Curbelo (Possibly) a Johnny

No idea about Curbelo, but I would agree that NILs have to be a major consideration for both transfers and high school seniors. Hopefully we have something competitive in place to help CMA and staff.

it is hard to believe that StJ’s NIL program is or will be competitive since the NIL programs at many colleges are financed through alum and booster donations.

Given the fact that many of the hardest core St. J’s faithful fans refuse to join the WedWhite club, much less pay a nickel to support this site, Red.fans (f/k/a “Redmen.com”) despite the fact they visit the site multiple times each day leads me to doubt those fans will contribute to a St. John’s NIL program.

There are companies out there that specialize in making NIL deals for college athletes in fact I believe I read that St. John's has one. NIL isn't about nickel and dime contributions from fans it's about major corporations and well heeled alumni and donors.

Just to give an example on NILs. Bruce Young of Alabama had between $800K - $1M in NIL deals he signed last summer going into his sophomore year and that was before he even started a game at QB for Alabama (he was the backup to Mac Jones and mopped up a few games his freshman year) let alone before winning the Heisman trophy last year.

Players are definitely paying attention and Syracuse (I think it was them) lost out on a recruit who had given a verbal so he could go to another where he could get better NIL deals.

NIL deals must have financial caps to have fair and equitable competition. This pay to play scheme is disgraceful. It doesn't belong in amateur college sports.
Perhaps one day large pharmaceutical companies will offer Nils to pre-med students who will certainly benefit society a hell of a lot more than the 99% of basketball players who will never play professional basketball and the fewer than 1 % certain to play in the pros certainly don't need to be paid to play for certain schools when they will be grossly overpaid by the time they "quit" college.
That is why the run by St. Peter's was so special.

It's very rare that I disagree with EVERY word in a post.
But here we are.

Not sure how close you follow NIL but a good number of schools are establishing portals for fans to donate on a monthly basis for NIL sponsorship.

I don't have time at 11:06 pm to provide long list all examples but the UNC football program has "Heels4Life" which serves as a good example where fans make monthly donations starting at $15 per month. The University of Georgia, Alabama, and others have giving and generous fans.

St. John's lacks giving and generous fans.

Whether one believes in the concept of the NIL process of not, the fact is it’s here to stay and if the Johnnies want to stay competitive with the big boys they better have deals set up quickly. There are legitimate arguments for and against thNIL process but clearly the definition of “amateur” ain’t what it used to be.

The definition of amateur started changing before many of these college athletes were born.

You could be a professional in one sport while an amateur in another, the “sponsorships” of Olympic athletes in some sport and so on.

I think the NCAA is taking a "wait and see" approach to NILs. I can only hope, that if it completely destroys any remaining semblance of parity, they will step in and install an adjustment. However, we all know the NCAA makes decision exclusively on revenue so who knows where this goes.

Another reason to miss the "good ole days".

Too bad. Because what I said is the reason St. John's will forever be relegated to the second division of college basketball. You may as well become a Kansas fan or a Kentucky fan.

St. John's relegated itself to the second division of college basketball long before NILs.
And I'm still here.

And so lawmanfan doesn't yell at me: I think Curbelo is a gamble worth taking, a player who could potentially form a really dynamic (and fun) backcourt if he reverts back to freshman form.

Repole could make St. John's competitive in NIL's with the change from the sofa in his shed. Still amazing to me he thinks his wealth entitles him to go on the radio and throw a tantrum because the coaching search didn't go his way, but when he could so obviously help the program succeed he is no where to be found. Total blowhard.

Agree on both counts and the NCAA should have acted before and might have controlled it but waited for California to pass legislation and other States and Congress to threaten them before doing the inevitable. I however am sure Andre will be able to get some nice NIL deals here.

Hopefully, we will know if he is coming or not this week.
