Coaching Changes

Per Jerry Carino,
Rutgers has announced the hiring of Brandin Knight, "one of the premier young coaches in the country."

He did play for Alfieri at St. Anthony's -- I played with Kenny at Northport HS. Mark Redman - where did you coach?

Brentwood - late 70's into mid 80's
Coached against George Franck and Rich Castellano at Northport

George Franck was my coach - I graduated in '85. Played the 4. So you coached the Eversons?

Did you coach Ron Stewart, Chuck Everson (and his brother who's first name escapes me) and/or Tom Bayne?

I coached the two younger Everson brothers- Steve and Tom
Steve played college ball at Lafayette and Tom at Rutgers
I know Chuck very well but I did not coach him
Funny that Chuck's name would come up today - it's his birthday!!
He had surgery and did not play the season he would likely have played for me
I coached against George and then became the girls varsity coach later on

Ron was a 4 year varsity starter and lived on the other side of town
In those days, Brentwood had 2 varsity teams in every sport
They now have just one varsity team in every sports, like in the old days
I did coach Chuck's two younger brothers - Steve and Tom
I also coached Steve in football when he was a freshman
Tom Bayne was in high school long after I left Brentwood
I left in 1985 to become a high school principal for the next 20 years
I used to work at Rollie Massamino's camp every summer w/the Brentwood staff
Coach Mass met Chuck when he was in the 7th grade - great kid!!!
Chuck's older daughter (from Sachem East) plays hoops for D-1 Bryant University

Winning at all at Texas Tech is lackluster?

He didn't win at Texas Tech. Total record was below .500 for his his three years there.

Wow.....didn't know there were so many Tubby supporters here. Again, not saying he is a bad coach. Just saying (to me) it's a "ho-hum" hire for Memphis.

It's all relative TT is a pretty awful program, he got them to the dance. At TT that's an accomplishment.

Bobby Knight was 138-82 in seven seasons at Texas Tech, including four NCAA and one NIT appearances. Won 20+ games in five of those seven seasons at that "awful program." (Then again, he was Bobby Knight.)

Bobby Knight's in a whole different league.

Except it was James Dickey who took TT to the Sweet 16.

Sorry, didn't even think of him Bobby did too one year.

Per Rothstein;
Cal's Cuonzo Martin will hire Tim O'Toole as an assistant coach, source told @CBSSports. O'Toole was on staff at Stanford last season.

Good for Tim, former Stepinac, Fairfield U player & SJU radio guy.

Thanks for the response. After I typed the original question, based on your initial post I realized you hadn't coached Bayne.

I've run into Chuck at some basketball tournys as my daughter also played in HS. Nice guy. A lot of respect and good fillings amongst Nova and St. John's back then.

The BE use to sponsor a "BE All-Star Team' where players from different BE schools would get together and play some exhibition games in Europe. Guys use to become familiar with each other through this. Of course, Georgetown never sent anybody.

PISCATAWAY - As if the introduction of Karl Hobbs, Brandin Knight and Jay Young as Rutgers men's basketball assistant coaches wasn't enough to signal an increased level of commitment to the downtrodden program, the new teammates made the message clear Thursday with their words.

"Just the sense that I’ve gotten so far is there must be something good going on over at Rutgers," Knight said, "if guys are willing to make the kind of sacrifices that some of us have made to come join the program.”

First-year head coach Steve Pikiell hired Hobbs away from powerhouse UConn to be associate head coach and brought his right-hand man (Young) with him from upstart Stony Brook. But Knight is the staff's biggest name and that is illustrated in his paycheck.

Hobbs and Knight, a New Jersey native who previously was the lead assistant at Pittsburgh, both signed two-year contracts at an annual salary of $300,000, while Young will earn $200,000 on a one-year contract.

That accounts for the $800,000 – a pool $220,000 greater than was available to the deposed Eddie Jordan last year – that Pikiell’s contract permits for assistants. Hobbs, a former head coach at George Washington, and Pikiell both are spawns of Hall of Famer Jim Calhoun's UConn coaching tree.

"He is the most determined competitor that I’ve ever been around," Hobbs said of Pikiell. "He was that way as a player, he was that way as an assistant coach when we worked together, and he was that way as a head coach. I think that the three of us share in that dedication."

One-year contracts for senior advisor Dan Rickard ($100,000), special assistant Ben Asher ($55,000) and director of basketball operations Bryan Dougher ($55,000) push the total commitment over $1 million. Director of player development Greg Vetrone is still working on last year's contract.

In all, it is arguably Rutgers' most accomplished coaching staff of all-time.

"I just don’t know of any program that has had success without a great game plan, without a strategic plan in place," Karl Hobbs said. "I think (athletics director) Pat Hobbs has demonstrated (that) by his actions, his commitment to fundraising and the relationship that he’s developed with this entire staff. We’re overly enthusiastic and excited about the direction and the commitment."

The staff has its hands full long before Midnight Madness, trying to plug holes on a team that finished 7-25 and is left with seven scholarship players following two transfers. Star player Corey Sanders is testing the NBA Draft waters and the assistant coaches declined comment on his status.

"Obviously recruiting is a huge part of this whole thing," Knight said. "You get better players … and it obviously helps the situation. There’s a mentality that ‘do more with less’ isn’t sexy or isn’t something you can sell to recruits anymore. Kids want to see the bells and whistles."

Though Rutgers has offered no official timeline for building a new university-approved basketball practice arena with private funds, Karl Hobbs reiterated a time line that Pikiell first mentioned during an interview with WOR-710 AM radio last month.

"It’s my understanding that a groundbreaking will be sometime in June," Karl Hobbs said. "That will change the whole game plan for us in a lot of different ways."

The new staff made its first big splash on the recruiting trail Thursday, reportedly beating out Texas for the verbal commitment of Candido Sa, a 6-foot-9 forward out of junior college. Pikiell landed Roselle Catholic wing Matt Bullock's commitment just days after taking over.

"I tell everybody that I had the best seat for the last 11 years for one of the great reclamation projects in college basketball," Young said referring to Stony Brook, "and I know we can do it here again for sure."

Young said that "everything is in play," including transfers and immediately eligible graduate transfers.

"This is going to be built brick-by-brick, so there are no quick fixes here," Young said. "You’ve got to find the right people, the right students, the right players to fill these positions. Honestly, if you can’t, you’re better off leaving them open right now and making sure we get those people.

" We want to make sure that we don’t just try to do something quickly for the short term. This is a long-term thing. We’re always keeping that in mind when we’re making those decisions. I know Coach Pikiell, and we’ve all talked about that on many occasions."

BREAKING: A source tells me #Canisius head men's basketball coach Jim Baron is retiring. Has coached Griffs past four seasons.

IMO, good guy to be an AC with a developing HC if he tires of retirement.
