Coaching Carousel

Kyle Neptune left the best coach in the BE for that job.

But Kimani and Van would not leave UCONN or SJU for a HC job in NYC in the A-10? Really?
Good point. I was thinking about the age element. Both those guys have 10+ years on Neptune. If they go to Fordham and don't succeed, that's probably the only HC shot they get. I think Kimani may get a better opportunity at a stronger program in due time, where there is a greater chance of success. For Van, I think there are local mid-majors that give him a better chance to be successful and have stability. Fordham is a tough job in that league. But that's also rolling the dice that those opportunities come along.

For a young guys like Neptune who wants to be a HC, even if he didn't do well at Fordham he could have caught on as a high-major assistant again and been young enough to reestablish himself for another HC opportunity.

I'd have to think Fordham reaches out to Grasso too, no?

You guys ever see something like this happen so quickly? I'm talking a headline coach retire seemingly out of nowhere, on top of the Game, with a successor named basically in the same sentence...?

A buddy of mine on the Corey Fischer teams said he heard the rumor a couple days ago- but in this day of age, stuff like this rarely stays quiet.

Or... is this just how a Professional Program handles their business lol. Just thinking that Neptune might have been told he was head coach in waiting and was told to step away to get some HC experience.

Tough loss for the conf- not sure how you can't like/respect Jay.

To get Neptune they increased their compensation package showing their willingness to compete. I wouldn’t expect anything less to bring in his replacement.

Anybody who thinks Van or Khimani would turn down an opportunity to coach Fordham to remain as assistants not sure what you are drinking...

In addition to the pay increase the idea of coaching an A-10 program in your hometown...and you are going to turn that down? For what? Because you think John Calipari is leaving and you can get the Kentucky job????? LOL!!!

In one year Kyle Neptune was being talked about as a future coach at SJU and Georgetown before this Jay Wright thing. And you are going to turn that down?

Go ahead Van, get your training in and then come back when CMA calls it quits.
To be fair I am not saying either will be offered just what I heard from someone I respect.

But my larger point is do people seriously think they would turn down the Fordham job? Shaheen Holloway took a MAAC job, arguably the WORST MAAC job which is a low level conference to begin with even with the BEST jobs in that conference.

Of course not

No I think you’re right. But I guess it would depend on the coach and they know how much interest they get. There has to be some threshold no? Some jobs can’t be worth it. But I agree Fordham would be able to land a St. John’s assistant.

Btw two of Kyle's assistants at Fordham were Ronald Ramon and Tray Woodall both former NYC high school stars who went to Pitt in that NY pipeline.

If they don't stay at Fordham would love for SJU to find room on the staff for one of them.

Fordham makes sense for both guys because if you flame out, you are still getting a serious call for the first open Northeast high major assistant job. But hopefully it's Kimani.

Was Fred Quartlebaum ever considered during previous openings they had there as he did play there and was considered a pretty good assistant at one time (not saying he would be under consideration now as he has not been an official assistant coach in about 10 years having a different total before becoming Kansas' DBO in the last year or two)?

Nowhere to go but up at Fordham.
But it's been a coaching graveyard and absolute bottom feeder since the move to the A10. It's a maac level program competing at a level it can't compete at.
Great school. Great campus. Great location. But it needs a miracle worker.

Fordham has been irrelevant since leaving the MAAC. They should come back.

Not as far as the last few coaching searches.

Horrible mistake when they left. Tried to make up for it by over reaching for the A10 (at least in basketball). If they stayed in the MAAC and had good success, then a move to the A10 was a natural progression.

When Fordham transitioned from the Maac to the Patriot League during the Fred Herzog(88-92) it was a fun time a couple of NIT bids and of course the 1992 NCAA appearance. But not much success since going to the A-10 a string of failed coaches(Bob Hill, Tom Pecora etc.) I wonder if Ed Kull with his Mike Repole connection goes big on a hire. Pitino to Fordham.
