Creighton Game #2

Huge win. I might be eating some serious crow soon. Still much to do but this was a huge win.

Hey GMan, I really love eating some "SWEET F`ING CROW", it tastes real good.
I went to the Garden, and my voice is gone.

hahaha 6-1 since saying I`ll be back in march, superstition is a crazy thing. You keep doing the same thing and your team keeps winning, you start feeling that you`re helping them.
So after tonight I`ll disappear again.

We're finally here boys !! The team I have been dreaming about since the summer. We still have a lot of work to do but I think we can take care of seton hall. One game at a time but the game I am worried about I'd gtown. I think we can beat hall and even nova on the road but gtown seems to always have our number. Still, one game at a time . Hall is next to loose , we look scary right now , nobody is going to want to play us in the big east tourney!!! SJU forever !!!!!!! Lets get it !!!

just got home! was at the game then went out with some buddies to celebrate. Cant say how proud i am of this team, they have really turned the cornerand are showing what they are really capable of. I was very critical of coach and staff when we were playing bad and i will gladly eat crow now because he preached February and they are showing it now. Man these embodied New York tonight!! they got down and dirty tonight!!! Gutsy!!!

2-0 week vs PC and Creighton well done fellas!! From 9-8 to 15-9. This week is a bit tricky. We left ourselves no margin for error.

Heading into this past week we were only 3 games out of 3rd place. Even at 3-6 we were 3 games out. Now at 5-6 we are 1.5 behind Xavier for what I believe is a coveted 3rd spot. I get that it's still a long shot but we have made great strides and have played ourselves at least into the discussion as a bubble team.

some quotes:

That makes one wonder how much better the Red Storm will be in a month when the conference teams gather in the Garden for the league tournament. Doug McDermott, for one, wants a chance to see.

“St. John’s is a really good team,” he said. “They’re dangerous. They’re competing a lot harder than they were to start the year. We know there’s a chance we’ll see them again, and we just need to get back to Omaha and get back to work.”

Just bringing the defensive effort last night into full view, this is a team that is an offensive machine. 23rd in the country in points (80.5 per game), 2nd in assists, 12th in FG%. The stuff they run in the half-court is as good and as hard to guard as I've seen in a long time.

Holding a team like this to 65 is an achievement in its own right. But they had 18 in the first 5 minutes. Holding them to 47 over the final 35 minutes is on another planet. We defended at a higher level last night than we have at any point all season and that's the primary reason we won the game. If we bring the same intensity and effort and relentlessness on that end of the court against lesser teams than Creighton, this streak is going to keep rolling.

Good game by all but Sampson has to be singled out for a hellaciouos defensive performance; absolutely as good as it gets. When you play D they way we are now those offensive droughts just don't take you out of the game. Keep playing D, share the ball!! Now on to the next biggest game of the year - SHU.

Oh my! The new Obekpa and the offensive game he was not allowed by his fellow redmen all last year while I was screaming to give him touches continues to improve but at what cost? In the Creigthon game Obekpa with zero Oblockpas?
Great effort by all the kids that are now finally starting to play as a team rather than watching D'LO hoist bombs that usually missed their targets.  Congrats to Lavin for sitting him during periods that he tried to become the one man offense last night to cool his jets.
Also, kudos to Lav for continuing to bring El Primo off the bench while translating the on-going plays as he watches and learns.  He may yet understand that St. John's needs him to rebound and play closer than 30 feet from the basket for him to be an effective contributor to his team. Stay tuned for his interview on radio Dominicana.
As for Creighton and their fans, we at SJ will take pleasure in kicking your ass for years to come but they got 1,000 fans to the game and some Johnnie fans were too scared by the 2 inch snow prediction to venture on the subway! What a bunch of pussies! Then again, maybe they chose to go stand in line at the Ed Sullivan theatre for the Beatles 50th anniversary happening. BTW, those Creighton fans never have entertainment options like that within walking distance in Omaha. It's the Blue Jays or blue balls sitting home with the wife. Take note Syracuse fans when playing the great ACC teams like Clemson, BC, VaTech, Miami, GaTech, etc. at the Dome after the Duke game. No record crowds for those games in the near future or next 20 years.
Next must win game is Seton Hall who will be hungry and desperate. Hammer them at the Rock and even Moose and Lawmanfan may become fans again!

If you recall Creighton game 1, Sampson made a huge stop on McDermott in the play immediately preceding the three point shot by McDermott that won the game. I wondered why he wasn't guarding McDermott on that play. I'd also thought the strategy should be deny the ball last night , and rotate multiple guys on him. That is exactly what we did, and by far Sampson was up the task of hawking McDermott on the perimeter, and being quick enough not the get beat on drives to the hoop. It seems that aside from the 1 three point shot, every one of McDermott's baskets came on isolations less then 5 feet from the basket.

@LAVINWOOD: Mediocre attendance of 6,739 people for last night's game. Fans need to start showing up. This team deserves it right now. #sjubb

100% accurate. The thing is, fans are missing some really good basketball, and will only spend money once we climb into the top 20. By then they will have missed some really good games.

I bet MSG gets 10K next Sunday, esp if STJ handles its business against S Hall. Pres Day the next day, and Gtown has a decent following and alumni in NYC.

He had 1 or 2 wide open threes too, that would have broke the game open. In and out, next time they go down

As one very pissed off SJU fan told me, "I'm not going to spend $65 to watch Lavin start Felix and walk-on".

Well, that fan has missed a lot of very good basketball.

I think Sunday will be better. Georgetown obviously has their own following, but the buzz we'll get this week (hopefully with another win thrown in) should give us a bump in attendance. Lavin is on with Francesca today, that'll help. All the papers have been getting on board, so hopefully it gets people's attention.
