Coaching Carousel

Good question.

Going way back, Gary Williams left BC for Ohio State and then Maryland (won a National Championship at Maryland) and Rick Pitino (in a circuitous fashion) left Providence for the Knicks, then UK then the Celtics and then Louisville (no doubting his college success).
Sean Miller left Xavier for Arizona when Xavier was still in the A10. I get the jump from A10 to Pac10, that's huge.

Just because I don't want to tax my lazy old brain at the moment, how many Big East coaches(Crean and Willard come to mind right away) have bolted for CFB schools, and of those that bolted, how many have had success at those CFB schools?
The most recent one was Holtmann from Butler to Ohio State which is a move you can’t say no to. He’s had pretty good but not massive success there yet

I thought about Miller but stuck with guys leaving the Big East. I don’t think Amaker was very successful at Michigan.

Ben Howland left Pitt for UCLA. Dixon later did the same for TCU (his alma mater, and after they were out of the league).

Jim O'Brien left BC for Ohio State (though he fell out with the BC administration).

Matt Doherty left Notre Dame, after one year, for UNC.

Providence had a couple of guys go. Rick Barnes for Clemson, and Pete Gillen for Virginia.

Rollie left Villanova for UNLV (what was he thinking?).

I'm sure there are some other that I missed, not counting the ones mentioned earlier, like Holtnann.

But how many of those guys who bolted had success at the school they bolted to?

Historically PC has been a stepping-stone job. Cooley has changed that perception to a large degree. Another case- like Jay Wright at Nova, Louie here, etc- where a coach and a school are a perfect match.

You can add Boeheim and Syracuse to your "perfect match" list
He's been there an awfully long time, starting with his days as a player there
You're absolutely right in saying that Providence had been a stepping stone type of job
Cooley was born and raised in Providence. He has always said publicly that Providence was his dream job

Not sure about McDermott's background, but he and Creighton seem like a pretty good fit too.

And Fran, a native New Yorker, always said St. John's was his dream job ... until another one came along.

if you had the choice Anderson vs amaker who would you pick ? . Looking at smackers record past few years not great but early Harvard years not bad lol. Am I voting for amaker ummm NO
