Coaching Changes

Stony Brook names OSU assistant Jeff Boals as new head coach.

He looks more like a physics professor than a basketball coach
I wish him well - I thought Jay Young should have gotten the job

It's being reported that Young will be going to Rutgers with Pikiell. I'm assuming he chose this path after not getting the job at Stony Brook.

Yes, I also heard they are trying to fill the last slot with Brandin Knight. This would be the second time Rutgers tried to lure Knight as Mike Rice tried to bring him on board when he was the Head Coach there.

Pikiell is quietly putting together an excellent staff at Rutgers
I hope he enjoys the same success there that he did at Stony Brook
Nice guy - excellent coach

Tubby Smith has reached an agreement in principle to become the next coach at Memphis
Formal announcement expected soon, as per Gary Parrish

Interesting hire. He is now 64 years old and coming off lackluster stints at Minnesota and Texas Tech. Seems like a good guy, but if I were a Memphis fan I would be underwhelmed with the choice.

AD must have felt he needed a name.

THey seem ok with it. They feel not the best hire but not the worst hire. They are hoping Penny comes in as an asst and is groomed to be there future head coach. They don't seem quite as delusional as other fan bases. They had Marshall/Buzz as their top choices which were reasonable.

Winning 61% of your games at Minny is lackluster?

That is one way to look at it. But, in six years, he also never finished above .500 within his conference.

I don't think he is a bad coach. Just saying that, if I were a Memphis fan, I think I would be disappointed.

Winning at all at Texas Tech is lackluster?

He didn't win at Texas Tech. Total record was below .500 for his his three years there.

Wow.....didn't know there were so many Tubby supporters here. Again, not saying he is a bad coach. Just saying (to me) it's a "ho-hum" hire for Memphis.

It's all relative TT is a pretty awful program, he got them to the dance. At TT that's an accomplishment.

I'd take his numbers at Minnesota here over that stretch.

Lavin won 60% of his games at St. John's. B) ;)

Okay, but if Mullin doesn't do better than Tubby in conference, my guess is you will be in the minority.

I really have no ax to grind against Tubby.

Per Parrish
Tubby Smith's contract at Memphis is five years ... $15.45 million.

I would coach in Arctic Circle for that $$$.

Bobby Knight was 138-82 in seven seasons at Texas Tech, including four NCAA and one NIT appearances. Won 20+ games in five of those seven seasons at that "awful program." (Then again, he was Bobby Knight.)
