Coaching Changes

Sources: Rutgers reached out to URI officials Saturday to speak with Danny Hurley. GW's Mike Lonergan also a top RU target.

Really don't wan't Danny Hurley poking around here.

Feel like Danny is going to be strategic about his next move. The Rutgers job is a real uphill battle. If he pushes all the right buttons, they will still spend the next two years in the Big 10 basement.

My guess is he does not leave URI for Rutgers.

He probably wants out of URI. He's the highest paid state employee and he's not even the best college coach in that tiny state. His URI record is under 500 with a 4th season that took a few steps in the wrong direction from his one post season - an NIT year.

He has not done well there.

In his defense he had built a roster at URI that was good enough to be a top 25 team this year, but injuries to I think three of his best players stopped that from happening

Matt Brady out at James Madison. Team went 40-25 the last two years. Tough business.

I always thought he was a pretty good coach, especially since he's had one tough job and a second one where it's hard to differentiate yourself from about 10 similar schools. At the very least, he shouldn't have much trouble finding an assistant job.

Hassan only missed 6 games, Kuran 4. Not sure who you're third is but it wasn't really roster depletion that hurt them.

Their star EC Matthews was injured in early in November and shelved for season.

The third player was E C Matthews, the best player on the team and the Pre- season pick for A10 Player of the Year. He got hurt in the very first game. Considering what he had to work with, Hurley did a very good job.
Matthews, whom many scouts considered a sure pro, was hurt in the very first game of the year.

Got it, don't remember him. However that's one player, if they were a one man team doesn't say much for Dan's coaching. Both Hassan and especially Kuran were mentioned with big name teams during their recruitment. Of course when players like that end up in the A10 there's usually a reason.

Fran F;

"Hate to disappoint Va Tech fans, but logical move for TCU & Oklahoma State is to get Buzz Williams-quickly. TCU job fits like a glove."

Makes sense with his roots in those areas working Juco circuit.

Full respect on your opinion and appreciate the good points on injuries. It's still not a successful four year run and it'd be a shame to see another coach take a bigger job off unfinished work. On the other hand who am I to knock him if RU increases his pay day by 1 million a year or so.

One thing I will say, after questioning the merits of his consideration, is that NJ has become quite a hotbed of talent and having a guy named Hurley in NJ recruiting NJ for a chance to play in the B1G10 could be quite appealing to a B1G 10 school in NJ.

BREAKING: Stanford has fired Johnny Dawkins, source told @CBSSports.

Tougher than most jobs because of the academic restrictions, but it's an awesome place to be. If their standards were lower it would be one of the top jobs in the country.

For their sake I hope the new coach can resume the tradition of getting giant twin brothers to come and play in front of a tree.

I think if you are at least 6'10", have a twin, and live in California you are probably obligated by state law to commit to Stanford.

David and Travis Wear (UNC then UCLA) broke that law.

I'd argue it already is one of top jobs in country. They made 13/14 NCAA tourneys before Dawkins arrived. if the football team can be a perennial top 10 team under multiple coaches with all the players they need, the basketball should be able to and has been able to sustain comparable success. Going to be a lot of interest in that job. Wonder if a fellow Duke tommy a maker can parlay his success at Harvard Into the Stanford job...if he wants to move. Gotta wonder how many of these coach k disciples are just biding their time for the Duke job too since there is no clear cut choice.

Wonder where Johnny goes from here. If Capel leaves Duke for a HC job I could see Johnny resuming his former position temporarily. Wonder if any big time schools take a shot at him with 1/8 NCAA appearances (but two NIT titles) while at Stanford (but a ridiculously high graduation rate).

Regarding Amaker, doubt Stanford would go for another Dukie at this time ... especially with his having failed big time at Michigan.

my brother suffered the only loss of his senior year against the collins twins in the state championship game. It's tough for a 6'5 center to guard 2 7 foot centers.
