Creighton

Saying Creighton would beat the pants off us is funny. Did Cincy, ND, UConn, etc. beat the pants off us? No we beat them. I'm much more worried of Murray State than Creighton. At least Murray is athletic as hell and have many players that can make you pay. Canaan is the ring leader, but it's not just him. With Creighton, it's a 1 man show. Pass to McDermott, lays it up, McDermott for 3, McDermott drawing fouls, McDermott rebounding, etc. They are not hard to figure out, thus 3-5 in their past 8 MVC games (none of those losses to great teams). We may not be great offensively, but defensively we would not let them score at will like other mid majors do. Where is the Obekpa equivalent in the MVC? Don't worry I'll wait. Where's the Sampson equivalent in the MVC? Don't worry I'll wait. Obekpa/Pointer/Sampson would dominate them physically on D. At the very least they would alter a ton if shots if not blocking them. We have yet to see Dougie score 30 pts against a tall, long, athletic beast like Obekpa. We only see him dominating small, slow 2 and 3 star recruits. Can they beat us? Yes. In a tight game...we won't be blown out by them.
yeah but against us someone else besides McDermott will put up 20 guranteed just seems to work like that for stjohns

We did not lose because of defense tonight...we lost because Jakarr and Harrison (despite 18 pts) were ICE cold shooting. We held L'Ville to 37% FG and 25% from 3. If we can hold L'Ville to those numbers, imagine what we could do to Creighton on a good defensive night. Our problem is by FAR offense. We don't have pure shooters...we have 1 mid range only guy (Sampson), 1 floater/layup/ok 3 pt guy (Harrison), 1 insanely streaky guy (Greene), etc. If we had some real shooters we would be able to knock off the real big names.

agree.

Basketball messiah, no, some of you are losing sleep over the fact that we need a shooter. Max Hooper is a shooter, no?

Max Hooper fellas

that's us...always looking for the basketball messiah.

wait until greene refuses to pass him the ball.

Must be a racial thing. Maybe Phil won't pass the ball to any white player.

The problem is that Greene thinks he is better than he actually is, and when he gets hot, he shoots 10+ bad shots that he shouldn't have taken, he is the assists leader, now someone needs to teach him to pass more and dribble less when hes running the point.

From what I have seen he also feels that he needs to prove something by shooting more since Brogault got the start.

Ok, let me be blunt.

Phil has his deficiencies---as do all of our players. But this whole "Phil won't pass the ball to Marco" thing, and "Phil doesn't like Marco" is about a bunch of white posters who want to see the white player do well and are willing to throw another player under the bus because they are not seeing what they want to happen.

There has been no indication of discord or dislike between any of our players. But posters will make this crap up because they don't like what they see on the court. Phil shoots too much---sometimes. Last night, he and DLo were the only two who were scoring. Therefore, he kept shooting.

Marco played a good all around game last night but Phil not getting him the ball was not why we lost. He started out slowly. The game seemed too fast for him at first. That is not unusual. As he has adjusted to the speed of the game, he has played more. His defense has caught up. He is still rushing his shot a bit against quicker defenses. When he has more time to shoot, he is much more efficient.

The team will continue to grow and improve. This board goes nut after each loss. One guy even questioned how many days Lavin needs to take off for the death of his father. SMH! When my mother died in Florida, I was gone for more than a week because I had to go out of state. The funeral was a week after her death. That is more or less the Catholic protocol. Other religions bury much more quickly. Either way, some of these speculations are nuts.

Are there actually posters on this board who think Max will give us more than 4 ppg?

The reason Greene doesn't pass the ball to Bourgault is due to him having poor court vision and not being a PG. Simple.

The usual suspects seem to go ape 'ish whenever we lose a game. I saw where the one person questioned Lavin on his return to the team following his father's death. The same poster questioned Lavin last season on when he should return from cancer. A sad individual.

Heck! I also received an entire week off for my father's passing (we lived in the same city). The nerve of some people.

Hey, MJDinkins, I'll bet that poster didn't want Lavin to get the job in the first place. I hope my posts aren't as "agenda driven" as I perceive some others to be.

if it boils down to a white-black thing...some "fans" better look for a different sport.

maybe the team could be better and maybe it can't. what irks people like me is watching a bricklayer missing an open man who has a better shot. then the bricklayer forces something up with time running out on the shot clock. to me, that's the equivalent of a turnover.

i don't know why the coaches love greene so much. he must be breaking his behind in practice. what other explanation could there be?

I could see playing Greene so much w Branch out. What I dont understand is all the minutes he gets when Branch played.

First, How did this "Creighton" thread morph into an "Ebony and Ivory" thread??
Second, as a team, we hold the ball way too much to get good looks.....whether it be for Marco or Karr, and God Forbid...Obekpa! I wish I could agree with Moose about CO not having post up moves but how in the hell could we determine that? I cannot recall a play this season where he was put in a position to post up in our offensive scheme!
The offense revolves, at present, around three players: Harrison, Karr and Greene. Pointer sometimes gets into the flow but rarely. Obekpa is totally left out of the equation. The opposition's defense has figured that out to the point that they can double on one of the three scorers, thus forcing us to take bad shots.
Case in point....last night Obekpa played 29 minutes and took ZERO shots! He grabbed 12 rebounds and had 3 blocks. That's 30 points he prevented but his reward? Do not feed him the ball.
In the last FOUR games, he has taken a total of 8 shots! In the win over Uconn, Chris was 2-2 while D and G took 23 shots.....they made only 5!
Let's face it.....when practice began in October the starting team was to be Obekpa, Sanchez and Sampson up front for a terrific rebounding front line and Branch and Harrison in the backcourt.
Greene, Pointer, Garrett and Bourgault were to be supporting actors.
It just did not work out as planned.
That we have one white player has nothing to do with anything! That he and Greene and Pointer are starters has a lot to do with who we are right now.....and that is not a very good basketball team.

A couple of times, the ball was passed in to CO and there was at least one offensive board where he had a point blank shot at the rim, and he just passed the ball back out. He is very limited offensively. In past games, I've seen him take baby hooks from near the basket. In one game, he pump faked a defender and drove by him for a slam but recently he hasn't looked for his shot at all.

Being "limited" offensively" applies to almost every player on this team except for Sampson, Harrison and Branch. That does not stop the coaches from allowing Greene to take 13 shots. Last night in the second half comedy of errors, I saw one pass to Obekpa by Pointer. That "pass" was 3 feet too high and sailed out of bounds.....one of the many Pointer lowlights of the night.
Even Karr has to force many of his shots since he often is the 3rd option in the Greene/Harrsion show. It usually is a horror show. When Karr puts the ball on the floor it's a 50/50 that he will turn the ball over.
Of course, much of this is on the coaches who allow the inmates to run the asylum.
See....you guys suckered me into making all these non-Creighton comments here when they belonged in the 'Ville thread! LOL!

Obekpa doesn't have a back-to-the-basket game nor an overall, consistent offensive game to be "fed the ball." I think he's game is mostly made up of tip-in's and follow up dunks. He could get the dish off for dunks, but we tend to just shoot jumpers. He may occasionally hit the mid-range shot, but I wouldn't feel too confident in him taking those shots often.

You're asking for trouble, if Obekpa is often-fed the ball.
