@Creighton, Sat., Jan. 13, 1p, FOX

The player that alone won us the Providence and Hofstra games and outplayed your boyfriend Posh head to head is the same one that contributed to this loss with poor shooting. I predicted cold shooting pregame on a -30 windchill day and that it came from the kids from Texas and So. Cal is no surprise. 1st team BE candidate Alexander shot 3 for 14. Think he's getting hammered on the Creighton message board? We were ONE play or ONE call somewhere/anywhere from Robin silencing you as he did last game but it wasn't meant to be. Instead we have you frantically running your fingers across the keyboard like Liberace fresh out of a 3 hour sojourn in a Greenwich village bathhouse.

I’m 73 hrs old and have been a dire fan since my freshman year in 1968 and I thank Father Shanley everyday for giving me something to cheer for win or lose! This was a great game and I believe this is what we have to look forward to for the next 6 years or longer! Pitino is where he belongs and God willing he will give us the big prize before I leave this place!

Yea cause creighton was playing at home. Listen it’s nothing new to see a team get rattled in a tough road environment, I just think some of our guys handled it poorly, and it wasn’t due to a lack of opportunities to get comfortable/produce IMO.

Jenkins was bad in the first half today, (as was much of our team in the first half) but I think cherry picking the 17 shots in this one is so lazy cause it was so situational. Creighton was literally sagging off of our guards trying to force them to take mid ranges.

Daniss was taking what the defense was giving him, he just wasn’t hitting. so we tried to work in dingle and Alleyne down the stretch. But they looked scared

But it’s tough to just go away from daniss when he personally stopped every creighton run today with a timely shot. Then he hit the biggest shot of the game for us, a 3 to put us up by 2 late.

His usage was too high today, but when he shows the capability to hit big shots, and no one else steps up and does the same, it’s probably hard for Rick to want to put the ball in someone else’s hands.

It sucks but I do get it.

As for the solution. Moving forward, shin splints or not, I think Luis should have the ball and be attacking
For the season Jenkins averages 13 shots a game to score 12.9 points a game.
For his ST John’s career Ponds averaged 15 shots a game to average 19.5.
And Ponds wasn’t playing with an all league big.

Hardy in senior year took 13 shots a game to average 18.3. And again no Soriano type on that team.

Hatten for his career averaged 18 shots a game to score 21.2. Again no one close to Soriano on his team.

Jenkins taking on the Hatten, Ponds, Hardy role when he is nowhere as good as those theee, plus there is a better player on his team shooting 60%.

And is Dingle struggling so much because the adjustment in moving up in level of play? Or because his point guard is a chucker?

While the refs were certainly a big factor yesterday, the reality is we put up a “stinker” at Creighton. When you miss 7 of your last 8 shots in a close game, how can you expect to win, I’ll say it again, while the defense has progressed, even with Joel seemingly out if position too often, the offense (and some players confidence) has regressed.

Yes yes yes
Sure big disparity in fouls especially at end
But who had a big game?
Also Silly fouls

I agree but don't believe Jenkins is making them scared. I have no idea what practices are really like or what Pitino tells them before or during games, but I get a sense that other than Jenkins & Soriano everyone is playing a bit scared that Pitino will yank them for one bad play and they don't want to screw up.

We're basically halfway through season and Dingle cannot be happy with his limited ability to show his offense. Guy was talked about with NBA scouts and he's playing scared. Have to wonder if he regrets his decision.
I do wish he would play 30 minutes one game and let’s see what he does. He stuck a few in the 1st half a then we took him out. He is a rhythm player who is not used to coming out every few minutes.

Aside from the last two possessions (Creighton and ours) where I'm convinced that both Jenkins (bowled over going for long rebound) and Dingle (bumped hardas he went up for final shot) were fouled, referees gave Creighton a huge advantage by handing them 2 fouls to give on our final possession.

Breaking it down, I'd be much less upset if they made Creighton earn their final 2 points by being consistent and  not putting them on the line for two free throws.

As it stands, even if we had 20 seconds, Creighton could have wound the clock down by giving those fouls. Unforgiveable advantage. We could made a weak argument that Jenkins get a continuation shooting in the act on the second foul, which refs have called a lot this year.

I was hoping that Jenkins would find Soriano when Kalkbrenner jumped out to guard him on his final attempt. Even there if we had 1-2 more seconds Jenkins would have opted for that.

Bottom line: right now we are a good team, not a very good, and not a great team. We deservedly had high hopes that a win would help our March hopes enormously, but at face value we pushed a very good Creighton team to the max on their home court.

Was a little puzzled why Luis wasn't on floor at end, but oh well.

Onward.

It was a close game because Creighton missed a ton of open looks, especially from 3. Can't count on that next time we play them. Need to defend the 3 better and get more players involved. Like others, strange to see Taylor not shooting the ball. As for Joel, he was by far the tallest man on the court for a lot of the earlier games. That helped him to look dominant. RK is 2 inches taller than Joel and knows how to play. Joel started slow but had a good second half. Still, he seemed a bit tired the last few games.

I didn't DVR the game since Dish still doesn't carry Fox. In real time, Jenkins looked like he was tackled after the missed Creighton shot late in the game. Can anyone who has seen it more than once confirm it was a blatant foul?

Solid post

It was not a mere coincidence that Creighton “missed a ton of open looks”.

The Johnnies were successful in speeding up Creighton. So yes, StJ’s must tighten up their defense for the rematch but no one should believe that the StJ’s players were not playing hard and that the Creighton misses were because its players had a off day.

If the offense continues to be Jenkins dominant we won’t make the tournament.
There is zero statistical proof that it makes sense for him to play that role.

He didn’t play that role at Iona.
Although despite splitting ball handling duties, Jenkins managed to jack up more shots than Clayton despite the fact that Clayton was a better shooter, more efficient and averaged more per game.
