Coaching Alternatives

Equally important....is Hurley there?

The Final 4 is in Minny and almost every coaching staff goes and mingles with other coaches and whatnot. I don't know if anyone from SJU is even attending. I know Matt would go every year.
Greg & Cragg apparently
"Well, which one is it Greg or Cragg?"
Me either, but I know for a fact he can recruit, and build a program up, like he did at Buffalo and ASU. That alone is better than anything Mullin can do. And I know it's asking for a lot, but he actually looks like he at least cares when he's coaching during the games.
Not to send the board into a frenzy, but someone I trust who has connections told me he's heard from a couple different sources there's chatter about Mullin possibly stepping aside and that would clear the path for Bobby Hurley.

Not an April Fools. I'm not someone here who has sources, but I trust the person who told me this and I know he has connections. I'm just the messenger on this. Could be hogwash and might not come close to happening, but figured I would share. If it ends up being complete BS the mods can delete.
Bump lol

Can't be totally sold on anyone until they produce, but I think he's the quickest route to regaining credibility locally, getting HS 4 star kids again, having real X's and O's, real development, and tireless work ethic. At least we would know if he is not successful it would not be as a result of silly staff construction, no experience, and lack of effort. He may not make us a Final Four contender, but he may very well be able to get us to where PC and SHU are IMO. Dominated with Buffalo and got ASU a terrible major program to top 3 one year and top 17 another year. He's a good coach. His latest team did well in conference and won a tourney game (2nd straight tourney) which is more than any coach has done here in 20 yrs. He did this with several key freshmen and sophs. Maybe the days of "youngest team in America" excuses will end if he comes here. I'll bet on him vs. anyone else at this point that's attainable.

Hurley just during the past month has won an NCAAT game. He's also brought his team to two straight NCAAT. That is more than we've done in 2 decades. I'd be thrilled if we're able to get him.

Being able to successfully recruit Jersey is a big key for this program to be where we'd all like it to be. I assume Hurley would be able to do so.

ASU boards worried and UConn fans are worried they will have more competition with another Hurley recruiting locally. That doesn't happen with a bad coach. One UConn fan compared Mullin to Ollie without a ring and brought up how talented we were but also how awful we performed. I also think the timing without hiring an AC yet coupled with the rumors make them more potentially true.

Regarding recruiting, Hurley has a top 30 incoming class next year. He is entering his fifth year at ASU. When was the last time a St. John's coach was still recruiting that well 3+ years into his tenure?

There's been enough chatter on Hurley for a while now and from enough different people that I can't understand how some people refused to believe it had legs. It seems far more likely that something is going on than it it for all these people to be lying, trying to stir up crap, etc.

Who would you be "totally" sold on?

I sure hope the resignation rumors are true as well as the possibility of a Hurley hire. It is about time this program got some good news. I understand there are reservations about Hurley, but he can't be any worse than what we have now. He seems to be a passionate tireless worker and those attributes certainly are lacking in our current staff.

Probably Bob Hurley.

What we really need to do is get past the notion that we MUST recruit locally and be successful at it. We need to get the best players possible, regardless of where they are from. It's nice to recruit local kids because they are in our back yard, but it's not a necessity. The same thing goes for our next AC. We don't need an assistant with local ties. We need an assistant that is willing to do the work to get players from anywhere.

I don’t see Hurley happening right now. Unless Cragg has convinced a wealthy donor or two to pony up the financial implications seem to erroneous to me.
Marillac, it's not the fans "getting in" shots on the coaching staff and program.
I’m officially switching camps on this. Let’s just try to handle it gracefully.

Why would I want to get past the notion of recruiting a state flush with talent that is easy to travel to?

Maybe the donors went to Cragg first with the idea.

Does Bobby still play with the ponies?
