Cuse Leaving in 2013

But they should never step foot in MSG again unless it's the PRES SEASON NIT, JIMMY V CLASSIC, 2K SPORTS CLASSIC, HOLIDAY FESTIVAL, GOTHAM CLASSIC, CVC (IF/WHEN IT RETURNS TO THE GARDEN), ETC... against some other team or the NIT.

Thanks for the illumination Class of '72. In that case I fixed SJUalum98's post. Those tourneys above represent 17 games per year at the Garden. STJ's schedules 6.

FWIW Not sure you are all aware but there's a new game on the MSG schedule this year called the Gotham Classic. It either has something to do with Batman or NYC, I'm betting Batman doesn't show up. Who's playing in this game on December 22nd? Syracuse vs Temple. Get used to it is all I"m saying. St Johns not playing Syracuse at the Garden every other year will have little affect in cutting Syracuse off from NYC and the World's Most Famous Arena. So all I'm saying is goodbye nose, hello ugly noseless face.

Exactly. While I hate that school with the warmth of a thousand suns, one fact remains true. Jim Dolan could care less if it is Syracuse fans, St. John's fans, Duke fans, Fordham fans or Martians filling the Garden seats. As CEO of a publicly traded corporation his only responsibility is to make a profit. If Syracuse, with its legions of scrap heap alumni living in the area can help fill the arena...they will be on the schedule.
While I'm all for making a point and not scheduling them, what are we really accomplishing? We get far more out of kicking their butts back to Cuyahoga than not playing them.

yep. They're gonna outdraw us when they play at the Garden so to really win the battle of New York you gotta play them and beat them. Games and rivalries like this is what makes sports great. The cowardly approach is for losers. Yeah they're not in the BE anymore but it's still a great rivalry and one I personally would like to see continue especially since we'll be getting better and they'll be getting worse

St. Johns needs to Win 20plus games the next few yrs make the ncaa's back to back & then the Garden
will be a sea of RED.

Scuse just spent 7 million to leave the best college hoops conference & tournament to join the 2nd best hoops conference with a weak tournament
The reason was for a better football tv deal? When was the last Scuse FB team ranked top 20 & played in a bowl game not held in yankee stadium???

I remember winning alot of $$ every time Scuse played at Miami they were blown out consistently. Their FB team & football fans never traveled well. So now their basketball team has to play at NC, Duke,Wake,Fl.St instead of at St.j{garden},at SetonH{rock}at Rutg & at Uconn;very close rd trips for their fans turns into costly long travels in this economy. That does not make sense to me weakening your BB powerhouse to feed off a challenged FB tradition that only wins at home in a dome. please justify spending 7million for that with Bernie Fines lawsuits pending??
I really believe that once Boeheim :nerd: is retired they fall into the losing pit!
Oh dont forget their travel budget just balloned for transporting 40men roster/coaches & equipment in FB

Unfortanetly we have gotten our butts kicked by them the last 10 years. With our improved team under Lavin it would be nice to get some Ws vs them.

Some here make St. John's look like beggars at their own banquet! A great rivalry? It is history! Syracuse cannot play 17 games at the Garden....check your math Austour. They may get one or 2.max and against non-Big East teams. Illuminate us as to how many times Syracuse has scheduled Miami, Boston College or Viginia Tech since they left the Big East. Scumbag Dolan or the corrupt Russian tycoon can try to get Cuse games all they want....it is a free market but Cuse can play just so many away games and only desperate teams or a big big payoff for a nationally ranked program will bring the game to NYC. To say SJ NEEDS Syracuse is demeaning to me as a fan. I am hoping one day the Orange come begging SJ to schedule them and not the other way around. F*ck Syracuse and their NYC area scumbag fans!

Your logic is confusing! If we will be getting better (I hope great), we should protect our market---not share it. They now represent another conference! Why on this earth would a St. John's fan want to give them local exposure?? They claim to be New York's team.....as a deliberate slap to St. John's and you use cowardly and losers in the same sentence and direct it to St. John's and its fans? Cowardly and losers are they that negotiate back room deals with the ACC and turn their back on this so-called "great rivalry". If the Garden or Barclays schedule them in a tourney and we are in it then ......great! For us to schedule them is to bend over and beg. Sorry Charlie, I don't play that way.

Well I'm glad to see you're level headed about the whole thing. I never said anything about STJ needing Syracuse but Syracuse very obviously doesn't need STJ either so your recommendation of petty vindictiveness in ending a decades long rivalry does nothing to benefit anyone involved (FWIW I don't see you as involved). With or without STJ, Syracuse will end up playing in NY 1-2 times per year which is more than they need to maintain relevance with NY recruits and coaches. The list outlines how there's plenty of opportunity and the Gotham Classic illustrates how MSG will not just be a vehicle but really more of a partner in the process. It's not even a Syracuse home game so they don't have to pay a rental fee and they get RPI credit for a neutral court game and they're playing a soon to be Big East team to boot. I like STJ playing Syracuse. I understand the reality of the situation. All those that have turned down $15million extra per year can continue to cast stones. PS don't event think that if STJ had a football team they wouldn't have jumped at the ACC offer themselves.

If memory serves at all, when I watched NYU beat Syracuse with Dave Bing, Chuck Richards, and Jim Boeheim at the old Garden on 49th street, Jim Brown was still the all time leading basketball scorer in the history of the school. Let them slip back in to the muck out of which Boeheim dragged them, and if circumstance brings them across our path, kick their butts.

There is nothing "petty" about my vindictiveness. I suggest you re-read Otis's post reminding us how petty and vindictive Syracuse has been for a decade with former members. But that was OK...they are the great and almighty Syracuse you allude to above.
I do not mind playing Syracuse...in a tourney anywhere but I will never enable them to have any additional market presence in NYC after the damage they have done to the conference.
I do not know if SJ would have been as scummy as you allude to in your PS or if $15 million is too little or too much to sever a half century relationship. It was obviously the right price for Dr. Cantor and AD Gross and you obviously agree. There is nothing to say that by 2014 that $15 million difference could shrink to $5 million or less once the BE has a realistic TV contract. At least you are honest and suggest it was all about the money rather than that Syracuse did it to have a better chance to win a national football championship.
You obviously think we need Syracuse as an opponent. Good for you! I live in NYC and I would never spend another cent to watch a Syracuse game if we play them as a home game at MSG and all I have do is take a 15 minute taxi rather than fly 5 hours.

I've  read the various pros and cons, and there is an argument to be made for both sides. STJ should do what is best for STJ. If we can replace them with another big draw, that would be okay. Syracuse is a corrupt program, from the president down to their pimp coach. Their fans are beyond obnoxious, yet beating them would be very sweet. Tough call.
I would love to see STJ and some of the improving local teams - Iona, Fordham and Manhattan play a few doubleheaders at the garden. I think they would draw well and could become a nice tradition, similar to Philly's Big Five.

Craig Carton and half the bafoon talking heads at WFAN are Syracuse alums, yet most of them are level headed
enough to criticise the move. You can't kill their fans, they have no skin in the game. Money grubbing Universities
all know that their will be a major shakeup in the near future, and they are scrambling now, The college education
equation is crumbling, and more and more americans are questioning the massive debt that stays forever. Even bankruptcy is not a way out. In the next twenty years enrollment will drop at Universities as the economy shifts
back to local manufacturing and technical schools will pick up the slack. Syracuse knows that, and will make moves that are financially sound for their school.

We're obviously going to have to agree to disagree but just a few points. First Syracuse and the rest of the BE didn't have a 30 year history with BC, and especially VTech and Miami so these were easy relationships, with a lack of rivalry, for everyone to walk away from, except STJ who I believe scheduled VTech their first and/or second year in the ACC.

Every school in the country would have taken the money. And this decision was always about the money.

BE Contract will never come close because their football sucks and has no marquee teams except Boise State who seem REALLY happy to be here, not. At least the ACC has Fl State, V Tech and Miami.

STJ doesn't need Syracuse but I like to see them play Syracuse. It's what got me interested in STJ hoops especially what got me to buy my MSG season tix in the 80's. Throwing them in the mix every once in a while will make for a good game. What other non-conference games would you get more excited about, Duke, UNC, Kansas, UCLA, and a few others. That's it. Oh and for STJ if they do it as a home game they'll sell more tickets and make more money. Of course that point will be moot when STJ is selling out the Garden for their conference games against Central Florida and Houston.

I do think it's petty to ignore the business of NCAA sports and paint Syracuse out to be an uber-villain but feel no vindictiveness to Louisville, UConn, Cincy and USF who would have fellated the ACC for the same offer, and will jump at another one some time in the future. And re Jimmy B I'm in the camp that knows he didn't want to do this but is now towing the company line. What else is he supposed to do.

Scuse is the Judas of the BigEast & after Boheim :nerd: retires they will die a nice slow death by hanging just like Iscariot but this time from a Orange tree :woohoo:

No more partying in march in ny city for the orange fans :cheer: that sign in yankee stadium will become a funny joke!

Austour,  Funny you should mention Miami. The past 5 years they have been nationally ranked only once. The three years prior to joining the ACC they were ranked # 1 or 2. They have been cursed since and have lost in 4 of the five smaller bowl games they have gotten invited to since joining the ACC. A friend in Florida who is a U alum says few games are sell outs and the basketball has been atrocious. As for Syracuse, their football was bad in the BE. it will be worse in the ACC. They have had one winning season in 12 years in the BE and likely will battle Duke for the basement rights. As Cindy Lauper sang "Money Changes Everything".

I agree Miami used to be a powerhouse but they left the BE & have fallen badly.
I hope Scuse fades just like them :woohoo:

Miami is still "The U". In their case it's more about brand than performance certainly, but some great brands make great money with crap products. Re Syracuse there's really nowhere for them to fade to.
