Sense this happens
That is how you recruit. Not only was Mike Rice the coach of Team Rio with Reynolds and Antwoine, he also ran tournaments for Rob Kennedy and Hoop Group. This allowed him to develop relationships with many AAU coaches. By traveling on the Spring and Summer circuit, he also interacted with many AAU program directors.
Contrary to what some believe, recruiting is all about having relationships with those who are helping kids make decisions. Just attending games is not enough. The ex NBA player that has a great chance at success is Penny Hardaway. He was involved in AAU basketball on the Nike EYBL circuit so he had the opportunity to meet and establish relationships with other AAU coaches. He also talked about having Larry Brown. No matter how we feel about Brown as a person, the man can coach.
The one thing that I wish Coach Mullin would do is hire another assistant with connections to AAU coaches to help Matt. I say this because in the 20 years that I was involved with a high level AAU program, I never saw a school that depended on only one assistant coach to recruit.
To me, this is all an issue of accountability. It was reported on here that Mullin doesn't even report to the AD, but directly to the school President. The way I see it, Mullin has free reign to do whatever he thinks is best without being challenged. That is not an effective operating model. The AD needs to step in here and direct Mullin to the hires that need to be made to effectively recruit. As it stands right now, it's a bit alarming.
