CW Post

My five biggest takeaways from going to the game:

1) Phil Greene is an excellent shooter (8-10) which I didn't expect, I knew about Lindsey's talents and was not surprised considering he has a well-documented career and great track record of success before coming to SJU
2) God's Gift will be a critical player to this team which lacks height
3) Very solid crowd for an exhibition game last night and I hope that the fans continue to come out throughout the season
4) This team needs to avoid getting in foul trouble, without Harkless on the floor for most of the first half CW Post made the lead at halftime attainable, he played the second half and the stats speak for themselves
5) This is the most talented SJU team I think in a decade since the team had Hatten, Cuffe, Shaw, Diakite and Glover (I think this team is a lot better, but these group of players were probably the last decent class they've had).

Looking forward to watching this team all season.

Did you just mention Diakite and talent in the same sentence?

Question did CWP play any zone against us ? If so how did we handle it? Or was it all man to man all night Also how was our foul shooting? Was anyone in foul trouble?

Defenses were mixed. Have to look at tape to see what was played 'most'.

Our FT shooting wasn't great but we didnt take many attempts. Not looking at box I think Nuri missed both, Gift missed a few, only recall Stith and Harrison as others who toed the line.

Moe picked up 2 first half fouls and sat most of the 1st half. When game ended nobody had more than 3.

It is interesting that the key player this year will be Gift! Can you imagine if he went elsewhere!?!?

Moose, how has he impressed you thus far? Last year you seemed skeptical when I said he ran the floor like a gazelle LOL!!

If Norvel ever qualifies, this team will do some damage to a couple of established BE teams! DEPTH is the only real problem and a huge one.

Great fun to be there and see 6 new guys who are ballers. They can play.

Most impressed by:

(1) GG's movement up and down the court and his offensive moves underneath the basket - including a nice lefty finish.

(2) Greene only taking shots when they presented themselves and making them.

(3) The silky smoothness of Harkless on offense and his 14 rebounds with limited playing time.

(4) Sir Dominic once again (saw it at IS8) showing that he is a serious defender who can be counted on to stop someone.

(5) Team chemistry - their first game and they moved the ball like a veteran team.

(6) Scarcely any forced shots

(7) Everybody serious about defense

Concerned about :

(1) foul trouble and the problems it will cause

(2) rotation - from the News article: "Fatigue will always be a concern," Dunlap said. "We're going to have to be masters of tempo."

If anybody can figure out the most effiicient way to deal with that problem it's our own resident Einstein - Mike Dunlap.

To clarify what I meant, Diakite was a top 100 recruit coming out of high school, big center, close to 7 feet. He did nothing good for St. John's, but was considered a top recruit.

One game against a DII school, but one thing unmistakeable to take from last night is the obvious chemistry the team and coaching staff already have as proven by the unselfish and mature play from the opening tip to the final buzzer; no wild shots, no complaining on calls, no negative body language. They played hard and played together and it was fun to watch.

A short and simple post, but very spot on, Logen. I think we're gonna fall in love with this team.

Question for anyone who attended the game: Pointer looked very long on TV, the equal (or close to it) of Harkless and Gift. At one point I asked myself, who is this guy? Was it just the camera angles, or is he bigger than initially advertised?

When I was with him in early August he was clearly shorter than G-d.

He looks about 6'6" but plays bigger. I thought he was the best defender we had last night. Showed he wasn't afraid to stick his nose into it down low and was tenacious in his on-man coverage.

Game note of interest:

Stefan Bonneau who scored 28 points against us last night was once looked at by SJU. He played with Justin Burrell at Middletown High School (N.Y.) and graduated from their in 2005. Academic woes discouraged D1 intererested parties and Bonneau ended up at a community college (SUNY Orange) finally getting to C.W. Post last year where he led Post (18.9 ppg) into the Division II NCAA playoffs and was All-Metropolitan first team. He's a senior.

Can anyone give a solid analysis of stith tonight?? Not too much was mentioned on him tonight, and judging by what I've heard on the performances of some of the other players, could easily see him sort of get lost in the shuffle a bit.....thanks

Would that surprise you? He's going to get his minutes because we're so thin and inexperienced, Right now they need his experience, but if Amir and/or Pelle make it here his pt will suffer. He's clearly a notch or two below the newcomers when it comes to athleticisim and skill.

I wish the archives from this site weren't ruined. I was one of the few posters to watch him play a game in person. The court was not a big court. It was played at Mt. St. Michael HS so he really didnt have a chance to run like he did last night. Also Erie did not play a wide open game like us. Lastly he looks in better shape this year, not that he wasn't in November when I saw him. He is totally chiseled now as opposed to November.

As for his game he was very complacent on jumpshots in November. He knew his role last night and aced it. Goes to show that sometimes HS games and such are not the best indicators. Its the tools and what a coach can work with that means more.

That was crystal clear last night. However, Stith will be very useful bringing the ball up court under intense pressure in the BE - at least until the others get accustomed to it.

I am glad you now appreciate having him. Your game must have been an anomaly since one of the coaches who saw him play a half dozen times thought his speed and strength were his major attributes.

BTW, Cal almost closed the deal with this kid!

The difference is when Stith brings it up on the break he more than likely stops at either the top of the circle or free throw line and circles back to set up the half court game. The newbies look to push and either finish or pass to an open man. By the time we get to BE play I'm confident the trio of new guys we have on the back line will be able to handle pressure. Don't forget Mo, and even SirDom can handle the ball to help break pressure.

well, one big win against Post and we are all excited. Excitement should continue next week against St Mary's. We still have 27 months to kick some butt.

He's also been receiving a WHOLE DIFFERENT LEVEL OF COACHING than he's ever received in his life. No offense to grade school coaches in africa, and JC coaches in Erie, but Lavin/Dunlap/Rico/Chiles/Hicks/Keady is an other-worldly level of coaching talent now advising and developing this kid compared to what he's experienced in the past...

Pointer may be behind offensively to the others but defensively he looks like the best of the group.
Phil Greene looks great but can he take it to the hole?

Despite the comments on CW Post matching us in rebounds with a much shorter team, I am surprised noone has mentioned boxing out. It was obvious from the start of the game last night that not boxing out is a huge current weakness that will have to be drilled into this very talented group. When the ball went up they all seemed content to try to outjump the Post players but I did not see bodies being put on people, arms out, butts back. Lacking any depth at all in the paint, it's all the more important that they learn to box out. It would be in my top three of practice issues for this team: match-up zone, FT's and boxing out.

Exactly. Rebounding in my mind all all positioning. If we have position others will be reaching over us and they will get called for fouls. They will learn that but as Dunlap said both that and safe defense will be the keys for this undermanned team.

Good warm up. obviously depth and inexperience will hurt. They need to really stay together this year because in big east play we will probably win 3-4 games. Bright future though.
