Creighton, Wed. Jan. 4, 8:30pm, FS1/570AM

You have to give credit to Creighton for playing good defense in the first half. I know we don't have a strong inside game but whoever is on Patton needs to try to keep from getting the ball in so close.

Does anyone know why Patton isn't on draft boards?

Overall it was a fun game.

Creighton is a GREAT team. I am not sure we ever had a chance to beat them. We tried but never got within 8. This was a good loss. Crowd was electric, and enthusiastic. I had a great time even in defeat. Creighton is a final four team...good for them. Bring on Xavier...and...bring on bedtime...Goodnight

Did Mullin promise Yakwe he would start every game? He's never ready for a pass, still doesn't rebound. He should get less playing time, has to earn his playing time.. Someone has to tell Mullin that Williams is on the bench.
Speaking of the bench what's up with Freudenberg? And having Alibecovic in the game drives me crazy. Didn't take him long to commit two three point fouls, along with that slap at a rebound to Watson for another of his three pointers.
Could have used better games from Ahmed and Ellison.
Defensive wise we allowed too many easy points inside, failing to front Patton. Plus our transition defense waspoor in the first half.
Offensively we waited until the second half to drive and pick up fouls.
Enjoyed our kids fighting back. Looking forward to our future.

Just got back from the game. I'm sure I can't add anything to what's already been said. But you cannot win shooting 39% from the field, or trailing 42-26 on points in the paint, or trailing 22-5 in fast break points in the first half.

Disappointing loss, but not totally unexpected. I like the way our guys fought back in the second half and when we cut their lead to eight, the crowd was really into it.

To paraphrase an old song, "Our future's so bright, I wear my sunglasses at night."

Go Johnnies!

my negative takes on game:
1- Ali is a liability- point blank!
2- LoVett is a great scorer, but lacks being a point guard ( at least this game )
3- Ellison gives up on defense, stands there as guys lay it up
4- Ponds did not touch it enough tonight- no screens set for him
5- Mussini came in and gave us some energy, never saw him again
6- Williams...same as above
Positives:
1- Team showed guts, came back and showed toughness
2- Owens looks better and better, foul trouble hurt him
3- crowd was electric again
Overall, this is a great team....nothing to be ashamed of here, but we could of had them.

Good Re-Cappy

Some observations

1) Very good crowd tonight.
2) Thought the kids really fought hard tonight to get back in game. Proud of them as we were overmatched, But, too many empty possessions when we were making a run.
3) Refereeing was awful. Lots of ticky tack fouls on us and very few on them. I expected Mullin to be teed up.
4) Ahmed was awful tonight. Talented and we need him but he needs to be spoken to. His forced drives are horrible (cannot finish; always shoots on way down as he cannot elevate above defenders). But what really gets me is his propensity to dog it after one of his failed attempts which are followed by a nice, leisurely jog down court while the opposition is pushing it. If Mullin doesn't speak to him, I will. :)
5) Ellison - still oblivious on the court; should never attempt to shoot on the move.

That said, was good to feel a pulse at CA. I think we are progressing which is all I am looking for at this point. Biggest concern is that our bigs don't have a high ceiling. So, we really need Brown

EDIT

6) Alibegovic should not play.
7) Williams should have played much more

Mullin was quick to pull guys tonight who missed assignments, made stupid plays, didn't play within the offense, etc. Hence why you saw guys sit for stretches. Exactly what Mullin should be doing. Williams wasn't the presence inside he's been in prior games, missed a few chippies, missed various defensive assignments, and deserved the limited minutes. Up to him to play better, as there is ample room for minutes in the front court. Sat Ponds for probably the longest stretch this year because he wasn't playing well. Same for Ahmed.

Defensive awareness and discipline as a whole needs to be better. I think that is the single biggest thing we can improve on.

Positives:
Mullin seems to be getting more comfortable as a coach. When cameras are on the huddle, he is doing all the talking, and leading.
Team didn't phone it in down 24. Truth be told Creighton had a lot of subs in during the run, but I will take the effort any day.

Negatives:
Lots of work needed in the recruiting department to bolster the front court. Owens and Williams give it their all, but we need more strength up front.
Yakwe needs a rosin bag. Someone should create a stat called "fumbled passes". Announcers years from now would give the credit to Yakwe as the impetus for the stat. He has to be leading the nation.

Not sure if you watched the game but Williams had no chance last night. Terrible matchup for him, at the game you could see he gets winded fast. Yakwe was the only one to put a body on Patton and probably did the best job of all on
him.
As bad as everyone seems to think Alli is the big German is totally lost in BE play therefore as of know AA is currently the better choice.
Ahmed is totally out of control and for some reason gets pissed when taken out after making one of his crazy spin moves to nowhere. I guess he doesn't get the hint he's coming out when he's out of control.
That game was too fast for Ellison.

All in all didn't expect to win, wasn't happy after the first half but was pleasantly surprised with the second half. Last year this is a 35 point loss. These guys have some fight.

Thought it was a good effort in the second half. It would have been closer if we converted on those easy layups. A lot of in and outs from Lovett and there was a sequence where Williams missed three in a row. Couldnt stop their center. What a beast

Agree we did not pick well for our e pt shots Actually did not see them pick when they did the were not in place properly or strong enough to not allow the defensive to break thru IT ALL COMES DOWN TO FRONT COURT a guy like brown defends the rim and a lot of those inside baskets would not have taken place. we did look slow but still think we are headed in the right direction. next yr will be diff A big diff over last yr

Qwen's was just outclassed needs 30 lbs plus must get some work on offensive moes around the rim. After all he was not 6-4 guarding a 7 footer he is 6-11

One real negative is Yakwe regression becoming alarming.

Yes he is too one dementional But that lends him to be passive There is something there a spark just has to be ignited

Not much more to add other then to once again give kudos to the great crowd last night. Historically the CA crowds have been pretty lame, to say the least. Not any more. Some of us were talking about how we've never seen a CA crowd as loud as it was against Butler. The crowd never bailed on the kids last night, and IMO that was one of the reasons the kids fought back, when they could have just as easily gotten their doors completely blown off. I can easily see CA becoming one of the toughest places to play for opposing teams, once we start winning consistently.

Creighton is very good, played hard, and thought our coaching was strong. Which is good to see.
8:30pm start versus Top 10 team should = full house disappointed that did not happen.
Overall young team effort was there but shows how you have to be perfect versus a team like that to win.

In regards to Yakwe he is receiving minutes because there is a real possibility he will transfer after this year.
A redshirt may be better to develop. Remember he started early.
