Curbelo (Possibly) a Johnny

Wusu has a place in the program but by no means an elite guard in this conference or any major conference. His handle is suspect and his decision making is poor. If Storr's talent level alone is not enough to start over what I believe to be a mediocre talent at best, then egis team will struggle to compete with most of the teams in the conference and not even sniff a birth in the Dance.
Good thing you're not a talent evaluator.

Easy to point out some of Wusu’s shortcomings but hes a kid who’s done everything for us in his 2 years while learning on the fly. Betcha if u poll the other 10 coaches they’d not only take him but he’d contribute immediately.

Not a point guard but he handles the ball. Not a 4 but he guards the other teams strongest player. Not a shooter but he’s scoring 20 vs U
Providence. Not a forward but 11 rebounds vs Nova and on and on and on

If Curbelo turns out to be the only portal newcomer, I'm willing to bet my life that Wusu would be our starting PF. We'd be small, but I'd be willing to take that risk.

Hopefully staff would also be willing considering I just staked my life on it.

Here is a CBS Sports list of top 10 potential impactful transfers. Curbelo at number 4.

4. Andre Curbelo

Old school: Illinois

Curbelo's sophomore season never got off the ground after a concussion-related issue kept him from building on a standout freshman season. Still, any coach who believes in their ability to develop point guards would be giddy over the chance to help Curbelo reach his full potential. The former top-50 prospect from the 2020 class averaged 4.2 assists in just 21.5 minutes per game as a freshman, and he showed deftness at beating defenders off the dribble and finishing inside the arc. Turnover issues, a lack of 3-point shooting and his sophomore season as a whole are all legitimate red flags. But the potential reward will outweigh the risks for a program needing a lead guard.

I don't even argue anymore with people that have convinced themselves Wusu is not a good player.

If we go in to next season with 2 starting guards well under 6', and a starting PF who is maybe 6'4", not only am I not renewing my season tickets(that I gave up 3 seasons ago), but I'm canceling my subscription to Fox sports.

I could see a starting line up of

Curberlo 6'1
Posh 6'0
Wusu 6'4
Storr 6'6
Soriano 6'10

That's probably the smallest CMA will go. Shortest starting 4 I've ever seen him use was 6'6. Storr is pretty stout he can probably guard the 2-4 position.

Well, it's too early to speculate the starting line-up, but this one would be tough to get excited about. I think we would need to pick-up an additional starter from the portal.

Also, not knocking them but....Posh is not 6'0 and I don't think Curbelo is 6'1. We all know listed heights are traditionally exaggerate, but the bottom line is those two guards are comparatively small.

I mean you could say that about everybody as exaggerating height, and who cares how tall somebody is if they can play their position effectively. Charles Barkley was 6'5 and one of the best PFs of all time. People focus on the wrong things, Auburn won the SEC a few years ago when their tallest player was 6'6. Rick Pitino won a National Championship 9 years ago with 2 starting guards under 6 foot in Peyton Siva and Russ Smith. Most important thing in winning is having good players, there's some really bad teams with good height. Posh and Curberlo would be the best guard tandem in the Big East if Curberlo is fully healthy I don't care if they both were 5'5.

If we can’t do much better than this. I think it’s time to put the balls away

It's kinda funny the same people that are complaining about Curberlo being too small and can't shoot are the same people that also dislike Wusu and claim we're in trouble if he starts. When Wusu is literally is everything they claim they want in a guard, he's a big (6'4 240) can shoot (38% from 3), pass (4 APG), a good A/T ratio (4-2), and good defense (1.3 SPG). And he did these numbers without an off-season, he was injured the entire time.

I could go grab a random name at in other P6 school and attach Wusu's stats to that player and say St. John's is interested, and these guys would see he's 6'4 SG and 38% from 3 and lose their mind with excitement.

Yes, of course I know all heights are exaggerated - I alluded to that in my post. In any event, there are always exceptions and that Louisville team (that did have a 6'10" 1st round NBA player -Deng) was awesome. The Siva/Smith tandem was a lot of fun to watch, but it's undeniably rare. I appreciate you wanting to keep it positive and understand your point that some posters routinely go negative. I like to think of myself as pragmatic and, to be fair, folks who expressed concerns about shooting last summer turned out to be correct. I am hoping to land Curbelo, but think we will need another big fish to be competitive.

Lastly, it is somewhat of a tradition that we have the "best guard tandem in the Big East" every April-November. So, you may be newer to the board, but you definitely got the hang of it. :giggle:

And I would like to add that Belo and Posh both rebound above avg for their height and position.
I think them with an improving Wusu would make a nasty backcourt.
I don’t think that Wusu takes a step back this coming year either. He improved across the board and I think he will improve even more in his third year.

I think it's insane that we have a great shot at adding Curbelo, but people are griping about the team. Our guards would be nasty on both ends of the court.

Assuming Curbelo doesn't fall through, pretty sure we'd be adding a talented PF afterward.

Too many of us have suffered from PTSD too long that we aren't even allowing ourselves to see the possibilities. . .

Do you really worry about Posh being outsized or taken advantage of by BE 2 guards though? Size is good to have no doubt, but if my 2 best guards are 6 foot, I’m playing them together. Those 2s that have legitimate size adavantage over posh will have to deal with him harassing them 90 feet. I think starting wusu as your 4 is a much bigger risk size wise than playing posh and Curbelo together.
