are helping kids make decisions. Just attending games is not enough. The ex NBA player that has a great chance at success is Penny Hardaway. He was involved in AAU basketball on the Nike EYBL circuit so he had the opportunity to meet and establish relationships with other AAU coaches. He also talked about having Larry Brown. No matter how we feel about Brown as a person, the man can coach.

The one thing that I wish Coach Mullin would do is hire another assistant with connections to AAU coaches to help Matt. I say this because in the 20 years that I was involved with a high level AAU program, I never saw a school that depended on only one assistant coach to recruit.

The Rice thing made just so much sense on so many levels for St. John's, and it's frustrating that it just didn't happen. I know there are people who want Mullin to be or already think Mullin is on the hot seat, but I think it's ice cold. And a guy with an ice cold seat just isn't going to demote or replace his longtime friend, no matter how much of a boost Rice would have given this team.

I'm not sure the big three names from Rio end up at Pitt anyway, but they definitely don't end up here. I do fear a kid like Gaffney goes there though.
