Creighton Game #2

the only negative was the crowd. blame can be made for the 7pm sunday start. however it was very loud but the arena was more than half empty. most were st. john's fans though and the noise was similar to the georgetown game at home in 2011. i can't say it was as loud as the pitt game though.

Just read a tweet that McDermott made a layup with 8:41 left and didn't take another shot the rest of the game
GREAT D!!!!!

Thought it sounded loud on TV ... at least on mine.

I am very proud of the way they played after that fast start by Creighton.
Then we had that down period with a few questionable calls, the fouls mounting, Rysheed to the bench, then
Sampson to the bench, a few minutes later the "flagrant" foul on "O" that costs us the ball, and the free throws and Creighton's ball post free throws. We lost the eternal review on the reversal of the Out of Bounds play involving Harrison. But each and every setback was met not by resignation or lashing out but reaching in and finding the will to fight harder to defend even better. It was a major growth to come away with the win not because someone else lost it, but because you made the plays to take it. Very proud of the spirit they showed.

Excellent point, redmaninalbay. They came out flaming: making something like 7 out of their first 8 shots. Could have set us back on our heels, but we kept responding. Again, great win ... and let's hope the roll continues!

dlo was great down the stretch .. hit big 3 then all the fts to close it out the kid stepped up big.. and Sampson was unreal on D what a effort by the team

Coach McD Gave Coach Lavin a mans hand shake and there was a nice exchange. It was worthy of a good game and nice to see.

Wonderful win, the team has much to be proud of! Let's keep it up against Seton Hall. Amazing that Mcdermott scores 25 and it's considered an excellent defensive effort. Goes to show how much of a factor he is!

GREAT D!!!!!

The D by Sampson was very good. Sanchez, surprisingly, played him well too! I've been killing the way they played screens and how they switched for three years, but the communication today on the switches was unreal. Dom played McDermott tough, but he was just too big and skilled down low. Nearly all of McDermott's shots were tough and challenged. He's just so adept at getting the ball off a pass and instantly getting to a point were he can safely release it. Creighton is one of the best screening teams in the country...so well coached.

The one negative I can say is that they did give up some open looks late that were luckily all misses. That was really due to the focus on McDermott, though.
Offensively, the shooting of Jordan, Branch, and Pointer is pretty brutal. If those guys are at least average jump shooters, we win by ten + today.

The key to this season will obviously be defense, but personnel-wise, we go from being a tough team to being downright scary if Pointer-Sanchez-Greene are focused and committed to their proper roles. To hit that next gear, I think Branch needs to become a bigger part of the offense as well. I just love the kid'sslow, controlled, herky-jerky drives that suck in the entire defense. He does a great job drawing contact and his misses are almost always offensive boards.

On the train home. Great D by Sampson the last 10 minutes. Crowd was not huge but really into the game. Nice finishing by Dlo. Thank God they were missing on their 3s!

D'Lo has the ability to disappear for most of the game, then have the stones to throw up a game saving 3, while the defender was distracted by Karr possibly setting a screen, and knock down his FTs. Incredible

Thanks for being there! You're presence made a difference.

Just got back from the game. That was fun! This game is the reason to be a season ticket holder. Much better atmosphere (and cheaper) than any regular season NBA game.

Feels so good, after how many close losses, to pull one out.

That Harrison three is the prime example of a shot we couldn't hit earlier this year.

And how about the smiles on Jordan's, Jakarr, obekpas faces after the game. This meant so much to them, and I can't imagine how happy they are on the bus ride back to queens.

Creighton board blaming the refs, you know what, welcome to the Big East. They still got some bs calls. Obekpa flagrant and out of bounds call on Harrison.

Let's just kill seton hall and get ready to continue the revenge tour.

2-0 on this revenge streak, on to Georgetown after the opportunity for our first sweep of the season.

Also, can get to 6-6 in the big east if we win. Which is great, considering the 0-5 start

Just looking at the box score now.

Creighton 5-22 from three (22.7%)
14-25 from FT line for 56%...

Laving's game plan worked again.
Subtracting McDermott's 10-18, the rest of the team shot 13 for 38, or 34%

Interestingly, we had only 2 blocks.. i guess they really are a jump shooting team.

The Harrison shot was more than what it appeared on the surface. He called for the screen...it was an option play. He sold the screen to his defender, and when the kid turned his head he drained the three. If he didn't turn his head, I'd bet anything Harrison was curling off it to launch a three. Great play for us in any event, but it was just one of the many advanced things I saw the last few games out of our guys.

Wins @SH and against Gtown will put our RPI in the 30's.

I don't think it was a matter of disappearing as much as him deferring to his teammates and playing within the offense. He's a really smart player and he wasn't completely on with his jumper tonight. When he "forced" his shots in the past it was because we had nothing else, and both he and the staff knew that anything he could get semi-open was our best chance. That wasn't the case tonight, like a bunch of other times this season.
I thought he did a great job spreading the ball around. Every single time he touches the ball, it puts stress on the defense. Zero turnovers too.

NY Post reporting the following: St. John’s hosted Cheick Diallo, a consensus top 10 junior in the country out of Our Savior New American on Long Island, which was Obekba’s high school.

Hey, can't hurt!

We needed a signature win in the worst way. Great game. Didn't buckle after the slow start and withstood our infamous 2nd half dry spell to grit this one out.

I rake him over the coals after each game so it's only right for me to give him props: Phil Greene played a damn good game. Probably his best decision making of his career penetrating and dropping it off to Dom for the and-1.

Congrats to Lavin on #200.

Glad we knocked off a ranked team with the 10th ranked player in the nation watching in the arena in Diallo and a kid with a ton of upside in McDuffie.

The wins are picking up and so is the recruiting.

No letdown on Thursday. They need to walk into Newark with this same kind of winner's mentality and just stomp Seton Hall.

Leggo!
