Coaching Changes

Tubby Smith has agreed, in principle, to become the coach at Memphis
Formal announcement coming soon, as per Gary Parrish

Interesting hire. He is now 64 years old and coming off lackluster stints at Minnesota and Texas Tech. Seems like a good guy, but if I were a Memphis fan I would be underwhelmed with the choice.

AD must have felt he needed a name.

Winning 61% of your games at Minny is lackluster?

That is one way to look at it. But, in six years, he also never finished above .500 within his conference.

I don't think he is a bad coach. Just saying that, if I were a Memphis fan, I think I would be disappointed.

I'd take his numbers at Minnesota here over that stretch.

Lavin won 60% of his games at St. John's. B) ;)
61%>60% ;) :)

Winning at all at Texas Tech is lackluster?

He didn't win at Texas Tech. Total record was below .500 for his his three years there.

Wow.....didn't know there were so many Tubby supporters here. Again, not saying he is a bad coach. Just saying (to me) it's a "ho-hum" hire for Memphis.

It's all relative TT is a pretty awful program, he got them to the dance. At TT that's an accomplishment.

Bobby Knight was 138-82 in seven seasons at Texas Tech, including four NCAA and one NIT appearances. Won 20+ games in five of those seven seasons at that "awful program." (Then again, he was Bobby Knight.)

Bobby Knight's in a whole different league.

Except it was James Dickey who took TT to the Sweet 16.

Latest from the UNLV circus: Chris Beard, who has been the coach for all of six days, is the number one choice of Texas Tech to replace Tubby Smith. They will double Beard's UNLV salary. Beard's price to get out of current contract is reportedly one million. Coaches gone wild.

If you don't count the 2nd year. Yes.

I've said it before. All it took was one more NCAA appearance and Lavin would still be here

Okay, but if Mullin doesn't do better than Tubby in conference, my guess is you will be in the minority.

I really have no ax to grind against Tubby.

Always liked Tubby. Raw deal at unrealistic Kentucky and underrated in many respects.

Beard just took the UNLV job and is now talking to Texas Tech
He was an assistant there for 10 years under Bob & Pat Knight
He also has family in the area
As you stated, I'm sure the doubling of his salary sweetened the pot as well

I guess one option would be not to withdraw from the draft.

The Plastic Man legitimately wants the job because he loves the school, not just because he's an NBA coach who doesn't feel like being unemployed. Give it to him. It's not like he could make the place a worse mess than it is right now.

Or give it to Lavin.

Handing the program off to a former star player has worked in places like Iowa State.

Marvin Menzies, with a strong recommendation from Pitino, seen as favorite. Others mentioned are Karl, Lavin, and former UNLV assistant, Ryan Miller. These searches keep getting worse. It started with Pitino, then Jaime Dixon. on to Mick Cronin, ending, it seemed, with Chris Beard. One report said Lavin was not interviewed because some important UCLA person called the dopey UNLV AD, and blasted Lavs. School president, another dope, is also fully engaged in the search. At least he's not embezzling school money. The AD was the former cheerleader coach.
I remember Pitino pushing Bobby Gonzo for SJU job, indicating it was his "dream job."

While not an NCAA coaching change, Kenny Atkinson is the new coach of the Nets
I coached against him when he was a kid growing up in Northport (Long island)
Good luck Kenny - you've got your work cut off for you in Brooklyn - hope you succeed

Do you know if he played for SJU's Gus Alfieir at St. Anthony's H.S. ??? Thank you.

If my failing memory serves me correctly, he did

He did play for Alfieri at St. Anthony's -- I played with Kenny at Northport HS. Mark Redman - where did you coach?

Brentwood - late 70's into mid 80's
Coached against George Franck and Rich Castellano at Northport
