Curbelo (Possibly) a Johnny

If SJU ends up with say a combo of Curbelo and Williams that is OK. I would give that a B for a grade on transfers.

But they need more than a B to make a leap next year. They need an A or A+.

No way Curbelo/Williams along with returning talent+King+Storr makes up for loss of Champ and Wheeler let alone exceed their production.

You’ll never make up for Julian’s production. But those additions while counting on improvements from Pinzon and the front court in a weaker big East would be solid IMO

And let’s be honest here. The top transfers aren’t coming to SJU. Look at the lists of schools they’re visiting. Cream of the crop

Biggest thing would be adding experienced high major talent. Not mid majors transferring up. Williams and curbelo do that

No way is a stretch. No one would have said Wheeler is better than Williams this time last year. And last season everyone in the country wanted Curbelo. It’s possible to both be better off if those guys stayed, and still be better than we were last year.

How is not beating out Wusu a sign of trouble? Wusu has starting experience and is one of the better returning guards stats wise in the conference. And as Amase has mentioned he did all that and missed the entire off-season last year. There would be no shame in Storr not beating him out immediately to start the season. Some of you guys disrespect Wusu so much, it's unreal. If Wusu transferred he could be a starter on a lot of tournament teams.
Wusu is out of position at guard. He has trouble simultaneously seeing the court and handling the ball. I asked a coach friend about using him in a Bernard King or Mark Aguirre role and he said it is a possibility but that back to the basket wing four position is very much out of style in the age of the 3pt basket. Also, don't know if Wusu has the rotational and lateral quickness and agility for the role. Pinzon is a true guard with signs of true court vision and paired with Posh opens up a lot, with Posh and Curbelo (which I suspect is a fantasy), Pinzon can back up 1, 2, and 3. We need a catch and shoot 3 pt scorer very badly.

That's fine but that is a wing and a prayer. And hoping the rest of the BE falters is also not much of a plan.

Much of the BE did falter last year as only 4 teams made the NCAA's and 1 made it because they earned the automatic bid (Georgetown-otherwise they were not even an NIT team). SJU finished 10-9, and did not make the NCAA's. The weaker the conference the harder it will be to make the NCAA's regardless if they move up a spot or two in the standings.

If Curbelo and WIlliams were coming LAST year then I would say yes. And let's not overrate Wheeler. He wasn't that good.

On paper Curbelo and Williams are better than SJU's transfer class last year. But the strength of SJU last year was the return of Champ and Posh period. If Champ had stayed in the draft SJU would have been picked near or dead last in my opinion. I think they would have gone 4-16 or 5-15 maybe

The issue is without Champ and now Wheeler and with a decent but hardly great incoming recruiting class the incoming transfers have to be REALLY GOOD. A Wheeler won't cut it. Have to be better than Wheeler. Both of them significantly imho.

That’s my point. Saying there’s no way now is silly. We see what difference a year can make. And you brought up the loss of Wheeler.

Wusu has the best court vision on the team. Come at his handle all you want but no one sees the floor better.

I think as far as the portal goes, our main focus should be what it's always been regarding transfers. NY/NJ kids who may want to come back and play closer to home. Not that you don't cast a wide net and see what the interest level is on some of these other high level kids who may fill our needs, but it's hard to imagine us being much interest to most of the players who don't have ties to the area. Not when you have much more prolific programs sniffing around.

Wusu is such a unique player and talent. He is not a prototypical anything. And he can, and is willing to, defend anybody on the floor, including fronting, effectively, bigs. I believe he will have a major jump up this year, kind of like Earlington did going into his junior year. But we digress on this Potential Curbelo forum.

I am going to take the optimistic view here. If we add Curbelo and he plays back to his Freshman year which I see no reason he can't along with a decent high major forward like Williams along with Storr I think we can be close to as competitive as this season. Not expecting an NCAA Tournament bid but stranger things have happened. A lot of unknowns at this point.

I have to agree that despite the fact that his steal numbers were similar to last year, Posh did not appear to me to be the dominant defender he was his freshman year.
There were many games this year where teams had someone bring the ball up who Posh wasn't guarding. He's just as good as last year and it's not that teams are figuring him out, it's more that teams have figured out it is better to avoid him.

We are bringing back more players than last year, so hopefully it will not take as long to get the defense together. We shall see, but as always I will have high hopes for this team.

I hear what you’re saying Footwork and I agree. These bigger programs only have a limited number of scholarships available and if they sign a top transfer who will demand minutes someone else might leave. This is all very fluid this time of year now. Let’s see how it all shakes out. I would like to land Curbelo, Williams and the Kid Melendez.

I hope this was free information, otherwise Zach needs to be ashamed of himself charging people for this basic information that anybody with common sense that half-way follows recruiting could have figured out themselves. I literally said this exact same thing in the transfers thread, gave a tier list of who I thought they would prioritize between Curbelo, Toussaint, and Wynter and said they'd only take one of them and that the other scholarship would goto a 4, and considering Williams is the only 4 they've been publicly linked to it's common sense he would be one of the guys they are most focused on.
Zach is guilty of Plagiarism, lol. Would not be the first time.

I brought up the loss of Wheeler not because I think he is a A+ player but because he was the 3rd leading scorer on a mediocre team. Could I have envisioned that when he signed last year? Yeah I could and I still would not thought he was anything great. The fact of the matter is SJU needed a lot more from either Wheeler or another transfer to be good this year. So not sure how that negates my point.

Wusu has a place in the program but by no means an elite guard in this conference or any major conference. His handle is suspect and his decision making is poor. If Storr's talent level alone is not enough to start over what I believe to be a mediocre talent at best, then egis team will struggle to compete with most of the teams in the conference and not even sniff a birth in the Dance.
