Coaching Alternatives

Marillac, it's not the fans "getting in" shots on the coaching staff and program.
I’m officially switching camps on this. Let’s just try to handle it gracefully.
If change happens, not sure how gracefully it can be handled at the AD level, since there are undoubtedly people in high places who love Mullin the player and the man, if not the coach.

But on a fan board level, I'll thank him for his service, be sorry he couldn't get it done, hope new blood solves many of the lingering problems, and in the future not talk crap about the coaching of my favorite basketball player of all time and second favorite athlete of all time.

Maybe the donors went to Cragg first with the idea.
I’d be ‘totally’ stunned if both CM resigns AND we get Bobby Hurley.
IF true, it’d mean this Board would owe mega mea culpas to Tom Bradley who was widely hooted by many here.
Life happens.
Lol.

I think if mullin does quit, Hurley would be interested. Never saw Tempe as a fit for Hurley. All the way across the country. Here he’d be local again and coaching in the big east. The pac 12 got a nice run from Oregon this year but they are a bit of a mess right now with Arizona and UCLA. Big east is the better place to be I would think. I don’t really like Hurley but I think he has a better chance of having success here than probably any other candidate you could name. And please no one quote this and say “rick pitino”

Marillac, are you saying...?

Bobby Hurley to SJU will never happen. Too much money involved to get this to happen. Hurley is not worth the cost.

And once he is stateside give a few days for the voices of PR to come to his aid and defend him. so far you just have Dick Vitale but I am sure by Sunday you will have many calling for Pitino to have another chance at redemption...

Geesh, I went a couple of days without checking this board- what a difference that makes LOL. It seems to me that Mullin would be wise to go out on a relatively high note--especially considering what next year would almost certainly bring.

In the next coach, other than experience, I want someone with **passion**, energy, unstoppable work ethic. Both Mullin and Lavin fell short on those fronts to varying degrees.Hurley seems like a guy who would fit that bill, but no doubt there are others.

FYI---

Dick Vitale

I’ll say it again to those that disagree with me that @Rick_Pitino deserves a 2nd chance . He’s been denied for 2 yrs to coach in college .Bruce Pearl & Kelvin Sampson took adv .of the 2nd chance . Y shouldn’t Rick be given a 2nd shot ? I’m happy for those that bounce back.

We'll do our best on that front, but at the very least Fordham96 has a return of serve coming your way... ;)

Being able to successfully recruit Jersey is a big key for this program to be where we'd all like it to be. I assume Hurley would be able to do so.
What we really need to do is get past the notion that we MUST recruit locally and be successful at it. We need to get the best players possible, regardless of where they are from. It's nice to recruit local kids because they are in our back yard, but it's not a necessity. The same thing goes for our next AC. We don't need an assistant with local ties. We need an assistant that is willing to do the work to get players from anywhere.
Why would I want to get past the notion of recruiting a state flush with talent that is easy to travel to?
I'm all for recruiting nationally, but it's frustrating to see us lose out almost completely in recruiting wars for local talent. Aside from Ponds, our team had zero players from the tri-state area, and that's pathetic (and embarrassing, to boot). And as LJSA points out, New Jersey is rich in talent, and having someone with deep roots there (as well as a highly respected pedigree) would be an enormous plus to the program.

Thanks, but no thanks.

He's 66, so he's not a long term solution. He's had more scandals on his watch than he has wins. Oh, and I believe that he has passed on this job before (more than once).
There's been enough chatter on Hurley for a while now and from enough different people that I can't understand how some people refused to believe it had legs. It seems far more likely that something is going on than it it for all these people to be lying, trying to stir up crap, etc.
I think Bobby Hurley as almost as good as it gets for SJ. We are not getting the Calipari's or Roy Williams. BH is a proven winner. He is from a basketball family with a coaching pedigree. He is not 26 and he is not 75. He is in the prime of his coaching career and I think after 2 recent gigs he would be looking to settle down for a few years. Also, he hates losing more than he likes winning. That is a quality that I would love to see in our next head coach. He has ties to NJ and NY areas and has name recognition for kids. Sign me up....

It keeps on keeping on though, doesn't it?
Dunno about Bobby Hurley or the even crazier notion of Pitino, but 'something' 'may be' up. with Chris.
As others have said, it'd explain 'no movement' on the AC issues.
And I agree with LJSA, IF true and Chris steps down, 'no bad mouthing' the man's coaching career and I will always revere Chris's incredible and inspiring St. John's and NBA HOF career!

Don't remember when he was actually offered the job, but I do remember hearing him, on radio, saying SJU would be crazy not to hire Bobby Gonzalez. The operative word here being "crazy."
