Creighton

Just to add: I did some research and the last time Creighton won against a ranked power conference opponent in the regular season was Nov. 27, 1999 well over 10 years ago. They beat #23 Iowa. Are you seeing my perspective better? This is a team that does great in conference, and not so much outside of that. Within the MVC they are the Yankees. Against power opponents they are scrappy at times, but more times than not exit the first or second round.

Also, no way Creighton can beat a confident G'Town team the way they are playing right now. They imposed their will against us, and they would do it even easier against them. They are very physical, they are big, strong, and play amazing defense. They have the ability to take your best scorer and make them totally irrelevant. The next biggest scorer for Creighton behind McDermott's 23 PPG is a 9 PPG guy further perpetuating my "one player team" label on them. I would LOVE to see what McDermott could do against real behemoths who can defend and score with an athletic advantage. I honestly think he would be given fits. The step up from dominating the MVC to dominating the ACC/Big East/Big Ten/Big 12 is absolutely massive. They might as well be D I and D II.

You don't have to look too far.

Against Wisconsin this year, 30/8.

Need a top ranked team, against North Carolina last year, 20/9.

As a frosh against ranked BYU, 20/12.

McDermott will be just fine.

Wisconsin was not ranked when they lost to Creighton. They never beat UNC last year let alone any ranked team and only met UNC in the tourney, losing by 14. BYU is not a major conference team. I said power conference ranked.

All my points remain. All this love and respect for a team that hasn't beat a power conference ranked team in nearly 14 years in the regular season. I don't get it.

What is with your infatuation for power conferences? Good teams can come from anywhere.

You totally miss my point. This is not a question of if Creighton is good or not. You can be good and not even in the top 25. My point is they have no business being ranked. None.

Joe3.... G'town hasn't made it out of the first weekend of the NCAA Tournament since 2007. Guess what? They've been eliminated by three mid-majors in that span.... Davidson (2008), Ohio (2010), and VCU (2011). They were also spanked by the latter two.

G'town has been playing well of late, but do not act for a second they are above being beaten by Creighton. You probably would've been on here saying the same thing prior to G'town's past games versus the Davidson's, Ohio's, and VCU's.

From time to time, you may make a good point. On the other end of the spectrum, your posts can be of the 'left field variety,' as well as your propensity to look at things as black and white.

Vermont also beat Cuse once. Upsets happen ALL the time. But one thing you forget: G'Town would beat those teams you listed 80/100 times. Sometimes the better team honestly does not win. Teams have off days. Not sure about Ohio, but VCU and Davidson were battle tested against real teams. Creighton has to go back 14 years to find a win vs. a ranked power conference team in the regular season. That is absurd. At least teams like VCU could hang with the big boys over and over. Same for Davidson when they had Curry (now an NBA star). Let me ask you something...would you respect Mike Tyson beating the crap out of a 5'5 120 lb guy with no muscle mass, or would you respect him more if he had more even fights mixed in with Ali's? Creighton is screwed because it will come into the tourney with no real bully teams beating up on them and showing them what it takes to compete at the highest level. It's the same thing as using a weighted doughnut in baseball. You put the heavier weight on the bat, so when you actually go up to bat, it's easier and lighter. Creighton has no heavy weight...all it knows is cupcakes and some of the big bullies with battle scars will make them submit. Is it so much to ask to beat a few real ranked teams before getting their ranking and respect? I still think G'Town wins by 20.

You've covered in this post what I've just stated about you in my previous post..... "From time to time, you may make a good point. On the other end of the spectrum, your posts can be of the 'left field variety,' as well as your propensity to look at things as black and white."

Besides, we're not talking about Vermont beating 'Cuse. We're talking about G'town losing 3 of their last 5 games they've played, in the NCAA Tournament, to mid-majors. Like I stated earlier, they were spanked by two of 'em. G'town may win by 20, but to continue to state that Creighton practically doesn't have a shot is ludicrous.

By the way, Creighton won their first round game (versus Alabama) in last season's NCAA Tournament before bowing out to UNC, in which was essentially a home game for the Tar Heels (Greensboro, NC). It really doesn't have much bearing this season, but I'm wondering if you knew that or not.

Your constant use of analogies are also usually good for a laugh. LOL

I'm specifically looking at style of play, not just mid major vs major when talking G'Town dominating Creighton. You have zero respect for their defense even after watching them whoop us twice and beat L'Ville? They would not be shutting down a team like UConn with 3 good scorers...they would be shutting down ONE player and we all know who that is. It makes it that much easier to focus on 1 guy. I'll admit I'm not a great tactician when it comes to basketball, but I remember the box and 1 was used against us with Harrison by some teams. He was TOTALLY shut down by it. I'd be very interested to see that applied to McDermott and see if Creighton could still win against a great team. Last game he only scored 8 pts and they were blown out. That's expected. By the way, Alabama is not exactly a basketball powerhouse. That is a relatively easy draw come tourney time when you consider who other teams have to get by i.e. Duke, Cuse, G'Town, L'Ville, Michigan, Ohio State, Indiana, etc. I don't care that they came close against UNC...we came "close" against Duke last year at their place...so what?

The fact is I was like 9 years old watching Bill Nye The Science Guy the last time Creighton actually beat anyone nationally ranked from a power conference in the regular season. And you can make the argument even THAT opponent was weak for the criteria (#23 Iowa). God knows when the last time they beat a team like #14 Cincy was or a top 5 team (we did it and it was no biggie). Let's try to focus on the scheduling though, not who would beat who. I looked through the past 15 years of their records and they MAYBE faced 5 or 6 ranked opponents (reg season) in the past DECADE! We face ranked opponents practically every few weeks! Then I looked at other top mid majors i.e. Memphis, Gonzaga, Butler, VCU, Temple, etc. and ALL of them at least make an effort to face real studs instead of cupcakes. No excuses for why they can't schedule big teams when the others can. I'd be much more afraid of a Memphis or Gonzaga than a Creighton that's for sure. Not sure I've ever seen another team rewarded so nicely for a painfully weak schedule.

I hate this argument. Unless you are saying that John Thompson III is not capable of getting past the first weekend of the tournament, what does the 2007-2011 teams have anything to do with this team? Is there anyone even left from the 2011 team? I happen to like this Georgetown team, but I believe the match-ups will determine their fate.

Listen the only thing I really disagree with is when you say Creighton only has one scorer. What if somebody on a Creighton forum said that St. Johns team is not good, shut down Harrison and you will win. You would disagree wouldn't you, because we have Jakarr, Phil, and other contributors. Well I bet Creighton has people that contribute too, and you just don't know. I am sure you will follow up this post with giving me stats and how nobody on their team averages nearly as many points as McDermott, but that doesn't really prove much. Stop talking crap about another team and worry about ours.

It has nothing to do with their current team. If you followed the conversation, then you would see why I was making those points.

They have four players on their roster who were on that 2010-2011 team.... Markel Starks, Nate Lubick, Aaron Bowen, and Moses Ayegba (they have five, if you include walk-on, John Caprio). The former two played quite a bit of minutes (Lubick started), while the latter two didn't particularly play much.

Don't tell me what team to talk about. I talk about the teams I want. They are technically relevant to the board too as a likely future C-7 member. What you fail to realize is the dropoff in Creighton scoring goes from 23 PPG (McDermott) to 9 PPG (Echenique). That is a major dropoff and only proves my point they are a 1 player team. If someone said we were a 1 player team I'd show them we have D'Lo at 18.5, Sampson at 14.5, Greene at 9, and Branch at about 10. That doesn't even take into account Bourgault who can easily be a 10+ PPG guy with his increased role. Pointer or Garrett have also been known to rattle off 15 pts every once in a while. We are MUCH more balanced. Were you watching last game? McDermott was held to 8 pts and they got blown out of the gym by 20. Coincidence? No.

Joe3 I doubt there is a poster on this board that would not welcome Echenique on our team.
He would be a great addition.

I can't believe you guys continue this debate. Just agree with him and hope he goes away.

Instead I spent the morning watching WIsconsin and Miami and sit here amazed at how good they are when they sucked so bad in November and December. It was far more enjoyable.

--------

It would certainly have been had it been this year but if Creighton does get an invite along with Butler and Xavier ( and possibly VCU) who seem like locks to be in the league Syracuse, PITT, Louisville, Notre Dame, Cincinnati and UCONN won't be so the step up won't be as absolutely massive as you think. That's two, possibly three, premium bb schools being added and six leaving.
