We were out doing a bunch of family stuff today so I didn’t watch or even check the score on my phone. I just went online a few minutes ago.
Oh my! What a great win.

I think there is a correlation btw our lousy big east starts and our awful non-conference scheduleI am in the Dominican Republic for a family wedding weekend. I spent the morning figuring out how to stream this game and of course the Giant/Viking playoff game later. Honestly I was very pessimistic and was questioning my wisdom about watching the game at all. I really despise UConn more than just about any other team, but after I saw them destroy Alabama (currently #4) and Iowa State (currently #14) I thought they were a strong national championship contender and could possibly go undefeated in Big East play. Even with their recent defeats, I did not see how a team, like us, that was blown out by Villanova and Seton Hall on the road was going to be competitive going up to Connecticut to play the Huskies. Well I was obviously way wrong.
This is why you have to let a season play out. Under CMA we have had terrible starts to our Big East seasons. I don't know why we always start off our Big East seasons so slow, but the surprising turnaround seems to always happen at some point. I was just as surprised by UConn's poor play today, as I was by our good play. Soriano had five more points and just two less rebounds than the UConn twin towers of Sanogo and Clingan had combined. Storr and Pinzon were very solid and the team defense was really good. UConn was very undisciplined, careless with the ball and other than Hawkins shot terribly.
This is why I personally can not get on board with making absolutely definitive global statements about how great or how awful we are. I grant you that we were absolutely awful against Seton Hall, Villanova and Iowa State and really bad for the first thirty minutes of the Xavier game. That said there are typically ebbs and flows to a basketball season. Before today, I had a low level hope that we would turn the season around and do something worthwhile. That hope level has definitely been raised some today, but it certainly could go right back down again with a poor effort against Villanova on Friday.
BTW if someone would have told me at the start of the week that SJU would beat nationally ranked UConn by double digits this week, I would have definitely thought that would have been the Wednesday Women's game at UBS Arena that the someone was referencing.
I’m in the same boat as you Kranmars. But it does get tiresome to see the same posters spout negative comments about our guys, the coach, the AD, the President of the University , etc etc. Legit criticism is fair game. But many of the comments from posters go beyond that and are personal attack. Sometimes we lose sight of the players especially in that they are young men not making millions of dollars a year.
It’s a game we should win…Nova is a winnable game
Thanks so much for the informationCatch FS1 replay at midnight est
BINGO!!!!44-28 point edge for points in paint for SJ, game changer. Hopefully players realize excessive three point attempts is not a team strength
Weak schedule never gets us readyIt’s just vexing that in each of coach’s years here we’ve dug ourselves very deep holes in conference. Not sure why but it’s very hard to overcome.
Initially, I was just hoping they could cover the 14-point spread. I do think it helped to play them in the Hartford Arena, instead of their loud campus gym.Straight out of Ripley’s believe it or not, SJU missed 14 FTs and shot 15% from 3, yet still won by double digits at a facility they haven’t won in 35 years.
In any other circumstance you would say that and presume that the winner had to be a much better team than the loser.Straight out of Ripley’s believe it or not, SJU missed 14 FTs and shot 15% from 3, yet still won by double digits at a facility they haven’t won in 35 years.
Kudos to CMA for his decision to move Jones and Curbelo to bench…not an easy decision given their talents…props to Jones for not sulking.. hopefully he finds himself and plays within team concept at which time he can be a starter again.Gotta give Anderson credit for juggling the line up, starting with pc game, and getting Pinzon minutes off the bench. Bringing Curbelo and Jones off the bench has also been effective. I think Jones can still be an important part of the team if he embraces his new role. Mike also showed he has flexibility when he started Pinzon in the second half and left Stanley on the bench, turns out almost all the player moves he made worked. He also has some of these guys on a shorter leash than earlier in the year, not tolerating bad shots and/or lackluster d.
The rematch should be a real rock fight.Great quotes:
"It's a good day to be a Johnnie," coach Mike Anderson said. "I thought our guys had been trending in the right direction and today, we put 40 minutes together."
"Their program was a lot tougher than our program today and I didn't see it coming." UConn coach Dan Hurley said. "We looked weak and unprepared. They were just way tougher."
The big difference in storrs and hartford is that you have about 7,000 more PBR fueled lunatics in xl.Initially, I was just hoping they could cover the 14-point spread. I do think it helped to play them in the Hartford Arena, instead of their loud campus gym.
