Creighton Game

On a normal Duke day, when they are in the middle of a second half run, calls go their way. Now throw in the Coach K angle.

And don't think for one second the refs were oblivious to the magnitude of the game. They knew what a win meant.

Stinks, because that could have halted some momentum and extended the game a bit. However, in the end I still think Duke wins because of its depth.

Lavin's tweets/Facebook posts are the worst of them all. He is starting to sound worse than Norm did.

Example:

@SJUCoachLavin: We went up against a top-5 team today and came up short. We’ll learn from it but clearly we are a team moving in the right direction. #SJUBB

Meanwhile in reality we have dropped 5/7 and blown double digit second half leads in the last two losses. How does that indicate "moving in the right direction"?

He should worry more about Jordan not fouling guys shooting three pointers than if he's tweeting because the foul he committed on the three point attempt with the shot clock winding down against Duke was a killer.

Foul certainly was killer, but it also wasnt a foul. How the reff standing 3 feet away doesnt see the duke player kick his leg 3 feet out is unbelievable. Then again it was while duke was making a run, dont want to get coach K upset with you.

True. Sheed never touched him. It was a flop.

Avon doesn't see it that way, it's Lavin's fault.

Opponent: Creighton
Date: January 28th, Wednesday
Time: 9PM Eastern
Venue: CenutryLink Center

I'm sure most are aware of creighton and their season so far.

They actually had a pretty good non conference, they were even ranked in the top 25 at one point. But since then they are 0-8 in big east conference play, with heartbreaking losses to Marquette and seton hall. Providence beat them twice fairly easily. Their coming off a loss at villanova where they got blown out.

Looking at their roster, on paper this is a great match up for us probably the best we will see in the big east. They are probably the least athletic team in the big east and we are probably one of if not the most athletic team in the big east. But whether we use that to our advantage or not will be seen.

Key for SJU is to just control to tempo, I'd push it like they did against duke, only difference is if we do it instead of a 10 point lead I could see is up by 20+ and not leave any chance of a comeback.

Also, defend the 3, their big men aren't that athletic, so Amar and CO should hold their own down there for most of the game, so make the rest of the guards watch the perimeter.

As much as I like the matchup on paper, DLo still has a lot of question marks surrounding his health, and there is a ton of pressure for Creighton to finally get a big east win against their home fans.

All in all, I think we control the tempo and win this one. If we don't control the tempo and it becomes a halfcourt game we will be in for another grind it out close win or loss.

SJU 72
Creighton 55

I agree with your assessment, Jack. The only thing I'll add is that the two times I've seen them play, they could not buy a 3---even e wide open ones. Last year, they were very dangerous from 3. Even with losing McDermott, i thought they would be dangerous from deep. Of course, we've allowed teams/players to have career games against us. Hopefully, we don't let that happen tomorrow night.

Can we play a solid second half? Trend is killing us.

More like the last 10minutes.
Had a 2pnt lead with 10 to go. 10pnt lead with 8 to go vs. Duke. Damn what could have been.
Nova was #4 I believe, and Duke was #5. Winning both of those would have boostedour chance big time of making the ncaa.
Instead now we're sweating it out.

I disagree, unfortunately. While I haven't watched the game on DVR, where I can rewind and double-check, when I saw the replays during the gave, it was looked to me like Jordan's forearm hit the shooter in the face.
They replayed it during the game. The shooter kicked out his right leg. Jordan jumped across in front of him to swipe at the shot. He got a piece of it but also came down straight across the guy's extended leg and knocked him down. 3-point shooters have been doing that for years and they usually get the call. If Jordan hadn't turned his back on his man to think about helping on Tyus Jones the guy never would have been wide open for a three in the first place and he wouldn't have been trying to recover from the side for the block. A defensive lapse at a very bad moment. One of several down the stretch.

Do we know Harrison's status? 80%? 90%?

What's up w/ the shoulder?

Very tough spot tomorrow. They could've beaten the hall. They did beat Oklahoma. This is probably the worst road trip in the big east.

Creighton will be playing without Isaiah Zierden, who is out for the season with an injury. That will hurt them in the depth department, as he was logging some major minutes up until last week.

Tonight's game makes me nervous. I know on paper, and based on how I've seen Creighton play, and with the injured Zierden, we should kill them. But this is just the kind of game that we have lost in the past. Plus, Creighton is looking for their first BE win this year.

I do not like this game tonight. This game tonight I do not like.

I agree. Let's see how we come out. I have a feeling tonight DLo might get back on track, I said that before the duke game though :cheer:

It is critically important to get this win & then hold serve v PC, who will have a short turnaround after playing Thursday. Lose these two and I'm sure we will hear crazy prognostications about "We can still win the BE Tourney". Unlike UConn we don't have Kemba Walker. It is damn time for this veteran team to step up and beat Creighton tonight. Always tough on the road in BE, but successful teams win games like tonight. Do it!
