But at least half the crowd were Providence fans, no? But agree with you completely on the MSG games, only 4 conference games there just doesn't cut it.
It was not half Providence fans. More like 70%/30% pro SJU.

The board of trustees -- or at least some subset of the board--would have had to ultimately sign off on it. Shanley's on the board and he's president of the University. No way does an expenditure that big happen without his say so.Who gave him the extension ?
No way were half the fans providence. Not even close. 70-80% SJU would be my guessBut at least half the crowd were Providence fans, no? But agree with you completely on the MSG games, only 4 conference games there just doesn't cut it.
I was there. Half the crowd was not Providence fans. I would say about 30% were. Not half, but still too much. But at least half the crowd were Providence fans, no? But agree with you completely on the MSG games, only 4 conference games there just doesn't cut it.
Just posted that same percentages before I saw your post.It was not half Providence fans. More like 70%/30% pro SJU.
Ok, TV commentators called it a 50-50 crowd. Glad to hear that was not the case.No way were half the fans providence. Not even close. 70-80% SJU would be my guess
No question. He was fooling around on the bench , during timeouts etcI think we gotta get curbelo away from the team bench if we want any hope of Posh playing well, right?
He got roasted plenty in Ark. Few were sorry to see him go. For some strange reason, our fan base thought that because "he had something to prove", he'd be a different coach here then the one that got fired from Arkansas. Well the fan base was partly right, he has been a lot different here then he was at Arkansas, where he had some success. Unfortunately he's had no success here.He would've been roasted in Arkansas as well, if not worst, due to their fan base, their basketball history, and being the only "game in town."
HimselfAnyone talked to Mike Francesa at the game yesterday?
The way I see it, this program has 2 things to sell recruits right now; NYC and MSG. The only people who care about our (ancient) history, Louie, Mullin, etc etc etc are our geriatric fan base, including me. Kids today could care less about any of that, but they do care a lot about MSG. Take that away and you've removed not only an important part of our brand, but also maybe our most important recruiting tool.Saturday night games are probably the best to bring in a crowd, especially a family crowd.
Unfortunately, MSG already has plans for Saturday nights, so we don't get to do it too often. Hardley ever, there. Just another reason why that building does us little good.
Zach reporting that Curbelo came to the media room. Zach asked if he was till on the team and Curbelo said yes. Zach asked why he was suspended and Curbelo said “you tell me.” What’s he doing in the media room?
Seriously, someone said it a few weeks back but it’s so true, I’ve been on these boards for 20 years and without a doubt the best times (mood, energy, excitement, positivity) has been when we are in the midst of a coaching search/new hire.
I think the recent engagement is just the sense of excitement creeping in that soon we will again be in the market for a new coach. And for a few months, or at least as long as it takes for them to prove they won’t be the chosen one to turn this dormant program around, all will be right in st. John’s fandom
We drew well there last saturday at noon.
If you want to project big time you live in a nice house not a trailer
The kids want to get paid as much as they can. That's all they care about - and I can't blame them. The way I see it, this program has 2 things to sell recruits right now; NYC and MSG. I would love to know when Sleepy Floyd said that. Would you happen to recall ?I remember a quote from Sleepy Floyd about playing against us, paraphrasing. "We knew exactly what they were going to do, but they execute so well we could not stop them."
Sometimes have to give credit to the opposition, as Creighton does this very well.
Yeah, but they can get paid more playing on Broadway then they can playing in Jamaica. The kids want to get paid as much as they can. That's all they care about - and I can't blame them.
Let’s put it this way-if we are the home crowd and it SOUNDS like a 50-50 crowd it is about 98% St J and 2% visiting team.Ok, TV commentators called it a 50-50 crowd. Glad to hear that was not the case.
20+ years we been sleeping giants, I guess in another few years we'll finally be considered a dead giant never to awaken ever again,GC....I believe the SJUBB fan base can still be considered a sleeping giant. However, as previously stated, the clock is ticking. We are on the cusp of losing a significant portion of that base due to age. Take a look at the lower seat back section at Carnesecca (season ticket holders). I am guessing it is somewhere near 50-60% senior citizens. We need an exciting tournament run that will engage younger fans and later produce feelings of nostalgia. Most of our fan base is kicking around for just a taste of the "good old days".
+1000This should not be glossed over. Like many here, I am at every game and I am currently puzzled (happily) by the stronger than expected attendance. In past years, considering our record and uninspired play, this game would not have drawn the crowd that it did.
A tired notion, but if we ever got this program going, it could be a lot of fun.
cannot remember the year, but was in the Washington Post I believe, where I lived in DC at the time. It is almost exactly what he said, specifically about our ability to execute.I would love to know when Sleepy Floyd said that. Would you happen to recall ?
In 1981-82 they absolutely destroyed us and in 80-81 we were a nothing special NIT team.
I can’t see him having said that but would be glad to be wrong.
NYC helps with the kids, but I don't think it helps with the parents. They tend to want their kids to leave NYC, and in the end, they compromise on places like Seton Hall and Rutgers, which are near NYC, but far enough away that it feels like a different world. The way I see it, this program has 2 things to sell recruits right now; NYC and MSG. how well you think Seton Hall would recruit playing all their home games in Walsh ? Bottom line just win and fans will comeNYC helps with the kids, but I don't think it helps with the parents. MSG probably does help, but the recruits eventually realize that we won't pack the place, and they can always play there at the Big East Tournament, or an early season event, so they transfer out. It's probably not a net positive in the end.
